I really appreciate you posting this. I was just quoted 3500 to repair the clutch and actuator by the dealership . Of course the clutch warranty expired because Ford hates their customers. I can appreciate that you enjoy these cars inside and out. There's a lot to be said for being efficient with knowing and quickly resolving their issues. Still, these have a bad reputation. I have a 2013 Focus ST. I am glad I got the ST. So far, no issues and I am currently at 100K but I have noticed that the Focus cars are quickly leaving the roads. Not as many around.

Just bought a 2016 Ford Focus only put a 100 miles on it and needed a whole new power train covered by warranty so I wasn't stressed. So I put another 1500 miles on it and it's jerking until you hit 15 mph then it Drives smooth , but I found that very odd it would go out that fast and I look online and found out that the clutch has a recall on it. I was so devastated to find out that Ford never updated the issue so the Clutch will still go out no matter how many times you change it. And Ford says that the clutch isn't under warranty. I'm just going to fix the clutch and pay the car off and trade it in for a Toyota or Honda most likely.But I give you props for figuring out how to fix this because it amazes me that Ford engineers never found a solution knowing right away the transmission was crap and this went on for six years. I wish Ford could pay you a couple million Dollars for your secret on how to fix the clutch and transmission so other mechanic nationwide can fix these lemons and save people a good chunk of cash.

Thanks for a very information filled video. I have a 2012 Ford focus with about 200,000 miles on it. Most of its highway as I travel 6 1/2 hours round-trip total of 13 hours every weekend plus during the week I use it. I change the transmission oil once every year. I’ve cleaned the ground and keep an eye on the battery to make sure it’s changed every four years. But I will tell you I found one thing about this car I had a lot of issues with the jerking and of course as every manual transmission the shift change is an always perfect but it does run pretty good. If multiple people use the car it does have more issues than if a single person uses it. Cause the computer is taking consideration your drive habits and everybody drives differently and there was three of us driving this car and there’s a lot of jerk and issues I eventually disconnected the battery reset everything and only I drive the car now it drives considerably better. So basically I’m saying just one person should drive it so the computer knows exactly when to make the shifts.

For those having issues, I would check your sensor that tells it when to shift. My 2014 Ford Focus had an issue at around 50k-60k miles. I got in the car and it wouldn’t move into gears and the check engine light went on. The ford dealership looked into it and saw the sensor to tell it when to shift was bad. They replaced it and it was good again. I’m at 113k miles and still going. Hopefully nothing else happens but that’s where I’m starting at if this happens again to me.

First off, you are a badass for learning this stuff and then taking the time to share it with everyone! I also want to thank you for taking even more time and answering questions and in such a short time. I have shared your channel with 3 people already, subscribed and hit the bell. On to my questions, do you have to have the odb scanner that you use to be able to 'relearn' or 'program' the transmission? Is there another way to do that? Have you heard anything about the class action suit that ford settled on where they are buying the focus back if it had transmission problems?

You don’t have to do a relearn with a tool, if everything is working right, it will learn on its own after normal driving. There is a recall on these, but parts are on back order and people are waiting for years to get the recall done.

I have heard that when a dealer does a recall, they only perform the recall. No cleaning, replacing anything extra or the sort. Another reason to take it to your personal trusted mechanic or diy. Dealer only “requires” extra parts and work be done when we’re paying for it.

Basically, Ford dealers are crooks. Anytime someone brings in a powershift with problems they quote thousands. Quite often the problem can be fixed in a few minutes with zero parts! (Ground clean) Or a couple of hundred bucks (new actuators). They're crooks, and dumb crooks, because a LOT of people, having had these problems and the high price repairs will simply never buy a Ford again.

Correct on the driving methodology! Ergo if one doesn’t beat the car and let the car drive ( not punch it like a dragster) the trany works fine. I’ve randomly asked people (Focus owners) about their experience and most haven’t had any issues . I asked if they previously ever drove a Manuel transmission and those that did said ,sure they can feel the shift occur , don’t push it and let the car do its thing , those that never drove a Manuel (stick shift) where the ones ( for the most part) that experienced the jitter thing you mentioned. So sure there is a human learning curve as to how to drive the dual clutch . As a side note some BMW s with the dual clutch setup albeit a bit different experienced the same shutter deal only they paid a neck of a lot more for the car , is what it is I guess.

My 2012 lasted 25k miles and it all went south. Ford did about 4 clutch packs and then an entire transmission that arrived on a pallet. The car was never right after 25k. It was fine until that point. Ford engineering advised management not to sell these things, they knew it was a bad design but management overruled that advise and sold them anyway. To tell a person that you cannot put your foot to the floor with 160HP on tap, then the trans isn't ready for prime time. I traded the car back to them and lost my shirt on it

First and foremost I want to commend you on your channel. I really appreciate the time/effort you have dedicated to provide us with much needed content to help us laymen people who may not be mechanic savvy. At least not on this particular issue. That said, I'm afraid I dont share your opinion on these transmissions. I own a 2014 For Focus SE and it has failed me a few times. You state that you should only have to "clean/lube" but you shouldn't have to go through all of that effort, or cost. These problems have not been a few here and there. Ford was facing a class action lawsuit over this transmission due to the shear amount of people who were having transmission problems. For a trained mechanic its a no brainer. But for your typical driver it may as well be rocket science. Ford knew these transmission were poorly designed but was competing with other makers for a fuel economy vehicle and pushed it out anyway. Who has the money to have their transmission to be serviced like this? A good shop/mechanic charges over $100/hr for labor alone. Ford has done a great disservice to its customers. And continues to do so today with recalls on several of its new model vehicles. Not sure what they have been doing that the quality of their vehicles has gone down. But it needs to change before they end up losing people to other auto makers. People invest their hard earned money in Ford only to be pushed aside when their vehicle keeps breaking down. Dealerships and manufacturers need to get their act together and help these people when the time comes.

