I love that you are rolling way back for these original voices. Screaming Jay Hawkins was incredible! Madness! Absolute madness!

A few things about him I heard: In London he fired blanks from a shotgun from his hotel balcony at a wedding party across the street. A would be producer caught up with him in Hawaii discovering that he was just out of the hospital after his girlfriend had shot him in the stomach. There’s tons more, but I was surprised just seeing this from you. You’d love his insane bio.

Screamin Jay was a classically trained opera baritone who decided to call it quits to sing blues and soul.

Did you notice the skull on the top of his cane was smoking a cigarette? Ha!Ha!Ha! Too funny! I guess that's why they called him Sceamin' Jay Hawkins! I loved watching your face during this performance it was a roadmap of questions! Much love from Michigan!

I first heard this song about 40 years ago featured in a movie called "Stranger than Paradise," and even without the visuals, it knocked me for a loop. I'd never heard a song as strange as this one. Who would ever set a blues song to a waltz tempo? Seeing the performance is priceless. (Did you note that the skull was smoking a cigarette?)

He’s a genius and thank you for sharing this. If you want to hear something incredible but serious from him check out “portrait of a man “. If you’re seeking more of this creepy vibe (so good) check out “alligator wine” and “feast of the mau maus”. Also check out “I’m lonely”. “You put a spell on me”, “the eighth day”. He’s so good.

I was Screamin' Jay Hawkins guitarist back in the 1970's. I toured with Jay back than. My years of playing with Screamin' Jay Hawkins are in the book written by author Steve Bergsman I Put A Spell On You" The Bizarre Life of Screamin' Jay Hawkins. I also resurrected the band again. Resurrection of Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Look us up. We bring this music and those crazy days back on stage. Resurrection of Screamin' Jay Hawkins Band. Thanks for posting this video. If you look up our website and also the you tube video Resurrection of Screamin' Jay Hawkins Alligator Wine performing Hawkins song you will see what I mean. Thanks

He was adopted by Blackfoot tribe indigenous people, was a piano savant as young as 8. He was a successful boxer then he went to war. Cam3 back boxed for some time but came back to music. It’s also said he’s fathered as much as 75 children but that’s for you to judge.

It would be easy to get distracted by his act, but he has a big voice, and he's in full control of it.

The story I heard is he was a classically trained opera singer, and this song was intended as a straight-ahead blues ballad. When they got to the recording studio they were all wasted and recorded a totally demented performance. When they sobered up and listened back, they decided it was a much more enjoyable take on the song and rearranged it to match. And that's how Jay Hawkins became Screamin Jay Hawkins. And then came the funky stage props So the story goes, anyway.

He was a classically trained singer, actually. His version of 'I Shot The Sheriff' is worth a listen. And he covers some Tom Waits tunes pretty damn well also

Great reaction The first release was in 1956 and it is said the whole band was drunk and did the video anyway, really untamed kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZyqgZumq9anhcU He studied opera in his younger years and was a great influence for rock, jazz and blues. He was also an actor A year ago you reacted to Angelina Jordan singing this song at the age of 9, go back and review it again, and you have to ask how does a 9 year old from Norway know about Screamn' Jay Hawkins and perform the song channeling Screamn' Jay with the same passion, she also did a song of his jamming called Portrait of a Child cover of Portrait of a Man You can read all about his great life on Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screamin%27_Jay_Hawkins

kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYjbdXqHopebgc0 The link above is CCR doing the song. They did it more straight than Jay. So it didn't have Jay's theatrics. I don't know if you can compare the two. But you still might like to see someone else do a take on this song. And lastly, the Disney movie "Hocus Pocus" had a show tune style of this song as well.

A little 9 year old girl was so impressed by this performance, she did it and arranged it herself. Angelina Jordan from Norway. She's incredible and she does Jay's version.
