'I Will Not Stop': Grandma Arrested For Feeding the Homeless Sues, Refuses to Stop Ministry

A 78-year-old grandmother from Arizona who spends her time selflessly helping the poor is fighting back after she says she was arrested for feeding the homeless in a local park. "I will not [stop my ministry]. I don't care what they say. They are wrong, and I'm right," Norma Thornton told CBN's Faithwire. "One of the ways I know I'm right is: I've prayed about it." Thornton explained how her invocations to the Lord always lead other good Samaritans to deliver something she needs. "Every time I'm in doubt, something happens ... suddenly there's a box of food or a bag of food or whatever it is I need," she said. "Blankets showed up here at my doorstep just a few days ago. The temperature dropped quite a bit [and] many of the people were very cold." Thornton continued, "So, God ... put it on somebody's heart to put that food at my doorstep, or that the bedding, or the hygiene stuff." She also discussed the details of her arrest and what motivates her kindness. "The number one motivation is my savior, Jesus Christ, and his Father. We are told repeatedly, the first and most foremost commandment is love," she said. "Love thy neighbor. Love your fellow man. He [said] several times, 'What you do to the least of my people, you so do to me.' That's basically my motivation."

For me it's a thin line. She actually, along with anyone else who is feeding the homeless, really is enabling them. They won't help themselves if they're already being helped by everyone else. And Christ saying love your neighbor, He also tells us if you don't work you don't eat. This is what happens when you read one verse here and there and don't know the context in which Christ speaks. @@JaneCooper190072 many of the homeless are mentally ill.. or they had a job but maybe the business shut down and they couldn't afford to pay their rent.. to think that you are enabling them all is hogwash.. there was actually a TV show that was made in Australia and it was upper to rich class people who went and lived on the streets for 1 full month.. it was eye opening.. they realized how hard it was to find food and a warm safe place to sleep.. many times they went without food. What they realized is how fast the feeling their confidence left.. they realized how hard it is to get out of that situation.. the only way they can get back on their feet is literally from a good person helping them dig their way out. Many try to get jobs but they can't because of their smell or appearance.. these are human beings.. your fellow brothers and sisters and that's how GOD will see them. You don't know why or how they all got I'm their situation but they got there.. yes some because of addictions some because of laziness.. some from job loss or bad luck! Most of them didn't jump up and down excited that they became homeless.. they found themselves there and maybe don't have family to help them. God says treat others the way you like to be treated. You can go back and forth between Bible versus but all and all the Lord wants you to help your fellow man.. just as a Jew would even help out a gentile on the side of the road

That's cold. Maybe they can't work and don't bring in money to feed themselves. Elderly people hardly have enough money to eat. Today it's really difficult. I pray I am never in that situation again. My husband made good money until he almost died from a brain anyerizum. Long story short, he went on disability and that took years to get. We didn't have much. No food hardly. How do you know what someone is dealing with? Pray to God you don't have the same outcome. I want to hear you say the same about yourself. You are cold hearted.

@AnnRuth I agree with you. They typically are the least judgemental, most kind and protective. I rarely give money but figure that I'd happily pay for lunch or coffee when meeting up with friends so what's the difference to buying a sandwich etc for these people and sitting for a while with them. I walk away feeling so humbled. They generally are equally as interested in my problems (which pale in comparison).a few weeks ago I lost my brother and the guy I stopped to talk to, (nothing else, no food, no money) literally dried my eyes and hugged me and counselled me. Turns out over the course of his life he'd lost so many people, he wanted nothing from me but it was beautiful in retrospect seeing him rise to help somebody else. Others have stood with me whilst I've been alone at night waiting for buses to get home from work or for friends to join me. Yes there are some aggressive beggars, but in my experience, they tend not to be the genuine homeless but those in active addiction who I've watched get off buses, or out of cars, wipe mud over themselves and approach multiple people. Genuine ones tend to have given up, sit quietly not asking anybody for things and do their best to keep clean and they definitely don't get lifts home as the foot traffic slows of an evening. They don't stand out in the pouring rain letting blankets and sleeping bags get soaked. They rely on these tiny comforts far too much to risk that. It makes me sad seeing how councils have added arm rests along benches and retractable spikes in doorways to deter rough sleepers. They only serve to stop the none genuine ones who were never going to curl up to sleep in those places anyway. I don't even object to genuine ones using substances as Lord knows I'd need something to numb the various pains and hopelessness of sleeping rough and being looked upon as less than. We are all only one bad paycheck, or traumatic incident from ending up there too. Life is cruel, we don't have to be!

