The reason the industry & professional teams now use wider tires & rims is because the extra volume + _lower pressure_ smooths out micro vibrations, which slow you down (smoother = faster). Most TDF teams ran 28mm tires in 2023 & 2024. Note: the old school rolling resistance tests are done on steel drums, not on actual pavement.

Good to know, thanks! I think it really depends on the quality of the roads. 25s possibly still faster on fresh smooth pavement

@@TwoWheelCruise that's not what the data shows. Again, the World Tour teams have put their riders on 28s. Their roads are generally _far better_ than your pavement there in MI. Anyway, there's been lots of analysis across the industry (for road use, not just gravel), if you care to Google.

I like the feel of thinner tyres as it makes me FEEL I am going faster lol. Plus lower weight at the outside = faster acceleration feel. But for gravel 35-40mm is good or I get too beat up. But I can handle 27mm gravel if not too much tech.

@@andrewnorris5415 I used to ride on 21s at 110-1220psi, when 23s were considered fat road tires. Our "feelings" can deceive us.

@@malcontent_1 agreed. I tried 25, 28, 29, and 30. I love how wide the inner width of Specialized Roval wheels are so I to get something similar, I got a pair of custom built wheels from Farsports that has 25mm internal rim width, 30 external and 32mm at the widest point of the rim. If any rims are compatible with 25mm tire, then they won't be wide enough to future proof them.

A YTer did a test and sent bike/wheels in TV boxes. They were treated way better than when marked as a cycle! Nice wheels, light wheels change a bike as accelerate so much faster. I would go for deeper dish like you did, as more comfort, I can handle the odd gust of wind. Have made a note to consider these wheels when shopping for a set. Will see how you get on with them. Coming without the rim tape fitted may be better as can check for cracks that may have occurred in transit.

That makes sense with the TV boxes. Some bike companies even use that approach 😂

Very nice review. Cool looking tires and bike. Just curious: what was your top speed on the test ride? Seemed hecka fast. Appreciate the technical info the way you explain it here-your easygoing approach to the technical aspects nicely topped off with video footage of your test ride! If I was as in to road bikes as much as you, I’d give those really cool looking tires a try! Thanks for consistently letting us know how much fun and also how challenging cycling can be.

I stepped up to 28mm 2 years ago when I bought my new Emonda, but I wish I had gone just a touch larger, say 30mm. An additional benefit of larger tire/lower pressure is larger contact patch, which is especially nice for crits.

I've heard bad things about road cycling in the US. Nice to see you have such pleasant roads to train on. I guess it's lack of infrastructure in cities/towns that is the issue. These back lanes look great. Also a local walking and mtb trail!
@TwoWheelCruise3 ай бұрын
It's hard to make generalizations about the US because it's so big and diverse. Michigan roads are pretty bad, but we have a lot of great gravel roads fortunately

Love the etching of the logo on the rims. Looks very classy. The wheel bags are a bonus. About the deep section wheels, do you find that they offer more stability at high speeds? Somewhat like the rudder of a plane. On another note, I also like the sound of carbon wheels. I find that it helps with concentration and enjoyment.
@TwoWheelCruise3 ай бұрын
I don't notice any difference in stability. If anything, deeper rims are less stable in crosswinds, but not an issue if you're used to it / a bit heavier

I live in Minnesota with terrible roads too and going to 32mm did improve some of my times. I've heard lots of theories, like with a bigger tire you'll lose less momentum over rough surfaces, but who knows? Maybe it's just more comfortable. 😅
@TwoWheelCruise3 ай бұрын
Sometimes comfort = speed I guess
@andrewnorris54153 ай бұрын
If the tyre hits harder more energy is wasted with the harder hit. It's why lower pressures also work pretty well. But need wider tyres in order to run lower pressure or get damaged rims or pinched inner tubes.

Very smart looking wheels which clearly perform up to expectations. It is surprising to see the lack of maintenance of road surfaces in your area. Is it through lack of funding or mismanagement ? Such a pity, that must wreak havoc with suspensions and lead to accidents. Still, the gorgeous landscape makes up for it !

A couple things: I presume when you say "wider" you actually mean "deeper"; & these wheels are probably hooked not hookless, in light of the delta btwn inner/outer rim width.
