In the last few years, robotic vacuum cleaners have gotten immensely more useful thanks to camera vision obstacle avoidance and auto-empty stations. Because, what good is a "do it all" robot if you have to maintain it every day or two? But even as robot vacuums have gotten more maintenance free, they've never been able to tackle a big part of floor cleanup: mopping. Dragging a slightly damp pad behind the robot's path is hardly a pathway to a clean floor and vibrating pads aren't much of an improvement. Not only does the new ECOVACS X1 OMNI actively SCRUB the floor, but it even has a station that periodically cleans the pads, fills up the robot's water reservoir, and even dries the pads after a cycle allowing for truly maintenance-free operation. This video is sponsored, yes, but this vacuum is unreasonably cool and I love it (they can't pay me to say that)!

We got all of our Mac Studio and Studio Display stuff late and we didn't want to rush hot-take content out the door. We have begun production on two extremely well-produced reviews with (what I believe to be important) information/testing missing from every review I've seen thus far. Stay tuned, it'll be worth it. It looks that the current versions of the professional video production apps (including the current FCPX) don't utilize the ultra chips especially not the GPU cores. Puget bench for after effects beta gives the same score for the m1 max and the ultra... I wonder when will they update the programs to fully harness and scale of the ULTRA chips... I want to buy the studio Ultra but still on the fence about choosing 48 vs 64 GPU cores. And also 64 vs 128 GB ram... Since the current videos don't really show a substantial difference that is worth the price... Would love to hear your thoughts about it.. Looking forward your videos! Thanks!

This one doesn't vacuum carpets though whenever the mops are installed. Roborock does, it automatically lifts the mop as soon as it encounters a carpet, which for me is a huge advantage. Also, I totally see how this type of mopping is better, but my guess is that it doesn't make much of a difference if the floor gets mopped every day due to the auto-refill and -empty station.

Don't feel too bad, I guarantee these things don't work nearly as good as they advertise, especially in a normal home with actual clutter on the floor. (Also, I found it a little odd that he talked about cleaning carpet, but didn't actually show the thing doing it.) I had one of the original Roombas (the ex bought it without my knowledge) and it was a complete waste of money. Not because the idiotic thing couldn't cover the floor properly or because it got stuck on everything, but because it just plain sucked at cleaning the floor. I would be very skeptical of the cleaning abilities of any robotic vacuum cleaner, especially one that costs $1400. For that much money, it better leave the entire floor spotless. I'd much rather just buy a cheap vacuum and a Swiffer and save myself a shitload of money.

So actually, there is an OEM solution for this model to top up the fresh water can and dirty water can on its own essentially turning it into a washing machine. And the whole set up process is the same as a washing machine, you give it a fill pipe and a drain port. But that option is quite limited since the you would pretty much need to put it in the laundry room.

Started out with Neato a D5 & then a D7 cleaned great but only lasted 2 years each before they craped out, I now have a RoboVac S9 and Brava M2 (thanks to neato's too bad so sad support), they also clean extremely well, and tag team for a full clean. The Achilles heel has always been corners and mop boards when they perfect this I'll be the first one in line for that model. These robots are continuously evolving and it appears that this version of the ECOVAC is the latest step in the evolutionary cycle. What would be interesting would be a 1-year performance update and review the operating and maintenance cost per clean, I love my robot vacuum/mops but have found the cost per clean an eye-popping number given the life expectancy of the actual devices and required purchases to keep them functioning at a high level.

I tried the cheapest Deebot I could find without a main brush and it worked well enough I quickly got a slightly better one with the brush, also really cheap. Then I splurged and got a refurbished Deebot 901 with lidar room mapping and it's been great but slightly fragile. The main brush belt started slipping and they repaired it under the warranty, now one wheel has locked up. I can probably fix it but decided to go with a refurbished Deebot Ozmo 960 with the improved room mapping with the object avoidance camera from Amazon. It should be here Saturday and hopefully will run till I decide to upgrade again. I'd love that new unit but 13 to 1500 is way more than I'm willing to pay. My house is mostly carpet so don't know if we'll use the simple mopping feature but might be good in the kitchen and bathrooms. Great review and I'll keep my eye out for the price to drop. My house stays a lot cleaner without us doing much except cleaning the worst spots or breaking out one of the big vacuums to do a deep cleaning.

I currently own a Roborock S6 and well, the mop functionality isn't great. in addition, the lidar that sits on the robot causes it to not enter certain spots. I may consider upgrading to a Dreame Bot W10 in the future, but until then, my Bissell 2582N can take care of that area.

