In case You still want to know how this movie got the hype it did. Essentially, this movie is a love letter to the campy slasher flicks of the 80s like, for example, Friday the 13th franchise. Most of those movies had barely any plot, were filled with gratuitous gore and nudity, and they tended to have strange, goofy characters which, coupled with the visual style, gave the films a heightened sense of reality that made them both surreal and ridiculous, but fun - hence they developed a huge fan base.

and like many of those classics its kind of trying to pay homage to (which I think if fails at), Terrifier 1 is bad, really bad. Its boring. The VHS short was better, and Terrifier 2, while better, is still missing a lot. More than anything, I think its popularity was based on edgy gorefest, which I feel is weak. It doesn't do enough to sell the effects. And Art, as presented thus far, is not interesting enough to carry the series. He leaves a lot to be desired. edit - a decent chunk of the Friday the 13th series had plots, and the Nightmare on Elm street series also had plots.

The thing is, the Terrifier movies are so ridiculous and over-the-top that the comical elements stand out and the gory parts are just as funny, in a sickly twisted demented way. I would highly recommend the sequel. Not only is there an actual story, but a main character you like, the budget was increased so the effects are much better, and it’s definitely a sequel that adds more depth to what was a rather simplistic first movie.

This. Gore in horror movies hits a very hairstrand-thin line between enough to traumatize or so ridiculous it's campy - Terrifier was more on the latter, and not only did the movies come off as a homage to slasher films, its campiness was a homage to B-list horror movies with the over the top-ness.

As someone who does love this film, you kind of nailed part of it when you said how it's just so out there that you started laughing. Chopping someone in half with a hacksaw is clearly an over-the-top spectacle. Conversely I have a much harder time watching things like crime dramas or home invasion horror films, where the awful things that happen are way closer to reality. It's like the attraction of rollercoasters. You're just watching the silly over the top 'clearly not real-ness' of Art the clown messing around. You enjoy being faux-scared, and then you just carry on with your day. Terrifier is not a 'scary' movie, in my opinion. It's silly and fun and gory. Conversely, something like The Orphanage (Il Orfanado) is not gory, but is sincerely scary.
@cainyourkids7 ай бұрын
Yes with the home invasion movies. Most often they're the movies with almost minimal gore - hell, When A Stranger Calls had 0 blood in it, but they're the ones that fuck you up most because of how real it is. Art the Clown and Terrifier is the kind of horror movie you watch with friends laugh while throwing popcorn at each other during 6th grade Friday nights, it's campy, ridiculous, bloody and just on the right side of demented.

I love the Terrifier franchise. I think extreme gore can be really entertaining because even if the plot is all over the place, or it's so over the top that it "isn't scary", it allows directors to get extremely creative; and I think creativity is something we can all give Damien Leone credit for. I also think Art the Clown is unironically a really scary villain. I was never scared of clowns, and I never really even found Pennywise to be very scary, but I think Art the Clown is so unique because the fear he brings out of people comes from his facial expressions and mannerisms. David Howard Thornton is so good as Art the Clown and his expressive acting makes the character even weirder and creepier. The second film is a lot better and has a much better plot. Many people really prefer the sequel and I would suggest you check it out. The only problem with the sequel is that it's quite long (just over 2 hours) and it kind of drags out, even for my taste. Damien Leone also works with actors and actresses who aren't very well known so the acting isn't going to be like Scream or Saw. Terrifier 2 is still a small budget film, but it's very well made for the resources they had available. The film also made 15 million dollars in the box office which is much more than the original Terrifier made. Terrifier 3 is said to release at the end of 2024 and the budget is a couple million, so hopefully they can make something better than the first two films with that. At the end of the day, these are low budget extreme gore films, so obviously they're not going to be award winning films, but I trust Damien Leone to close out this trilogy in an amazing way.

The reason the movie is praised is because it created a new horror icon that the genre desperately needed. We relied too much on the 70s-80s icons. And the closest we have had to a modern original icon is John Kramer/Jigsaw. And Art with his silliness and cruelty, definitely fills the void of a charismatic and intimidating villain. David Thornton really carried the movie. Had there been another plain character or even another actor, the movie would’ve just sucked completely.

This is one sick movie, 30 yrs ago something like this would've never even been allowed to be shown. Yet, in today's time people love it, go figure. Part 2 is even more crazy and ridiculous, would love to see what you think of that one.

**gets notified of a new upload & sees this title knowing this film fascinates me solely because it is not my cup of tea but I like how it is for a very specific audience and I am glad they can love it for what it is** me: oh no, thanks **realizes who uploaded this reaction and reconsiders the title and remembers the type of audience it is for** me: OH YES LMAO

I have two movie recommendations for you: 1. Chernobyl Diaries and 2. Grave Encounters, they‘re both found footage and I think you would love them

The bedroom scene from the second one was totally the most traumatising thing I have ever watched ngl

Editing comment: You should watch Terrifier 2. The violence and gore is even more brutal but the movie is also SO MUCH BETTER than the first. Sienna Shaw is one of my new favourite final girls EVER.

Question. I don’t know if you’ve answered before. I’m sorry if I missed it. But what do you use to edit your videos? Also, absolutely love every single one of your reaction videos! :)
