Hey Dale, Dale here- you're absolutely right about everyone feeling the way you do about your passion, they feel extremely similar if not exactly the same about their own passion. I'm a drummer / musician of 25+ years and recently I've realized that doing OTHER things outside of music brings a deeper appreciation for when I do jump back into getting behind the kit. Other interests have also sparked creativity for my music as well, which is very exciting. Love your videos bro! Keep doing what makes YOU happy Dale!

I remember Joe Rogan talking about his passion of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Everything he said about it applied to my passion of skateboarding. Then Joe Rogan had Tony Hawk on his podcast and didn’t take anything he was saying seriously at all. He looks at skateboarding the same way most non-skaters do. They will never understand and that’s okay.

Man you are making a lot of sense. I’ve felt that way with skating, how you go back and forth with perfecting the craft and doing it just for fun. I always go back to the that aspect and try to remember to smile and enjoy every moment I can on the board, since who knows how long we got .

I feel this. The hyperfocus grind on being a creative musician, similar to how one might grind on pushing themselves to progress with skating... it gets to a point where it feels limiting. It takes a lot of practice to not be mean to ourselves when we stop going hard at something we love and have thrived in. Also relate in that sometimes at gigs I'm bored as hell and not feeling it, and it's okay to not push myself to move/dance/socialize. Next set, next gig, next weekend might inspire/move me more. Making room for mediocre experiences lol. Good to hear these thoughts as someone moving into skateboarding as a break from being so headstrong into music making. I think there's a strongly implied "stick to the thing you're best at" energy in our current brand/content culture when really there's a broad set of experiences we can explore and enjoy. Thanks for sharing

I hated small talk most of my life, 20s and 30s, and thought no conversation is worth it unless it's meaningful, until I realised, I needed it. Little interactions about the weather or what you did at the weekend are little package sized connections to others, sometimes they go deeper, but mostly they don't or even need to. They're especially essential as you get older and have kids, which is the point of your life where most of your time is spent with family, and those little chats at the gym for example are necessary moments of sharing.

For those of us that are a little bit older,. you're at the point right now.Where a lot of your childhood / taught beliefs are being challenged by the reality of the real world... It's a dangerous place to be and why some people fall into xonservative cult like behavior because the get desperate to find a new Ideology to replace the old one.... That's when you gotta make sure you're staying rational, kind ...and keep your hands on your wallet cause plenty of folks will try to sell you a new panacea.... (there Isnt one tho ..)
@daledecker4 ай бұрын
For sure! People search for shit like q anon to give their lives meaning because I think deep down they and maybe all of us feel that existential dread that it all might be meaningless. But I’m kind of okay with that honestly. I hope I dont give off any sort of conservative cult vibes. My belief systems haven’t changed.
@daledecker4 ай бұрын
I also wanted to add to this I think as you get older the naivety of the way you see the world starts to fade away and you can see things for what they are, it can be a little devastating but I’m also glad I’m able to see it for what it is cuz I was that guy that was “allergic to not skating”. I shed to thinking working out was so wack and how could anybody be into something that’s so lame.

This is the way, as we get older and have more life experience and confidence in who we are, we become more aware of what makes us happy and helps us grow as a person. Too many people get stuck and stagnant. Keep making moves bro
@BudetSvobodnoy4 ай бұрын
I can relate to that. Always had this idea of going to skate to be "good" and to keep consistency, even when I didn't have any energy to skate. But at some point I realized that I am not going pro anyway (I started skating when I was 20+ so that was obvious from the beginning) and I just have to skate when I WANT to, so I can actually enjoy it. I also have this new thing that I am doing for the last year, that I am focusing on and I plan to actually make a career from this one. But I gotta remember that if it gets boring at some point in the next 5 years, I shouldn't just keep doing it, I can use that knowledge and go into something else. Just like how I used skateboarding mentality in my life (Which is: you can learn anything if you try 1000 times and failure means that you just got better)

Glad you're keeping the videos going. I like to hear your point on these things!
@NoxiousPond4 ай бұрын
I'm so glad I got back into skateboarding at 35 because like you said it's not necessarily the tre flip down the 5 stair I landed (just an example I can't do that at all) it's the community and people I'm meeting along the way that's keeping me coming back to it. Being in my thirties has allowed me to truly appreciate skateboarding in ways I couldn't have at a younger age. The only con to it is I need time to warm up before I skate well and it is harder to learn these things because of my age.

9:07 had the exact same feeling with jazz music. I know it sounds really irrelevant to the vid but I studied jazz drums for a long time throughout childhood and I recently dropped out of music college mostly because of a similar thing to what you say about skating. Feels so relatable. The whole depiction of jazz music is that there are no rules and that everything's cool and 'we're all here to have a good time!' but in reality there is SO much elitism and it's pathetic like if you said like oh I love like Charlie Puth, you could physically feel the judgement lol.

The whole “were creative we think outside the box” mentality in skating is so toxic. The very second you even talk to someone about something that is outside of skating or even skating tricks in it of themself, like you said everyones super judgemental. Especially with content + then they go “nah wont watch” or “you fell off” etc etc. totally with ya

This sounds awful! I guess I’m lucky I grew up skating and in the early 90’s we didn’t have all that bullshit. It was just pure fun and self expression. Skateboarding means you don’t give a fuck what others think. Most skaters are good at lot of different things. Its always there for you, you put in the work. BJJ, music, art is the natural progression as you age out of everyday skating. Whatever you do it’s from a skateboarding perspective.