This is insane. My wife was feeding about 60 people twice a week. It was a lot of work. The local police had a building close by that was not being used. They allowed us to use it. Nice place with tables and chairs. A few people were a little scared at first but they found that the police didn't bother anyone.

The women and youngsters are at added risk when homeless, especially when violence or lack of love is the driving factor making them HAVE to leave. This lady is making people face their prejudices. Sure, there are some freeloaders that will take advantage, but they will be visible in God's eyes and will be made to attone, so actually, they will be, eventually, forwarding the cause.

I lived in Mohave county Arizona for over 6 years. The small fry leadership there has no sense of integrity. Considering they do have homelessness and other problems as most areas do, rather than put resources in that direction to help solve the problems, their actions only help create homelessness. I had 5 acres and put up a shed. Didn’t need permits because it was under 300 square feet. What Mohave county does is spend their resources hiring an airplane to consistently map the area like a grid to see if a structure pops up. Then they send their goons to your front door. Even being in the right I had to fight for my right not to tear down my shed and be fined. I eventually moved away. Far to California like in the mentality of squeezing people of their pennies at the expense of letting the needy go without food

There are. My friend once took me with her to help volunteer at a church. So many people were there volunteering it was amazing. I was helping by passing out necessities like socks shampoo toothbrushes and the little things. But people were being feed. Not judging you through a youtube comment, and I think this lady is right. But we've seen what happens with cities that essentially incentivize homelessness, especially on the west coast. Dirty needles littering the ground, people getting harassed by deranged people who belong in an asylum, etc. I've tried to help the homeless, even letting one stay in my guest room for a couple nights. He gave me his sob story, which turned out to be a complete lie. He was actually a deranged stalker who had routine screaming episodes, threatened me and my roommate when he was asked to leave, talked about how badly he wanted to kill people, and tried to claim residence when we had to call the police to get him to leave. It's unfortunate, but I've learned through experience that most people who are homeless in my city brought it onto themselves. I feel for homeless people that have to be associated with the drug-addled, deranged parasites. Especially veterans.

The US has huge infrastructure all over the country to feed, cloth and shelter the homeless. Those resources, when designed effectively in line with laws, incentivize homeless to leave public spaces (like the park she was serving them in) and move to areas that can help them and keep them and the rest of the public safe. When people like her incentivize them to stay in those public spaces, like a public park, then all sorts of crime increase including crime that impacts the homeless themselves. This individual doesn't have the foresight to understand that and simply sees the world through raw emotion and cherry picked scripture. Christ doesn't say to break laws and create chaos to virtue signal. He says give unto Caesar what is Caesar's because he respected the law. The homeless could easily go get those resources elsewhere and leave the park so that children and mothers could freely enjoy the park (which was why it was put there in the first place) without the threat of someone with mental issues becoming violent toward people simply trying to relax at the park.

She's delusional, she believes everyone deserves happiness. I worked for years with homeless in NY and NJ, most chose to remain homeless. Most are drug addicts, they refused help with addiction and most refused help with employment. Our lives are what we make of it, and the homeless that refuse help deserve what they get. Her feeding them is enabling them, it frees up money for dope. I quit volunteering several years ago, way too many people who didn't want to help me to help them. I think Jesus would agree... Can't help those who refuse to help themselves.

He got lots of chances - but never could conquer his demons. He died at 63 of a heart attack, by himself in an ER. Easier said than done. Not everyone homeless wants a home. And some may have family members. If one gets sick from the food, has some type of allergic reaction, or dies, after eating the food, then watch family members be ready to sue the state. We are in a litigious world. We have forgotten that kings of the past KNEW the voice of the masses WAS the "voice of God", & the king relented because his reign & his life was in danger.
