Its amazing how easy Patterning is forgotten as a midi sequencer. Its so damn quick and intuitive. Duplicate pattern, double or half. Draw anything, live record anything. Nudge a pattern left or right. Nothing else on ios does it so well and elegant. Just make a template that contains probability. Which is not in the modulation list by default. Its amazing as a midi sequencer. Its one of the few apps that does not disrupt flow. Not even when switching samples. Its made for probability and polyrhytms. I like the features of playbeat but these devs must have really hands. Using those apps with touch is like having the wrong mouse speed settings and not being able to fix it. Desktop app devs should dive deep into touch interfaces design an interaction. Same for Drumcomputer. Brilliant app. Not intuitive at all because its out of proportion. When a user has to be really precise to tap or slide a tiny movement on 3 pixels. Its simply bad design. The app might be great feature wise, but touch UI/UX is not considered many many many times. The interaction with a touch interface is very fewer steps in eye hand coordination. Devs need to take care of this advantage. Not removing it by having a desktop/mouse aporoach thinking its the same. Its not.

A hardware synth that has probabilities for every attribute is the Korg Wavestate, (also available as VST by the way). They have different sequencer lanes for a lot of attributes, so you can have polyrhythms between for example pitch loops and volume loops. Each step has a probability and if the probability isn’t met then the next step of that attribute will be played instead. Also you can switch random sequence direction on or off per attribute (e.g. your pitches are picked randomly from all the sequencer steps but your gate lengths are picked in a fixed order). This creates a ton of options. You know what: this comment makes me want to turn on my Wavestate and make something, see you later!

Generative music apps like Wotja are built on this kind of concept. Here's a thought for you - for each value you want a randomness control, you really want two: one for how likely it is to vary, and another for how much variation you want. So you could have a value that is very random within a small range (say to make velocity feel less robotic), or a low chance of randomization but with a potential for a very wide variation (like that could sound almost like a playback mistake). Pure randomness tends to sound like noise, but when you control it's scope a bit, it can make things sound lively and more real.

Playbeat 3 can randomize steps, density, pitch, flam, volume and pan every x bars. You can lock/exclude instruments from randomization. You can even randomize samples from the library per instrument slot, although the latter has to be done manually. But since all this stuff can also be cc midi mapped its pretty flexible.

Drambo can do a lot with probability. You can for example add a random condition followed by a transpose to individual steps in a clip. Almost everything can be automated. Or you just build your own probability sequencer with the available modules. Works great - at least for me.

Usually you will see a set of sliders with one slider for each step. Tap on “comp” to switch to computing mode. It should ask you to select a step. Once that is done you can add various components to the step. One module is called “Random Condition”. All modules to the right of this module will be processed according to the selected probability.

There’s a module in MiRack called ratchet. A simple midi in ➡️ratchet➡️midi out (save) now call it up on any midi stream in aum & hear it stutter. You can Cc map the ratios and probability I do this with all the modules I like… save a single module with the i/o all connected & can call each one up as a plug-in throughout AUM

After getting my first Elektron device, the Model:Cycles, I really jumped in and enjoyed that type of workflow very quickly. One of my favorite things is being able to set probability on a step or a whole track, mess all the tracks up at once and then go back etc. Some of that is there with Drambo but you have to do the work to set it up or use someone else’s preset thats done the work. I like not planning out every step exactly, so having options to make it less monotonous is great. I think its one of the reason I like modular stuff, like miRack where you can have sequencers and control login and sequence your sequencers etc.

I'd like devs to include a minimum of two randomization sliders per parameter. In addition to the first slider that controls the % (likelihood) of a parameter being modified, a second slider would enable us to set the maximum amount of deviation. For example, for pitch, the first slider would specify the prob that the pitch is changed, and the second slider the amount by which it can change. Additional settings would specify up only, down only, or both directions. This would give us the flexibility to mold randomization to best fit the music. Thanks again. Send this video to every dev you know! 😀

Probability for everything sounds like fun, but it’s moving these drum machines far from the drummer replacement concept. I love both these products and I have a theory ‘realism scale’ where Superior Drummer 3 is on the right, and BreakTweaker or DrumComputer on the far left. Purists realize there are experimental beats that a real drummer could never play (unless they had 4 hands) with sounds no kit could ever create. So there’s the pure drummer camp versus the experimental beats camp, where probability and chance might be cool 😃

Drambo can di this to some degree. If you go to step components you can randomize retrigger and transpose. I have tried to randomize different values on the same step and that gave some wired results but one value pr step works perfectly. Unfortunatly you can’t randomize velocity, offset and gate length since thise parameter are linked to linked to the note it self. GOD DAMN I LOVE DRAMBO❤️

I would love to see linked steps for probability. There was a desktop midi app called Stochas that was awesome in this way. For example say you had a pattern where you wanted the snare to kinda randomly be either on 3, or on 2 and 4. You could put steps in at 1, 3 qnd 4, put the probability of beat 2 at say 40%, link it positively to beat 4, and negatively to beat 3. If it happened trigger on beat 2, beat 3 would never happen but beat 4 always would. If it didn't trigger, beat 3 would play (whether beat 4 would play in this scenario depends how the feature is implemented.) That's just an easy to explain example, but I find myself wanting something like that quite often. Also... I was thinking in DC that probability is more prescibed... like it plays every 2nd time or every 3rd time, which is not really probability at all. I might be remembering wrong though. I know there's some app that uses the term probability in this way. I think both options are good to have though!

