It's great and really catches people that know the game off guard. And it also eliminates the whole "I'll just fly over this whole room" exploit. And i guess it was neccessary with how much vertical platforming there is in this version.

But also still being able to fight and pick up items as a chicken is awesome. I even fought a couple of the bosses in chicken mode just for fun and one of them was actually WAY easier 😆

Personally, I'm not bothered by our lack of a Palace 2. This version of AoL us just full of fun, extra crap that we haven't seen, and I've seen Zelda 2 played through a lot, so seeing the new content is great! Also, as I do, thank you so much for doing another play through of a Zelda 2 game! I know plenty of people didn't like this game, don't like this game, or are so young they've never even played it; just accepting the words of others that it's bad, outdated, or unnecessary fir what Zelda is, today, but as someone with legitimately fond memories, from way back so long ago, I'm personally very much enjoying watching you trudge through it, using info you already have, and overcoming the new stuff that makes this different. My boulder circle gave me 2nd is South East. This means no one else can spoil the boulder circle solution for you, as its randomized per game.

I'm so happy you figured out the downstab bridge. It's so satisfying. Did you notice the fish respawn after a short time? just in case we whiffed the jump. I appreciate the respawning crumble blocks too, had really made the entire experience much better to not have to leave each room and try again

I only figured out the downstab bridge on the second version near the broken bridge to the temple where you get the boots. The first one I crossed with chicken and the jump spell. You can just barely make it while avoiding the enemies. The second one is too long for this to work. So after wasting a few minutes trying to figure out a way to make chicken work I finally figured out it wouldn't and needed something else. It felt pretty satisfying doing it for the first time.

Oh you know it’s a good retro game when half-way you turn into a chicken(I absolutely adore that change and the cute animations) The fish pogo stick execution was also awesome! On the Octorok room all I can think it’s a joke the slime switched places with it unless there is a secret in there activated later.

@@jacethomas5562 No, there's nothing special about these rooms. Death Mountain has several dead end rooms that just lead to 3 Octorok's. Just like several palaces have dead ends for no reason

He decided to write down clues to volcano Island (1st e, 2nd w, 3rd se, 4th didn't check swordsman (down thrust) yet in mido town) ✅

Game seems very good Jared. I'm enjoying watching you play through games like this and Final Fantasy in all new ways. I hope more developers do things like these moving forward, so we retro game fans can have more experiences like this. I'm definitely going to have to play through this myself at some point. The game design is such high quality. On the bridge toward fairy palace, there is a gap with a fish. The jump is deceivingly long, and the fish is positioned in just the right spot. Its easy to go left with a down stab, but going right is a pretty tough jump that seems to get everybody. This is all by design. It lets the player naturally figure out the fish puzzle going one way, and showcasing the fairy's use going the other.

The boulder circle is something you definitely want to explore as soon as possible. I had five clues and I just guessed the last three and managed to get it right on my first try. Definitely worth it. Chicken Link caught me off guard on my playthrough too. It's barely a replacement for Fairy unless you attach the jump spell to it, which is my only gripe about it. You should eventually head back to Death Mountain. That extra life you saw and thought you needed fairy to get is possible to get now with the right pathing. Finally, you can press "O" any time you're in side-scrolling mode to bring up an option menu. If you want to avoid square by square hunting for secrets one option will cause most hidden tiles to flash. You can also change the music, and there are some real banger versions of the Zelda 2 themes.

i played zelda 2 on the gamecube collectors edition first, and honestly this game is SO satisfying learning how to play, it's hard, and i'll never deny that, but it's honestly my second favorite game to play in the franchise

I was looking forward to Palace 2, but honestly all this exploration and newness is exciting and fun. I think this game would stand on its own, but as a childhood Zelda 2 stan, the constant happy brain tickles of "familiar, but NEW!" is just great. The "Fairy" spell is hilarious, and the way it was changed to not completely and almost immediately nullify 90% of the value of Jump is smart. Another ep should be dropping in a few hours, and I can't wait!

Honestly the change to the Fairy spell is probably for the better; there's a lot of spots in Zelda II you could just cheese with the original spell, which would be especially bad with the amount of platforming sections this remaster added, this still has some of the intended usage while also having a few traits of its own.

I'm just curious what they're going to do with the late game palaces. I know one of them had a high wall that required Fairy to climb, as well as spots over bottomless/lava pits you need fairy to cross, and some small alcoves you could only enter with the reduced height.

If you don't know any of the boulder sequence, there are about 40K possible combos. If you know just 4 boulders, there are 24 possible combos, so it's a lot easier to brute force.

For the chicken, just hold Jump. No need to re-press the button for hovering. The boulder solution changes per playthrough of the game, so you can't rely on watching other peoples playthroughs of the game to know the answer to your own playthrough!