Ecovacs have amazing features but they all suffer from a failing DToF sensor right around the 1.5yr mark which is out of warranty. This may just be if you have lower furniture because it doesn’t know how tall it is so it will push hard to get under stuff it can’t fit in. You can just use nogo zones to avoid this. Just a heads up if you buy this and in 1.5 yr it gives a DToF error every time you run it.

Does it have a bin full sensor on the vacuum? Biggest disappointment with the Deebot OZMO T8 AVI is that it doesn’t known when its own bin is full. It only returns to the auto empty dock at the end of the job. With carpets the bin often overflows before the end of the job. Roomba’s have a bin full sensor and it seems like an obvious feature. Wonder if it’s patented like the dual rollers.

Thank you for this great video! I’ll let me say more people are interested in this kind of thing than you might think. So please don’t hesitate to post some stuff that you’re interested in because I venture to guess I’m probably interested in a lot of the same things you are. I had one of the first robot vac‘s ever the rumba back in the early 2000s. And you know what it worked awesome. Now I had it on concrete floors my whole house was concrete floors. And as far as navigation goes it did go all over the place but it always cleaned every spot in the end. I don’t believe it was just randomly going all over the place I think it knew what it was doing it just didn’t run straight lines. That doesn’t bother me but I do think it bothers a lot of people. It’s just like my pool cleaner it never runs straight lines either but it doesn’t miss a single inch. Anyway in the last few years there have become so many different models that I have purposely not bought any of them because I’m so confused. I keep thinking Roomba was the first true functional home robot ever invented and they should have the best vacuums but then again I just don’t know everyone is getting in the business. I would like something that mops really well and so seeing this is very encouraging. I’m thinking about waiting till the next version and hopefully they’ll have the pad issue resolved so I can go between carpet and hardwood floors without having to remove the pads. Anyway thank you again great video!

For a current example, look at Nintendo shutting down servers for older consoles with no warning, locking people out of software they've purchased. Knowing that this hardware could run well on your own home network, or even via basic controls on itself, might alleviate some of the concern regarding this inevitability.

I got T8 AIVI after Quinn recommended it, and while it’s certainly good, it’s not AS good. Mapping is extremely buggy in my case, at some point I just gave up and I now run the thing in Auto mode all the time, because one closed door causes it to occasionally remap entire house (one time it got even confused about the relative North and glued together two layouts of our house in one with deferent rotation, crazy). For the record I have multiple Ubiquity APs in the house very similar to what Quinn has, so Wifi is not an issue. I wish app developers just made remapping a manual feature, instead of it happening randomly from time to time, it would be such an easy fix. Cleaning-wise it’s great, apart from auto-empty station. You have to run it literally EVERY day (in our case) to make it auto-empty, otherwise it gets so much stuff that auto empty station is just not strong enough to empty it, which is super frustrating. One solution to that is to have manual schedule and going room by room so it returns to auto empty after each room, but because of mapping issues it’s simply not possible in my case. So we just run it every day and check every day that it auto-emptied. It’s the only robot vacuum I’ve ever used, and I suppose that others are worse, but point of that comment is don’t expect it to be perfect.

None of these things will ever be as good as a human using a mop. The dirtiest part of the floor is under the table and chairs, which these robots can’t get to.

I always like your videos Quinn and I wish I could afford something like this. I just got a new dog and he doesn’t like our robot vacuum very much so I don’t think I’ll be upgrading it until Toshi (my dog) gets used to the one we have now

Really dug the review, however, not a big fan of robot vacuums in general. I believe they have a place to help with keeping up with maintaining cleanliness, but I'll stick with a traditional mop/bucket for the hard floors and a really good stick or upright vacuum for the carpets.

It’s not a 100% replacement to be sure but we’ve gone from vacuuming every other day and mopping 2x a week to vacuuming once a week and mopping only twice a month. Very nice change.

From the looks of it this product really did deserve a special snazzy labs video. Very interested in it. 2 questions: I know you said it’s the biggest single generational leap in the robotic vacuuming market but I’m interested to see or hear more specific comparisons with some of its competitors like dyson and others. And was the snazzy lbs logo subconsciously designed to look like a robotic vacuum? Thanks snazzy!
@xeon2k8
@xeon2k8 2 жыл бұрын
with this specific set of feature there are not many right now, some are missing either auto-emptying the bin or auto-refilling the tank. The direct competitor would be the roborock s7 maxv ultra, at a lower price i think 1300, it's a WAY better value since it's navigation algorithm and mapping are top notch, vibrating mop (not rotating, so it's not THAT good, but still much better than regular mop) and lifting mop, so if you have carpets separating hard floors then it can lift the mop to pass through the carpets (they have to be low or medium pile, since it doesnt lift the mop high enough) and clean the floors. Dyson has no robot vacuum. The ""dyson"" in the robot vacuum world would be iRobot but they are lagging behind, the havent got a fully featured robot, they only excel on carpet cleaning.

