Love this video! My primary gaming machine is a FX-8350 @4.7Ghz with 2230MHz RAM speed and an OC RX580@1435. My other rig on the living room TV is still an FX6300 that I was able to achieve 4.83GHz on and it's paired with an RX480 @ 1375. FX Series cpus get a bad wrap but I'm finding they are, in fact, little treasures! Really enjoy you making these videos!

Windows 10 does make a difference in how well a CPU might perform due to the differences in the scheduler. A scheduler is a small program that the operating system uses to pass tasks to the CPU cores. A good scheduler will try to utilize the CPU cores more efficiently and evenly. So, instead of having CPU 0 ( Core 1 ) Being slammed with tasks, and every other core is pretty much just sitting idle chilling or with very low utilization, you instead get a balanced approach where Core 1 isn't slammed. The other cores are more effectively utilized trying to get them all to the same usage percentage. This way you don't create a bottleneck on a single core; This helps create a balance which significantly improves performance over the old Windows 7 scheduler which would just slam Core 1 and not really care about balancing out things across the other cores not really being used. Also making sure to populate all DIMM slots with a RAM module also does improve performance quite a bit as well and improves how the CPU accesses and utilizes the memory modules. Setting FPS caps also helps keep frame times more stable and helps reduce unnecessary CPU load as you don't need to generate useless extra frames. If you have a 60 Hz monitor for example, there is no real benefit going beyond 60 Hz. Yes you reduce latency in the controls when you go beyond 60 but, it's wildly inconsistent, and the frame rate will generally bounce all over the place. Consistency is far more important once a sufficient level of performance can is achieved. For games like Assassin's Creed Odyssey, a very CPU demanding title, limiting yourself to 30 FPS and enabling double buffer v-sync, gives you a solid, smooth, and tear free gaming experience, even on these older CPUs. AMD FX gets to much hate in my opinion. Vsync gets to much hate as well. Anyway I just wanted to put that out there. Great videos dude.

The FX 6300 was a great chip for the price and a much better choice for almost every scenario when compared to the similarly priced Core i3 2/4. If you consider overclocking, the i3's situation is even worse. However, I'm surprised to see how well it performed... For an old and humble dual core, I thought it would be (a lot) worse. Still, the Intel platform had an advantage: who bought it could upgrade to a Core i7 - or even Core i5 - chip. The only problem is finding one of those for a fair price, something that doesn't always happen. I see some of those used chips still being sold for crazy prices, at least in my country (Brazil). Who bought the FX platform could upgrade to a 8-core chip, but - at least in my opinion - they're not the best choices when compared to Core i5 or Core i7 processors of the same epoch. They're not bad, though. There is an unnecesary hate around those chips, and they offered a good price/performance ratio. A 8-core FX is still pretty capable today. I bought a Core i5 4670K back in the day (Jan/2014) and I'm still using it. It's amazing how capable an old Core i5, Core i7 or FX 6-core or 8-core is. Sometimes I think about upgrading to a Ryzen system, but I'm still happy with this old 4-core, that keeps surprising me. Anyway, fantastic video. Your work is amazing and your methodology is solid. You deserve a lot more subscribers and I wish you success.

at the time the i3 outperformed the fx in almost everything since the i3 has a better ipc. On the other hand, when the applications began to use more cores, the fx was already relegated by the new ryzen anyway. Which repeated the history of fx (but with less consumption) Until the arrival of zen 2, there definitely amd ended with the huge ipc gap that distanced it from intel. Today the 2 companies have very interesting proposals, all of very high value.
@jotabe1984
@jotabe1984 Жыл бұрын
@@Player-xi9dx that's not quite exact... even back then, the extra cores allowed for different task to be allocated in the extra cores, therefore while on pair or maybe even loosing on a single task bench (like a given 2011/2014 Dx11 game) it had extra room for other soft (voice com software, streamming/reccording soft, or just leaving a couple of browser tab open in the background). Productivity wise, there was software even back then (like Handbrake and Sony Vegas) that was already better in Fx CPUs, and yet again even in "single threaded soft" like older Adobe Suites, the extra core improved performance when Multitasking (i.e. having PS and AI opened at the same time). I can confirm first hand this by the experience my wife (i5 2550) and i (fx8350) had with our working PCs and how better the Fx CPU handled productivity back then and still nowadays thanks to the extra cores (sometimes it's not just about to end tasks faster, but to not hang during crucial times due to CPU maxing out) Fx6300 was also very capable for mid-range (4.2/4.5) overclocking with just a 25 buck cooler like 212, a mid range 970 mobo like Asus M5a97 R2 (a mother that packed many more features than a low end intel mobo) and a 500w Psu. That was decent out of the box computing power, but with OC potential at a really really cheap price... And while the aftermarket cooling solution and higher tier mobo cost could put the Fx6300 platform at the same price tag than a low tier i5 with an entry level motherboard, it is worth mentioning that a PC will benefit from better parts, it is very common for low tier motherboards to fail at some degree, something not as common when you step into better range of products.

