I'm so hyped to watch Jared play this one! I'm glad he's avoiding spoilers because I love getting to see his reactions as someone who genuinely loves the original. There's so much cool stuff in this remake, Hoverbat is awesome! On a side note, I also usually grab the hammer and downstab and all the little side things before bothering with the second temple lmao 😅

Doing Death mountain first nets you the Hammer, Magic Capacity upgrade, Downstab and Health Capacity upgrade... pretty worthwhile and makes the 2nd palace significantly easier.

Big credit to Hoverbat on his work. I've been enjoying it tons, playing along just a head of Jerd here. I actually thought you needed the fairy for walking in the shallows as I didn't discover it until I had gotten her.

One trick I learned about the downstab is that if you mash the down button, each one acts as a separate hit, meaning you can eviscerate enemies with it (this also works with the upstab, but gravity is against you)

The other thing to note is holding Jump lets you bounce higher, there's an NPC in the game that mentions this.

Followup on little known tricks; going back and forth while using a standard sword attack in air also counts as multiple attacks in the original, which is highly useful against Fire/Thunderbird in the original final palace (can't remember what his name is). Basically you jump into his face, normal stab, and mash back and forth on the d-pad for 2-3 hits. I can't actually think of anywhere else it is a viable strategy, but there, it really shines.

There's a trick in the nes game when you pick up a red magic refill if you use life before it fills your magic meter you will cast the spell and continue to recover magic it still works in this version as well

Yeah they refill a set amount of Magic Points and only stop until you either reach maximum capacity or they expend all of their capacity.

When Zelda 2 came out, I hadn't yet run into RPGs and with the rental lacking the manual (and me not yet knowing more than a couple words of english), I had no idea what was going on and what I was supposed to do. Only learned to appreciate the game way later.

I always go to death mountain early in this. Of course, I try to leave Parapa with 4/4/4 beforehand. BTW, those urchins can be killed without the downthrust. Just jump and crouch stab just as you land.

13:00 in that first room with the 5 pillars if you jump up on the first one on the left, and then jump to the other 4 pillars without touching the ground, you will reveal one of the 12 orange bots in the game. Kill all 12 orange bots and you'll open a doorway that warps you to a part of the world map where you can get an upgraded sword.

One thing I'd like to see with this remastering is that you STILL gain the experience even when an item drops. I HATE fighting a big monster who's worth a ton of experience only to get a dinky magic bottle out of it. I'd ALSO like to see them drop a life-restoring heart sometime! The first game had that and if we're bringing back elements of the first game...

I like fighting the Daira the most. They’re a test of spacing and mobility rather than a test of how long you’re willing to tink harmlessly off of armor. I prefer an enemy that I can knock back while it kicks my ass.

Little tips. Red potion fill 1.5x or 2x (forgot how much) of maximum magic bar (in og). It will fill as long as either the magic meter is full or reached the maximum value. This mean if you spam heal before it reach the end, it will continue to fill after. I Remeber spamming heal, jump, shield and fairy on one red potion.

If you keep playing these new versions of classic games, I'm going to end up playing them, too. I tried this one out after seeing the first couple of episodes here, and I had an absolute blast. This version is better than the original, I'd say. I'm kind of wishing we had more games like this. I know there's the whole Metroidvania genre, but those feel more like Metroid and Castlevania, which are nice but which focus on exploring a single location thoroughly. Zelda 2 lets us explore a HUGE world map with lots of different locations, and they don't all feel clumped together. I like the scope of it. The only bad thing I can say about this series is that it's distracting me from Yakuza.

I gotta agree that it's an improvement on the original. The original is probably my favorite Zelda, exploring its world blew my mind. I was actually really disappointed when LttP rebooted the story because I was really hoping they would have extrapolated more on AoL. I feel like this remake FINALLY gave me that. I've completed all the way through the second quest and it was all brilliant (minus the some of the kaizo-mario jumping sections...)

@@Retro_Rainer For palace 6 the path to the slime room is high above the ceiling in the room with the 3 pillars of falling blocks before the boss room. Climb the pillars of falling blocks and jump above the ceiling to the right with jump spell. On the dungeon map the slime is above the boss room.

Found island volcano south of death mountain (x) didn't find secret 17:09 Downward thrust ✅ Didn't start to explore hammer-related caves yet. 10 flowers for (fairy) spell required. Didn't enter 2nd temple yet. Death mountain not fully explored. Swamp not fully explored. Things to remember from 1st game: 1> if you have a (red) magic jar on screen and less than the needed magic (white) bar to cast a (life) spell, queue up the spell 1st, then stab the magic jar and cast the spell immediately to gain the benefits from BOTH at the same time! 9:44 (x) 12:17 (x) 13:16 (x) Jared has improved fighting in death mountain... jumping, groan.

I think the only thing I hate about this remake is that the Red Bottles of Magic no longer provide 128 Magic Points, they only fill your current max. On cart, you can Life twice for every bottle you find and still have magic left. Can't do that here.

The game is not unfair like other versions of Zelda 2 although it has really hard secrets to find awaiting veterans especially if they complete the New Game Plus Second Quest that has lots of changes and even more new content.

I don't think Heal was buffed in this (I think it recovers 3 or 4 pegs), Jared just doesn't have a lot of Heart Containers yet. If you mean in comparison to his previous attempt at Zelda II, that was a randomizer with settings that affected the amount it restored.

It is a more recent addition and the option to change it is in the options section that you can access by pressing the letter O while playing the game. I've read that the abillity to change tilesets is planned as well although I don't know how far away that is from being a reality. I'm a member of the Discord channel for the game so I should probably pay more attention to it lol.