This might be my favorite video you've made. Can't believe how satisfying that robot is to watch. I've always liked robot vacuum cleaners. My grandma had the gen1 roomba. It wasn't very good, but it was an interesting look into what the future might have. I might end up forking up the cash for this in a few years

Not bad at all, but for me to having to take the pods off to clean carpeted area is a no go at this price range. Whole thing supposed to run for weeks without human intervention, but then still needs me to take off the pads every time makes no sense. The real advantage it has over the competition is the heating when drying the pads. Cool idea.

Seems like if they figured out the mop->vacuum transition being seamless the price would be worth it imo. Would never have to deal with either one besides emptying a tank every once in a while.

Have you tried the Narwal mop bot Snazzy? Same exact mopping features, but to the market before this one. Not an AIO though - it can only do one or the other at a time. I’ve found great success having it + a dedicated auto empty roomba
@snazzy

At home I’m running a S7 and a Narwal. The app is so, so, awful but since it doesn’t have an internal reservoir like this does, I just throw Lysol in the tank and so it mops extremely well with solution. I think on the whole it mops a little better than this but it’s such a PITA compared to this thing it’s more of a pre-meditated action. Takes me 5 minutes to prep it for cleaning. Still faster than mopping myself but not quite as convenient as this is.

Maybe i am the only one who would find this funny. But i want a bad attitude mode with that voice assistant. Like you ask it to clean the bathroom and its all like "Clean the bathroom again? Why? I just cleaned in there an hour ago! WTF did you do? Why you make so much mess for, i spend all my time cleaning up after you!" Then ramps the vacuum motor upto full and storms out of the room muttering

Does this require a "cloud" service that some day will shut down? Or can you run it fully self hosted? Something I'm not willing to compromise on. When I drop this kind of money I expect it to last decades. And self hosting also is better for security.

I bought one of these from Amazon $1508.12 USD ($150 off when this video dropped) based solely on Quinn's review here. It has...issues. I had to return it. The Amazon return window was 04/29 and Ecovacs were either unwilling or unable to resolve the issue. And I did inform them that I would be returning it if the issue I was running into wasn't resolved by the 28th. That's not to say they did not try. They seem nice enough, perhaps a little married to their script + ESL injecting translation issues into the mix demands additional levels of patience. No issues there. When the thing works and what it does it does well. The issue is the software/AI is still quite beta at best, alpha at worst. My issue is that if the unit starts a vacuum + mopping job and runs into a situation where there is not enough clean water in the clean water tank in the base unit, it alerts as such and pauses the job. The problem is that when refilling the clean water tank and resuming the job from the app, it cleans the mop pads and refills the deebot and then it puts up an overlay animation notice that it is emptying the dust bin. But the vacuum in the base to actually suck out/empty the dust bin doesn't turn on and that overlay never goes away. No other actions can take place from the app or the base's capacitive buttons. The only way to clear this condition is to pull the deebot from the base and let it decide not all is right with itself/situation and return to the base. Once there, it declares the job successful. So there's no way to resume the job from this situation. The app is also super buggy wrt attempting to alter/divide the map. Before I reached out to support the unit would not perform a scheduled job. After reaching out about both issues, the unit suddenly started doing the scheduled job. I never received any acknowledgement, much less an answer, to what it was they did to resolve the scheduling issue. It's especially frustrating because I really wanted the unit to work. What it does do, w/in the paradigm of it not running low on clean water in the middle of a job, it does well. If I always ensured it was full of water every day or so, it would be fine. The point of spending such a silly sum of money on this sort of thing is to automate that kind of toil out of my life. I recommend waiting until the software bakes a bit longer before giving it a whirl. Maybe the hardware/software situation of the X2(?) Omni/X1 Pi(?)/X2 Pi(?) will be more usable. Should be cheaper in any event. In the meantime, I'll redeploy my 3 Roomba j7+ units and go back to weekly moppings.

Have been looking for a while and this is exactly what I am looking for for my office as its all tiles... However... When I click on the link to buy it I get sent to the Australian store (where I am located) and it is not available for sale... Don't want to risk buying a US model as warranty is always an issue and swapping from 110/240v is not always simple. If I didn't have carpets upstairs I would buy 2 but needing to remove the pads on an automatic product seems a bit 'un-automated'. Please give Ecovacs a nudge that if they pay to have you do an advertisement they need to realise your reach is global... its now really pissing me off that I cant find one to buy. PS. what IS the solution for a place with hard floors AND carpet?
