He was an amazing, unique singer and a real showman. Late 50s and early 60s television audiences were not ready for his earth shattering voice and demented witch doctor act and they got genuinely scared. In the recorded version a lot of the vocal noises were cut by the label , but it’s still fantastic. I just love him so much!

It’s worth a look on Wikipedia. Hawkins was a brilliant artist with a very interesting life. This was the best reaction to his music I’ve ever seen thus far. I even got the chills. To think AJ could, at nine, more than do credit to SJH and make a masterpiece shows me how truly great she is and will become. Thanks for the blast from the past today!😊

Angelina introduced me to Screamin Jay... I somehow missed him back in the '60s. It took a 9 year old Norwegian girl to reintroduce him to the world. This performance was simply incredible. It really made his career. Angelina's arrangement and cover is simply unbelievable... Thanks for reacting to Scremin Jay. He's an artist who needs to be remembered.

Philip, my respect for you grows by the minute. Just AWESOME that you took the time to react to this original by Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Like another in the comments says, Jay was a very interesting artist, and one that somehow didn't get the recognition he deserved. Maybe not too strange, as his style of performing was completely new for the time, in more or less the infancy of television. Now consider the fact that Angelina did HER OWN arrangement of this performance at age 9 years 2 months. That is totally unheard of, right ??? Much love from Norway ♥♥♥

Fun fact: Originally, this was almost a love song. The day they were recording, Jay showed up drunk and the take they did was so compelling they kept it.

He was kind of a novelty Blues act and he mixed comedy with that old-school Shout Blues style. He was really good at it and he's a very funny individual. He is totally portraying a voodoo shaman guy who is putting a spell on someone. He's got a really funny one called Constipation Blues; it's wild. He has a small but a really fun role in a fantastic late 80s or early 90's movie called Mystery Train that also has Joe Strummer from The Clash and others. The Creedence Clearwater Revival version is by far the most well-known and it's fantastic. It's on their very first album. Strongly urge you to listen to it. John Fogerty has a pretty good growl to his voice.

AJ did SJHawkins total justice like NO other!.- At 9yrs old no less!.-the bomb!. I am here for AJ........,simple. To know the original versions of Angelina's covers goes a very long way to fully appreciate how uniquely focussed and gifted she is. She is a living unicorn patiently,organically revealing the beauty of what it looks like to be a passionate human who backs their potential with hard work and kindness!. Screamin Jay Hawkins The Original Often Imitated Never Duplicated! Screaming Lord Sutch, Arthur Brown, Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, KISS, Michael Jackson, Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie all have this man's composition and performance of this song in 1956 to thank for their Thriller stage look and act. This man was shocking people back in the 1950's many years before anyone knew WTF Screaming Lord Sutch, Arthur Brown, Black Sabbath, and Alice Cooper were.

For me Screamin Jay's is still the best version because the beat is haunting, his voice is so unique & he gives the song a real voodoo-esque spell vibe which is for me still ahead of it's time. I can see that some people prefer CCRs, but the hype of Angelina Jordan's for me is biased because she is just 9, which is awesome but in the end it's just a song & I don't care that much about age... I honestly think there wouldn't be so much fuzz about her cover if she were 17.

The original Shock Jock. Now you know where Angelina got her inspiration from. I prefer AJ's version better. His picture is on the Candle at the beginning. She also did a second song by Screamin Jay called 'Portrait of a Man' Which she changed to 'Portrait of a Child' in rehearsal though I have not seen where she performed it live.
