I had a first and second gen BRZ and I was pretty shocked at how much more comfortable the second gen was. Not even just the suspension, but the seats are wayyy better too. That being said though, I think the stock suspension is the perfect balance of sport and comfort. I now have a '22 Mazda 3 and I actually feel like the second BRZ soaked up bumps better. They really got the dampers figured out on that one.

I went back to stock struts from the Fortune Auto 510. I can not in my good conscious to recommend Fortune Auto. I have done a little research on the subject matters; Fortune Auto is basically BC coilovers with their fancy in house valving. Fortune auto imported all their components from taiwan (BC), and made their own valving on shore. Fortune Auto messes with the car's suspension travel, due to that I constantly bottomed out the struts on track. Their coilovers tends to be on the over damped side, so I got tire shock or suspension jacking down if I tuned the damping incorrectly via clicks. However, I do recommend RCE's stuff. Their coilovers are essentially revalved KWs, KW is known for making comfortable performance shocks. SS-1 is pretty good, SS-2 is an upgrade from SS-1 with more track capability (probably more aggressive valving on compression). Another reason to go with RCE is that they are pretty transparent about what they have learned, it tells me that they put R&D into their products.
@grembal.7 ай бұрын
Shock travel is affected if you lower the car traditionally (dropping it from threading the damper downwards). I have no doubt the FA510s have shorter travel compared to stock or other coilovers, but you may have been able to at least mitigate your bottoming out problem by properly setting bump travel, droop, etc. See Gears & Gasoline's video 'How to Properly Set Up Coilovers' as a starting point and do more research from there
@VinRZ7 ай бұрын
@mumyoryu I'm selling them. Funny enough, these fortune autos didn't come with any bumpstops. I figured they couldn't afford to run bumpstops to take more bump travel away. 🤷♂️ I got a set of RCE's SS-R with a stiffer spring rate at the rear. Man, let me tell you the night and day differently a set of good shocks will make.

@@VinRZ I feel that, I'd been using cheaper coilovers for a long time and last year got to drive a friend's miata with Xidas, it was a seriously noticeable difference on track between those and the MeisterRs I had on my car, although the Meisters are decently capable for a cheaper coilover. Im on stock suspension with my BRZ for now but plan on RCE or similar down the line

I know the ride is a bit stiffer but I can’t remember the difference now. I’m happy I didn’t go with a set that comes with higher spring rates than these. They’re my first experience with coilovers but so far there’s been zero negatives and no degradation of ride quality for daily commuting. Just my 2¢ FWIW

Hey Cam, those larger top bolts of where the knuckle bolts to the strut are actually cam bolts, they are cammed kind of like a camshaft on an engine to adjust your camber, you will definitely want an alignment after all is said and done. Good luck with the family and everything bro! ALSO! MAKE SURE you properly torque everything! Suspension parts are very high vibration and can definitely come lose and start to clunk and/or fail with little warning. Get your alignment guy to do it or do it yourself, and only tighten the bolts that go through bushings when the car is sitting on all 4 wheels. It is super important because the bushings will be tightened in their neutral position. If you tighten when the suspension is hanging and you let the car down the contact face between the collar of the bushing and the suspension arms will want to twist the bushing, causing serious premature wear on them.
@Camhill18210 ай бұрын
Good to know! Alignment first thing Monday morning
@amdstrollo307410 ай бұрын
I just edited the comment for the note about tightening everything with all 4 wheels on the ground, make sure to read that if you didn't. Another thing too right before getting your alignment, ensure you have a full tank of gas. I know your alignment guy won't mention this but it is mandatory from all Subaru and Toyota to have your gas tank full. The alignment changes ever so slightly with weight in the car and it's important you do that. Torque specs for the 3 bolts for your strut mount are about 20 ft/lb. Your front lower ones should be about 125 lb/ft. Your rear arms for all bolts should be about 60 lb/ft. Your sway bar links front and rear should be close to 40 lb/ft @@Camhill182

The top bolts on my 2022 BRZ were not cam bolts, and I'm sure that the same even holds for the GR86. From running in D Street class, I know that I can't put cam bolts in - because they're not stock. Now for some strange quirk of the rules, you can get an extra bottom bolt and put that in the top hole, slam the hub all the way in, and torque it down to get that little extra camber angle -- I know, and I've done it because everyone else in my club does that. A cam bolt would be a lot nicer because it would help hold the angle, but SCCA rules don't allow that on these cars.

@@Camhill182 I think people underestimate kids. My wife and I speak the way we speak regardless of the situation. We cuss, nothing super vulgar, but we have a fair amount of sentence seasoning. Out of our friends who have kids and other families I’ve observed, our kids seem to have the least issue with language. We let them know that these are words they can choose to use when they’re older, just like other things parents have to let their kids know aren’t appropriate until they’re older. The kids I’ve seen struggling with cursing or other behaviors are usually the ones who are shielded completely, or told it’s forbidden, evil, bad etc. I’ve watched your videos with my 8 year old son and he giggles at some of your curse words, the way he giggles at mine. The words are normalized, and by not placing at pressure or creating that mystery, he doesn’t have the urge to go and say those things. Our 16 year old daughter was the same way when she was younger, and just now we’re starting to ease up on language limitations. Your family, your decisions. I appreciate when people are real on their videos. I understand that you making the decision to “cleanup” isn’t necessarily fake.
