I watched a handful of random episodes, including the final episode. So I thought they would pick off after those events which… it did so I kinda had context on a lot of things and knew the references. I absolutely loved Fionna and Cake. But ima start watching adventure time… while I wait for a F&C season 2😂which I highly doubt will happen but it needs to happen.

It's perfect for newcomers, as it explains everything in detail for newcomers and gives context. Although I had more knowledge than our man here, I still didn't watch more than random handful of episodes and some lore clips. I'm sure more seasons will come, if not more specials.

Something about the Simon and Betty confrontation that felt a bit lackluster to me is that it focused a bit more on what Simon did wrong vs Betty, when I feel it was pretty even between the two, like she is overly obsessive and doesn't communicate, whereas he is an unassuming enabler of that behavior, oblivious to his capacity to hurt in this way - but it doesn't go completely unaknowledged, so it's not too bad. Plus it's prolly more what Simon needed to hear that the moment.

ig I interpreted it differently. All the flashbacks show Simon and Betty had more of a mentor-mentee relationship to begin with which definitely impacted their relationship dynamic. It’s not just that he enabled her, he let her make sacrifices that he didn’t even consider making for her. With all that in mind, I think the writers were appropriately critical of Simon’s actions. Even then, Betty made her own choices and this doesn’t go unacknowledged: “We made our choices. We could’ve made better ones but I don’t have any regrets.” Affirming at the end of the day, they were both responsible for the trajectory of their relationship. I like that they challenged their fabled love story and I like that this conversation gave Simon just enough closure to keep going.

@@bydstc1904 I mean idk to me it feels like you mostly said what I wrote - I think a key factor is that Simon never really asks her to sacrifice much for him, she just mostly does it almost unprompted, and he failed to see that aspect. I don't wanna go into spoilers too much but I felt in AT proper we get to see some of Betty's more destructive attitude and all - I feel like she has this idealized version of Simon in her head, and always tended to push him away when his behavior wasn't overlapping with that.

@@kaialone I think where I disagree is I don’t think it was split evenly. I think in some ways it was more Simon’s fault. Due to the mentor-mentee power imbalance, it fell on him to be more mindful of the lengths his admirer turned girlfriend would go for him and he wasn’t. I don’t think she was frustrated she wasn’t seeing her idealized version of Simon. I think she was frustrated Ice King wasn’t Simon.

@@bydstc1904 It's alright to disagree - I'm also not talking only about IK specifically -Like, she leaves when he doesn't return her affections in the way she wished he would, only leaving a note in a book about it (some Adventure Time spoilers) - She immediately leaves crazed Simon behind to join the seemingly healed Simon in the future, not considering the greater implications of that, and even verbally stating she's leaving Simon for Simon -Does not go along with his desire to pass away peacefully either, which is like, it's a complicated issue for sure, but notable -And then of course, the overall poor way she handles IK, even before she loses her mind, too And obviously I know this is all hard for her, I'm not saying it was malice, but it still wasn't right As an aside, this is a minor thing but there's also stuff like her putting him in the hospital by tossing a jar at him casually while he wasn't paying full attention - it was a small cutaway gag, but I still felt it was supposed to be representative of a certain dynamic of theirs I also find it interesting that their ultimate goodbye in F&C mirrors the way their relationship started and all - he tells her something that upsets her, but she doesn't express it directly, she rejects him and leaves a clue in a book about it instead (this was a bit all over the place, sorry)

To add more context to the world in episode 8, that world is a wish reality created by the Lich after he tricked Finn into opening a portal into Prismo's time room (This is where they all first meet Prismo). The lich wishes for all life to be extinct, which sends him to this reality. Finn and Jake survive being in the time room and Jake wishes to undo the Lich's wish. ...but that wish still technically happened so it exists in its own reality.

This was a great video and pretty much my experience with Fionna and Cake as well. I'm starting a watchthrough of Adventure Time now but I only really knew the bare bones of the show's plot and characters going into Fionna and Cake. Despite that, I still followed along well. I think its a mark of good writing that someone with pretty much zero AT experience can still watch, understand, and enjoy F&C and I appreciate that about it.

it's so rare and wonderful that a cartoon gets to truly grow up with the people who watch it and continue delivering profound messages to the same audience it has been ten years prior. given the postapoc lore of at, the inspiration of the deep and complex lore being drawn from gnosticism etc, moving on to an adult audience only expands the sorts of topics at can touch on. tbfh if you watch the show proper, by season 3 you can hear it practically screaming and begging to be that before it ended and was given to adult swim.

This mini-series was great and it's just amazing how adventure time can keep rising above all my expectations! Here's hoping we get a Shermy and Beth series with multiple seasons. I think you should have also shown that it wasn't just Simon's flaws, but also Betty's. Simon loves Betty a lot, and if, at any point in time, she wanted to do something else like focus on her career or other things, Simon definitely would have done the same things she did for him, but it's also Simon's fault that he never really realized just how much Betty gave up for him. Simon wasn't coercing or imposing on Betty to do anything, most times she's the one proactively giving things up for Simon. I don't think it's a toxic relationship, it was a flawed one, but there's no doubt that their love for each other is true. In the original show, Betty goes damn well and beyond trying to save Simon, it was her love for Simon that lead her to becoming a God, saving Simon but being separated forever.

Exactly, Vamp world showed us a world without Simon and Winter King shows us a world where Simons just lets everything go and how he somehow lost his Marcy, these two worlds were to show Simon has a purpose. The AT world, their relationship was important for the safety of their world. I really didn’t watch AT, (was in my 20s and even though I love animation, the humor nor the story telling was my cup of tea) I did see what I call the important episode, “jolly holiday” “remember me” and “Marcy and Simon” some others . The Ice King story was the only storyline I like. So when a it popped up I watched.

