The best part about Mulan was that she didn’t want to be a warrior. She HAD to be. She didn’t start out good at fighting, but for her own sake and her family’s sake she literally HAD to learn. There’s development. There’s sacrifice. In the remake there’s basically no development and she doesn’t make any sacrifices because she’s not doing it completely to help her father, she’s also doing it just because she wants to. It’s such a difference and it’s what I think makes the original eons better than the remake.

I loved seeing Mulan be clumsy and not that athletically gifted in the animated version. I relate to that so much. The Make a Man Out of You montage of her struggling, nearly quitting, but working her butt off to get to the top of the pack inspires me even now. I can't hear "Let's get down to business, to defeat...the huns. Did they send me daughters when I asked for sons?" without getting pumped up. But the live action is just...she's 5 years old and doing insane roof parkour acrobats around the village. Not like she worked her butt off training to do that like any real world gymnast, but she's got like mystical dragon powers or whatever? This movie in general is giving me big "The Last Airbender (dir. M. Night Shyamalan)" energy. It's recreating a beloved piece of media, changing too much that didn't need to be changed, adding in too much of their own ideas no one asked for, and utterly ruining their own project. So much of it was changed and contradicts the source material, they would've been better off just changing the names and turning it into an original movie. Mulan isn't as bad as The Last Airbender, but it ain't great. I'm not in any kind of rush to watch it again (unless it comes with Trin commentary). If I paid a Disney+ subscription fee AND an extra $20 to watch it as soon as it came out, I'd be livid.

When you make a female character only gain her strength through chi, your basically saying that unless girls have magic abilities they aren’t strong. And I know that’s not what the film makers probably intended, but it really just feels like it to me. In the original, Mulan gains her strength and power through hard work and love for her father, not some weird magic ability from birth that doesn’t exist irl. Edit: I didn’t mean Qi (I think I spelt it wrong before sorry) is magical or a super power and I honestly don’t know much about it, but the use of it in this live action does insinuate women need this Qi to be powerful and strong whereas the men are strong off their own accord

@itsbambi924 жыл бұрын
I felt the same way. What made the original so good was Mulan. She was a really flawed and real character! She would forget her chores, she was clumsy, she struggled to fit in, she loves her family, she had a voice and was often shut down because she’s a woman. She was never disrespectful but she followed her heart despite not knowing what she was getting herself into. Mulan is such a relatable character and this new version of Mulan is like another girl power Mary Sue. Just another female character that makes you feel you aren’t good enough to be strong or anything.
@fabiofuoco4 жыл бұрын
Adding to that, I think one of if not THE major strength of Mulan was not physical, but instead her natural problem solving ability! From feeding the chicken using the dog, to causing the avalanche instead of attacking physically the Huns, to climbing that pole by using the weights to her advantage! That was to me a huuuge part of her character, what made her unique and intelligent, and being perfectly balanced between her feminine and her masculine side!
@BabyGirlTiny4 жыл бұрын
I think that would be fine, if it was established that it wasn’t a gender based thing and instead everyone had chi but the important thing was how you use the chi that matters. This way you can keep that element, but also keep Mulans cleverness

In the original Mulan, she had to struggle to learn to be a warrior (along with all the other men, no one was born being good at their job regardless of gender). She had to face her own insecurities and overcome them, and she wasn't stronger than anyone else. She overcame challanges by persevering, and by using her wits. In this version she is essentially a devine being and was just as good at being a warrior when she was 8 as she was when she went to war as an adult. And she was physically stronger than everyone else, bar none. In the OG Mulan we were taught that anyone can achieve great things worthy of being honored for if they persevere and use their wits. In this movie we are taught that if you are a devine being you can break the societal norms and be rewarded, but if you are not, then you are shameful and should be punished.

Here’s my take: Mulan is the Captain Marvel of Disney live action movies. Disney wants so badly to be supportive of feminism, but in the process it makes it seem like only girls with special abilities can be with the boys. The original Mulan was intelligent, and powerful because she was smart. Adding Chi to her character made this movie less feminist than the original, making it seem like only girls born with abilities can be on equal ground as men. Disney really needs to stop