One MIDI effect I use a lot in AUM is Cem Olcay’s Melody Bud. It has randomization and probability on almost everything. And it has one feature in ratcheting that I’ve never found in anything else: if you put ratcheting on a step, and also have pitch randomization on that step, then it randomizes the pitch of each step of the ratcheting. I’ve tried routing MelodyBud to a drum kit and this produces some really interesting results…

The centerpiece, must-have app for any generative variety that I do with iOS (Audiobus or AUM) is Midiflow Randomizer. It works with AUM by starting Randomizer from the ipad or iphone home screen, choose “continue without audiobus” and then it can be found under MIDI Outputs and then MIDI Destinations. You need to place it after a generator - Rozeta Collider, OODA, Fugue Machine, etc. That is how it works in AB3 also but AB3 doesn’t need a kickstart from the home screen from newer iOS devices. I have also used it with keyboards to mess with what I am doing. My typical workflow is generator -> randomizer-> scale/note quantizer -> actual sound producing app/synth. My favorites for scale quantization are the Keybud scalebud apps (there are now 2) or Rozeta Scaler. Check my channel for a generative/improv from this past July called “Original Creole Hum.” At the very beginning you can see me set it up in AB. I have a number of vids like that, especially from the past 2020. My channel is a mess though! It is probably not for everyone but it does +/- 127 for note, velocity and time (note start time, so similar to something you see in Fruity or like swing). It can crash occasionally - especially in situations under higher CPU or older systems, just based on my old iPhone and iPad. It actually is more reliable in AUM than AB, IMO. HaQ, I love your channel. Just joined Patreon this week!

From the hardware side, Polyend Play kinda has some of the things but not everything. There is a Chance and Randomize button and each can select different actions. Randomize can select texture, octave and volume in addition to samples. Chance can select random note, sample, octave up/down, micotune, cutoff, repeat, start/end time and a humanize. A future firmware might be something to include the everything option you suggest. Good suggestion and thinking outside the box!

I wanted to mention the Polyend Play as well. To combine randomization and chance is just amazing. Something like a hihat groove where you set a 40% chance that a note will play a random sample from a folder with hihat samples. I had about two hours with the Play at Superbooth and as far as I can tell the workflow and the sequencer is very innovative and worth to study for competitors.

Finally I see someone down in the comments here mention Playbeat (dev:Audiomodern), beside myself loool. seriously, it’s the one that’s been around for a while and I think have seen birth and a fair share if user base somewhere around the same time as for those apps that you showcase in the video. basically all the main features of a “randomization-based drum sequesncer” are present. actually, i wouldn’t say that it’s any better or worse than two sequencers that you talk about - from what I see, they are pretty much the same in the core - so I use Playbeat for years just because I happened to discover it first than any other similar tools, and since it does its job very solidly and reliably, I just see no point in changing this tool for any other. but if you in the state of research of the subject and collecting data - i would recommend to take a loot at this one. another Audiomodern’s generative app is Riffer. If Playbeat is all about drum patterns and rhythmic/percussive stuff, Riffer is all about pitch-based/melodic, a very solid piece of software as well - with ability to quantize its midi inputs to musical scales etc, etc, etc. great well built stable stuff. also a monstrous generative lab is Wotja. it is just insane, I won’t even mention anything it is capable of here, ‘cause it would take ages to make a list of “main features” - ‘cause it does literally everything that’s possible and could be wished for - you name it loool. but yeah, it is basically a whole universe in its own rights that’s why it really requires some time to get your head around to be able to navigate through it efficiently enough and not to get lost somewhere in the middle. but again - if you’re researching the subject and unfamiliar with this one yet - i would strongly recommend to take a look at this one. actually it’s cool how you focus a noticeable part of your recent content on the generative/randomized nature of music production, glad to see these videos.✌🏽

It’s probably just a few feature requests away. I love probability mayhem, at the same time, I need full control at certain points, within AUM, a full probability system for every parameter sounds so tasty. The possibilities. I have this obsession with trying to find the perfect sequencer or combination of sequencing and my top picks are the same, DC (because of the ability to move a hit to the right or left) and hammerhead for the mutation/ chaos. There are attributes in all the sequencing in iOS that are unique and different… but not one has them all. Maybe Drambo lol. You kinda inspired my post in iPad musician. It's totally different than what they develop for content for the apps!!! Right now I gotta 3 tablet iOS set up to work with aum, (( no audiobus. Because sum apps don't wanna work how I want them too. I need a lot more flexibility with apps. And the core of what I am finding is a set up I feel is like others. Depressing. )) Now from chordjam to scaler, scale bud and atom 2 for a.i. chord help. in all my chord fingering chordjam as of right now. Loopmix. (( I like for loopmix seems like simpler a.i. fix to a random mute generator feature. Which turnado does a lot of the same with a better way to add twisted effects to what was muted and changed. Effectrix I can't get behind it any better than I have bought it. But struggle to get the value from it like looperator. I got apps dat I watch others use dat I don't get the same vibes others have gotten from these apps. ))) U add any audio modern app to change how many ways u can acustom a sound with a few tweets of a knob from bram bos enhancers or hype gate plug ins and they go h.a.m. for my person they do!!! (( hard as mooo )) if I had a 3rd just a drum machine app of seperation of tracks. No.... Rhythm section. I got few other apps I keep saying I will buy but the ones I have have, have my person very close to creating the sound I wanna share with u on utube. But no where close to dat right now Not a lot of work on my end other than to buy. Dat would take my chop and screw ideas to the level of showcase of what others could do. Which is twisting everything created in the apps. I am looking at eg pulse. U showed mi eg pulse. It's a lot of work like beatmaker 3. Which beatmaker I have yet to get to use this in the way non stop do I wanna use nothing else but. I gotta look at drumbo. And their is a few granular set ups. Dat just changed the game to focus on production from this only!!! Makes mi wanna get a 4th I pad for just granular synths!!!!!! Ahhhhhhhhhh
