Spot on. This is exactly the advice I would give to a beginner, especially the part about it being ok to paint badly. Too many people think a bad anything is a sign of failure rather than a step towards growth.

Yesss paper is so important! Whenever I paint on Arches I feel like I can do anything 😍

Great tips! Using big brushes was the biggest game changer for me! And using cotton paper. Those two things elevated my painting quite a bit even though there’s a long way to go. I’m still working on composition a lot lately and that has also been really nice to see improvement there.