Context and refrences to Adventure Time viewers should know before watching Fionna & Cake: ▪︎Finn's father, Martin Mertens, abandoned Finn when he was a baby and became an inter-galactic criminal. He was such a bad criminal that he was imprisoned in The Citadel, a cosmic prison for people who commit horrible crimes crimes like murdering a cosmic being or committing mass genocide. Martin did not care about Finn and kept running away from him, and in the process of Finn trying to reconcile with his father, Martin ripped off Finn's arm. When Finn was a baby, he was adopted by 2 talking dogs, Joshua and Margaret, who already had 2 dog sons, Jake and Jermaine. Jake is a magical dog because Joshua was infected by an alien parasite known as Warren Ampersand. Finn's human mom, Minerva, is a doctor/therapist and lives on an island full of humans, revealing that Finn wasn't the last human on Earth. She made multiple robot versions of herself. ▪︎Adult Finn is coping with the loss of his brother/best friend, Jake, by distracting himself with adventures and drags Simon along (Recurring behavior from Season 5 Episode 12: "Vault of Bones", when Finn took Flame Princess adventuring to distract herself from her dad). Finn blindfolds himself as a trauma response because he was trapped in the Hall of Egress for 7 years, which reset his location every time he opened his eyes (Refrence to Season 7 Episode 24: "Hall of Egress"). ▪︎ Simon went insane and demented from the crown and turned into the Ice King (Revealed in Season 3 Episode 20: "Holly Jolly Secrets Part 2") ▪︎ Simon raised Marceline around 1000 years ago during the apocalypse (right after The Great Mushroom War), but of course, he doesn't remember that because the crown gives him dementia (Revealed in episodes Season 4 Episode 25: "I Remember You", Season 5 Episode 14: "Simon & Marcy") ▪︎In late Season 5 and early Season 6, multiple alternative universes are created by Prismo. Farmworld Finn cannot control the crown's power and freezes everyone, The Lich wishes for a universe where all life is extinct, and other messed up universes. The crown is very important in every universe. Simon made a difference. ▪︎Marceline is a half-demon-half-human vampire and grew up to be a vampire hunter (Explained in the Season 7 "Stakes" mini-series) ▪︎The jewels and the crown were actually created by an Ice Elemental known as Evergreen. A little green dinosaur named Gunther wished to be just like his Master Evergreen, so when he wore the crown, he turned into him. Similarly, when Gunther the penguin put on Ice King's crown, he wished to be just like Ice King, and turned into "The Ice Thing" with jewels for eyes. 1000 years in the future, Jake's great great great grandson, Gibbon, stole one of the jewels and became evil, trying to take everyone's magic away. This is where Shermy and Beth (reincarnations of Finn and Jake) come in. ▪︎Betty was Simon's fiancee and left Simon when he went insane from the crown, revealing why Ice King kidnaps princesses. Betty travelled to the future to bring Simon back to normal, tried to reprogram his crown, accidentally absorbed Magic Man's powers in a failed experiment, slowly went insane, and reset the crown for her final wish: to keep Simon safe. She then got absorbed into Golb, the entity of chaos. ngl it kinda bothers me that ppl who didnt watch AT think that what happened with Simon and Betty was mostly Simon's fault, when in AT it was stated how Betty was pretty obsessed over Simon and she was the one imposing her wishes over him (when Simon basically wanted to get euthanasia and she didn't respect that or the fact that she left the past Simon for the future Simon). Here in Fionna and Cake we see the Simon's mistakes, but in AT we saw Betty's mistakes, so then when we finally see both sides of the coin, we understand (those who watched AT) that both contributed to their current situation.

Imma be real, Mark was in the wrong that situation. If Mark wasn’t willing to tell her about his life, especially something THAT important, that actively effects HER feelings and life as well, then he shouldn’t have dated her. The issue is a lack of honesty. There’s no “I’ll be honest after a few years”, because that makes you a bad partner. That was the point of that relationship, that Mark had to learn that he needs to make sacrifices in his love life, that either 1. He can’t date non superpowered people or 2. He can’t keep his identity from his romantic partners

And not when he was nearly killed by battle beast, only when it was his father, and she only cared then even though before that, knowing he was invincible, still projected hate towards him knowing full and well that he saved her on that college campus. Like sure, i get being upset that he won't tell the truth would lead to some distance (as if there's enough already with him being a hero and all that) but the fact that she just couldn't at least be appreciative that he's looking out for her and thinks about her despite his heavy duty job forcing him to forget about his life for such traumatic experiences is insane to me. I agree whoever is mad about her being race swapped is racist, like it's whatever who cares. But the actual character herself is actually bad and deserves to be criticized.

I’m going to be honest, this is a complete misrepresentation of who Amber is, I’m gonna be nice and assume you haven’t seen Invincible in a while because saying “she never cared” is so not true. Even most people who hate Amber, admit that she was fine until she called him out on lying. And I said it’s racism, (and if what I said was more than 7 lines, I’d say Misogynoir) because people drag her for something, that they would never do for a white man, a white woman, or even a black man. @@Chillixion i will admit i didn't realize i typed a whole ass paragraph but the thing is like i said i liked her in the beginning but she progressively just got worse and worse. Looking back yeah i can see that maybe in a few moments of her being angry at mark she didn't know and was valid for being angry, but even then later on she held all of that against him saying it's on him for ruining the relationship. Also although i see why me typing a paragraph over a 5 second joke could be seen as me angry asf, i am upset but in reality i just like criticizing characters. Title alone I can relate, I learned most of the lore through timeline videos and analysis videos 🤓 however seeing Fiona and Cake made me want to really revist the series and finally finish it!