If anyone’s wondering, they changed the plot and removed Mushu and the songs because apparently they offended actual Chinese people living in China. They didn’t like how Mushu made a mockery of dragons, which are a very sacred creature in Chinese culture, and the only song that Chinese people liked was Reflection. And they got rid of Li Shang because apparently there were some so-called unacceptable power dynamics between him and Mulan, being that Shang was her general. While I can understand them removing Mushu and the songs to stay truer to the original Ballad of Mulan, I don’t undertsand why they would then go and add in a totally new witch and chi into the story? And not hire a single Asian person in a main behind the cameras role? There was one single person of colour in the main creative roles (director, screenwriters, editors etc) and it was a black man. And the removal Li Shang makes no sense. Belle’s love interest is LITERALLY her captor who IMPRISONED HER for months, surely that’s got to have some wacky power dynamics? On your point at the end about adding music taking away from the serious tone, the scene in the original movie where they're singing A Girl Worth Fighting For and it's interrupted suddenly by the war scene felt darker and more startling than all of this movie
@fabiofuoco4 жыл бұрын
I wanted to say the exact thing! It really serves that purpose of making the war seem like a “game” to them to actually being taken as a serious thing (in fact there are no songs from that moment on) and removing it takes away from the darkness they wanted to amplify.

When the red and gloom of the scene contrasted to the light white snow and happy tone it was a stark contrast of how this was no joking matter. Even the quick glance down at all the fallen soldiers when Shang receives his father's helmet from Chien Po.

My biggest turn off about the movie is how Mulan didn't need to get stronger. She's already strong, and the reason Mulan has always been my favorite disney princess is because it shows her growth and how you can do anything you put your mind to regardless who tells you otherwise. And the movie somehow failed to acknowledge the main point of the movie. They turned her into this superhuman person and you don't see growth in this movie at all.

I remember being so excited that one of my favorite Disney Princess movies was going to get a live action remake and then every single change they did was a punch to the face: no Li Shang, no songs, no Mushu, no cricket, no grandma, there’s a sister now, she has Chi and is not like other girls, there’s no Yao, no Ling, no Chien-Po, the general doesn’t even die and the whole point of Mulan that I really like is that perseverance and hard work is necessary in order to achieve what you want; also, yeah it’s PG, yeah it’s a musical but the thing that I love about that is that when the song A Girl Worth Fighting For comes on as they’re traveling to meet with the other regimen is so lighthearted and fun and it symbolizes how none of the soldiers have seen war, they just finished training and are going to meet up with the other regiment, BUT the song just cuts off abruptly when they arrive and see the regimen literally massacred and THAT is such a powerful moment in the movie that shows the horrors of war and after that moment there are no more songs in the movie and I love that symbolism and it’s a downright disgrace to name this movie Mulan when they basically spit on the original Honestly the ONLY reason I watched it was because the actress who voiced the original Mulan would introduce the new Mulan and I loved that symbolism of passing off the torch to the new generation but now I’m like, she should have kept the torch Ps: I have read that there IS a Chinese version of the Ballad of Mulan and it’s very well made, it actually tells the original story (in which I think that Mulan went to the army with the blessing of her father after proving that she could defeat him in battle and that’s pretty neat) I haven’t seen it but I have heard that it’s a well made film that stays true to the story so if anyone wants to check that out that’ll be cool too

Actually, since it was a live action, I not only expected, I *wanted* no cricket, no mushu, no singing, and a more historically accurate depiction of Mulan’s role in the war against the invaders. Those were the only necessary changes. Everything else Disney added was disgusting and shit.

In regards to the sister thing, in the original source material, the poem, and the animated movie, Mulan has a little brother, since he was underage, he couldn’t fight in the war, so that’s why her father took the job. In the poem his name is (I think) literally Brother, but I the animated movie he is a dog that is named Brother. That’s the one this that kind of pissed me off, the fact that they said it would be closer to the source material but didn’t even make the sister a brother. That’s just what I remember, I learned this years ago so I cant exactly remember how much is factual. :)

@@autumnpoe4612 ^^ It's called Hua Mulan and it's a bit more raw, more action, more drama, more love, more sacrifices... I won't say it's a masterpiece but it's wayyyy better than this one, from the production to the plot even to the acting. The cartoon one is a good family movie, but it doesn't stick totally to some things from the actual legend, specially the ending. This one does, definitely not child appropriate but funny enough is closer to the cartoon one than this with witches the chi and all that nonsense. I cried quite a bit when I saw it years ago.

It's funny, I was actually thinking the two movies are really alike while watching this one. Both are based on fun, Asian-inspired animated properties, both are overly serious and dull, both cut out all the characters' development, and both awkwardly introduce magic martial art powers without properly explaining them. I think Mulan was probably the better of the two, but both films are real duds.
