I got in trouble in the early '80's. 3 years, had to serve 18 months. Kept to myself, and kept busy. Got my GED, worked my way out to the honor cabins and worked off property cutting fire wood for .80 a day, yup $4. a week It kept me focused, and not mixing it up with the " I know what to do next time" crowd. It was a reality slap, and I am one of very few that came out in a better spot. We all have it in us, it's how much you want to work, to realize it's potential. There are some folks that belong in prison for a long time, even life, but in my opinion, it should be avoided at all costs, as a punishment for minor or petty offenses. Anyone not strong enough mentally, will only succumb to a revolving door, it doesn't matter how strong you are physically either, if you can't learn a lesson, or don't want to, what hope is there?

I think we should extend the concept of half way houses to half way prisons for no violent offenders with 5yrs or less on their sentence where rehabilitation, re-education and re-integration into society can be the focus as opposed to just hard punishment ...The reality is these individuals will be returning to society anyway...do you want an animal coming back in or a fairly conditioned human being?...sadly the for profit prison system makes it's money by keeping the prisons filled and ensuring recidivism.

As an officer at a prison I don't know how to feel about this video. I work at a level 3 with all sorts of criminals and very rarely see any good occur. When I worked at a juvenile facility I saw more good come from that but got treated worse as an officer there. I appreciate the regulations and rules adult prisons have however I do think that humane and good programming is needed to help those incarcerated. I just very rarely see it. And that's a shame.

Lil_Jei America needs to address the problem of why it incarcerates people at a rate higher than anywhere in the world first. And America also has the highest number of incarcerated people (just checked). THAT issue needs to be addressed first. In my opinion it's not only a problem of over policing but a mental health problem as well. China has 1 billion people yet America's incarceration rate is DOUBLE that of China with a population of only 370 million in the US. For profit prisons maybe? Either way there is something very wrong in America going on. Greatest nation...BS, only the wealthiest. Or maybe all that entertainment on TV and poor schooling leads to undiscipline people.

The prison system is to punish people first and foremost, not change people into better people. Rehabilitation is secondary, but of course also important. If you can tell me a better alternative to JUSTLY *punish* people, I'm all ears. The punishment has to fit the crime.
@scottb5494
@scottb5494 6 жыл бұрын
Taking your freedom, taken away from friends and family, locked in a cage, IS the punishment. Now, these people will eventually be back in our society. It is in our best interest to emphasize rehabilitation. When you lock someone up, treat them unusually poor, with no education, rehabilitation, or a possibility for future work, they will most certainly cause harm to society again.

@@lights473 Punishment is you doing to someone what they did to someone else. It only avails the people who would otherwise become the criminals they want to punish. American justice is just punishment. Rehabilitation takes a person who made big mistake, figures out why they made them, and sends society a healthier person. While justice helps individuals get revenge, rehabilitation helps society get better.

"big think" this video has no thought at all. this system is so much worse than that. there shouldnt even be a reason people need to be both "ill shank you" and "im not violent anymore" the us prison system is practically the only prison system where inmates are so violent towards eachother, regardless of their individual charges. you shouldnt have to be forced to carry a shank. the guards shouldnt have to be forced to allow it. private businesses shouldnt profit off prisons. more money needs to go into rehabilitation and mental health sciences if we ever want to grow into a stronger nation.

There is too much money in the prison system in America. Nothing will change by sitting around talking about it. Real shit has to go down for something to change, which is very sad. Even tho most Americans believe in rehabilitating people and getting a use out of minor offenders, instead of letting them slip into the circle of repeating offenses after every sentence. Democrazy my ass. Money is power, and power is money.
@Soletestament
@Soletestament 6 жыл бұрын
Except most Americans don't actually believe in second chances and rehabilitation. They SAY they do, but reality is there is a significant lack of trust among Americans when it comes to ex-convicts and criminals serving time. Victims almost always fight for maximum sentences, and business owners and landlords avoid dealing with ex convicts as much as they legally can get away with. Mercy, forgiveness, but most of all trust, just isn't in large supply here. But to be fair.... good people get burned a lot in this world.

@@Soletestament Sure, you're right. This is a conversation that can go very deep and deals with fundamental societal functions in America, but for the sake of the platform we're on, I'll leave that for another day. Regardless, you have to start somewhere. This whole situation isn't going to improve itself by distrust, anger and voting on crooked politicians that say one thing but do something completely different(or don't do at all). It starts by changing how people think, what values they're shown and taught when young, how you treat your neighbour etc. That's far more powerful than your vote in the next 2-3 upcoming elections.

I agree the system is not designed to help you whatsoever. But it's also because it was designed that way.. I'm going to State an unpopular opinion.. First I would like to clarify I know very well the quote by Jackson, "those that are willing to give up their freedom for safety deserve neither" I think that that mindset could have been true at a different time, but with the sheer amount of people on this planet, the mixing and differences in opinion and lifestyle, we need a way to safeguard all people and keep them credible. It's well-intentioned when you assume that people will do or have the best intentions.. but we can see that this is incorrect. We need cameras in every public place on every street corner and in every nook and cranny. There will be no more cause or reason for anyone to misinterpret what happened in any situation. And rightfully so, when you are in public you should not assume that you have any right to privacy. Also we can understand that the reason why people are repeat offenders, is because they understand the consequences and they're okay with dealing with them, because they're not so harsh that it would cause them to stray away from their initial intention to cause harm or to do something criminal. Steaks need to be raised. Everybody has the possibility of making a grave mistake in recovering from it. So I still think that there needs to be strikes. But if it is proven that you have repeatedly offended, have done something extremely violent, or coerced or forced someone to do something violent because of your power. You should be put to death. I'm a Hindu and I don't believe in harming, but I understand that majority of people will only listen to reason if they understand the severity of the consequences. Death is the absolute consequence. I guarantee you wife beaters, School shooters, Mass murderers, serial killers, sex traffickers would not be involved in the things that they're involved in if you are very clear about the repercussions of their actions. If you commit a violent crime once you will be put in a detainment facility and forced to rehabilitate; this is not lost on me that we need actual prison reform to where people are given literal opportunities rather than stuck inside of a pit with killers.. the second time is your demise. There are no excuses, there is no life in prison. You will executed. I guarantee you crime will plummet dramatically.