I don’t usually comment, but since I scrolled and couldn’t find any actual mechanics sharing information on this, I’ll give my 2 cent. First and foremost, do not try resetting the clutch and reusing it, Fords already proved that just causes reoccurring problems. We use the LUK kit in our transmission shop, it comes with everything you need to overhaul the clutch side of this transmission. Only thing we get from Ford is the actuators. They’re readily available at most dealers. Secondly, if you replaced everything, you need to do the Adaption process via a scan tool like a AUTEL. (Some say you don’t but you absolutely do or it will lead to premature failure of the clutch.) Third, if your codes come back after the install and the “relearn”, the TCM is bad. Any TCM will work with any year model of the Focus/Fiesta if it is programmed using FJDS. I know this because I owned a 2013 focus and replaced the TCM with one off of a 2016 Fiesta. Worked fine, and still works today. If you get a TCM from a Focus for a Focus, it may not need programming but will still need the “relearn”. Not trying to put this guy on blast, but if a bearing fails in any transmission, that transmission is no good unless you tear it all apart and replace every part that all that metal got in. Otherwise you’ll be pulling it back out in 15k miles at the most. Same as if you reset that clutch. All in all, find a shop you trust and get a diagnosis, then get a second opinion if you don’t trust shops. I promise you, not every shop is looking for a pay day. Some may even offer free diagnosis like ours. Hope this helps.

This is good info, however not everyone has 1 million dollars to replace everything in a old ass car that is worth nothing. Out of 150+ focus fiestas I took apart this year, it was never the clutch, it’s always the forks, sometimes the actuator and rare but happens the TCM. You do this for a living, I do this for fun to save people money. Even if you replace everything inside that transmission, this will happen again eventually, especially if you are using aftermarket parts. I originally took one apart because I didn’t think it was fair for a dealer to charge $5-6k for this job. This shouldn’t cost more than $2k and that is including parts and labor. ✌️
@wh_2526
@wh_2526 Жыл бұрын
@@L8R-HP You’re not wrong, the dealer is overpriced with these simply because they don’t want to fix them just to have them come back. Most trans shops come in around $3500 for everything. Which is cheap compared to a rebuild or replacement of a trans in any other car. Heaven forbid you own a CVT because then you will definitely be over that $6k price point. I loved my focus, I only sold it to get away from the inevitable of having to service that clutch every 50-60k miles. Ford could’ve just as easily put a 6F35 in those cars and saved a lot of trouble. At the end of the day, we’re just mechanics, not the engineers designing this stuff. I don’t doubt your way of working on these cars works, and I won’t question it because everybody views things differently. But if it were mine, I’d save up the $600 to get the kit and just put all new stuff in it while I had it out. $600 for a guaranteed at least 60k miles of life is worth it. Downside to these cars is there’s no real fix other than sell it or keep throwing parts at it every year or two. The problems will reoccur regardless. Get a car with a regular automatic, and keep up with the services on it to get good life out of it. 90% of what we see is a failure at 100k miles because someone didn’t have the recommended service done at 60k miles.

If you are still buying Ford Focus’s. I have a 2016, 4 dr, sedan, heated seats and wheel, back-up camera, etc. i bought it from a dealership (used) in 2017 or 2018 for my mother. She no longer drives, so I need to sell it. Just as I was prepping to sell, the dam car wouldn’t go in reverse… never had am issue with it, only 50k miles. I saw ford added an extended warranty on the transmissions, but apparently my focus was made until November of 2016 and the recall or whatever stopped on models built in October of 2016. I tried to clean the b forks, and that probably would have worked if I didn’t put too much force on it. So that fork spine nut broke. I am actually trying to replace the forks now. I have the tools, and the parts. Taking along time to do. But, i can get it fixed I hope

I found a 2014 focus hatch. With reverse not working, I already knew it was the tcm, and about the warranty. So i bought it, sent it to dealer for recall. Tcm was found to be bad, Ford paid for fix. Then I was notified that my clutch was "destroyed". So with me not wanting any future issues I say yes do it. Costing me $3,290 and 12 days (was originally quoted 3-5 weeks + $3,100). Now I'm worried about what they actually did, if anything?... I hope there's not an issue later on.

I was able to clear the code by turning the key to the second position and back off a few times. Car is shifting fine with no check engine light, so I am selling it to Carvana. Watch other KZbin videos - once the clutch produces enough dust and/or the actuators are out of alignment, the transmission will fail. If you are a mechanic you might try clearing the paint from the grounding points - search KZbin for details. I also bought the car for my college age daughter but consider it too dangerous for her to drive - it will accelerate uncontrollably or stall in the middle of traffic.

I have a 2016 Focus that only had 1 forward gear, no reverse. Trans was shifting fine until clutch went out. I just installed the LUK clutch kit with the new forks and bearing. Now the car has all gears, drives great, but shakes violently in reverse, unless I let off the brake completely. Feels like the clutch is fully engaged when in reverse, even when the car is stopped. I was told the trans needed to be flashed after the clutch replacement, but I just called the dealer to find out how much and they told me they would not flash it until I replace the TCM. The car has 120000 all easy highway miles. Is there another trick to fix the vibration? I lined up the triangles on the flywheel and clutch, and it only vibrates in reverse.