As someone who still owns multiple older systems including FX I will say that it wasn’t isn’t horrible or bad. It can still do ok. I will however say if you are planning to upgrade please spend your money on a newer generation like Ryzen. First and second (1xxx and 2xxx) gen is getting cheap(er) and with more cores and smt will be a better investment. I went to Ryzen with the R5-2600 and are currently on R9-3900X. Still, atleast two/three times a month the FX9590 with R9 295X2 (modded) retro build still gets used 😜

Probably my previous comment is a bit exaggerated and silly but: www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-fx-pentium-apu-benchmark,3120-10.html With the sub-$100 Pentiums performing so well, Intel's $125 Core i3-2100 easily beats more expensive Phenom II and FX models. And the $190 Core i5-2400 dominates the sub-$200 landscape without challenge, really. As such, we're almost-shockingly left without an AMD CPU to recommend at any price point.

Keeping frametimes and mouse responsiveness nice through all these years, it turned out to be a golden buy for budget gamers. OC is super fun and architecture is truly unique. I love this piece of silicon. FX is a dream. FX is a fantasy. FX is romance. :D P.S. It's very responsive to mem subsystem OC. RAM OC scales almost linearly to the moon and CPU-NB 2400-2600 is a must have for 8c since it's heavily bottlenecked by L3 cache low stock freq. You prob know all that, but just in case)

Despite what some continue to say, there’s nothing wrong with FX chips and yes they have aged better than i3’s and i5’s from those days. I have an 8350 @ 4.6 with a Vega 64 (I know-overkill, but it’s a black and red build and the Vega fits right in). Witcher 3 runs at 1440p ultra with 70-90 FPS most of the time. Some dips to around 60 in novigrad. Destroys any older games also at 1440p ultra. Yes it runs hot and uses more power. But if I’m gaming a few hours a few times a week it might be $20 more a year if that. Big deal.

I absolutely love the fact you went through multiple generations to see how the performance has changed. I hope something similar will be done with Ryzen 5 1600 and i5 7600k or 7500 in the next couple of years. I expected Intel to win in these older titles and was surprised to see it turned out the other way. Few notes: instead of talking about fps difference you should talk about percentages. It's just more informative and professional. Also I'm not a big fun of using low settings for cpu tests especially in these older games. I think lowering the resolution even further to avoid a gpu bottleneck is a better solution as in msot games it almost exclusively affects gpu and not a cpu.

Man I remember back in 2014-5 I was at the crossroads on which system to build based on which CPU to get. My options were: i3 3240 - $120 i3 4130 - $130 FX6300 - $120 I only went the i3 3240 because for whatever reason on Amazon, it sold for $88 USD for just 2 days or so brand new. And even if it didn't, I'd probably still go Intel cuz as you said, it was all single core life back in those days. Now in 2020 I have learnt the value of *headroom*. Even if the cores aren't as strong, I have learnt the value of having CPU headroom for better frame-times and just how beneficial more cores are for multi-processing. From a GPU perspective (I own a GTX 960 2GB), I learnt the value of having the version GPU with the highest amount of VRAM. Headroom headroom headroom.
@RATechYT
@RATechYT 3 жыл бұрын
And it's not your fault either, cause I really don't remember anyone talking about the headroom and frame time situation back in the day. All that was said is you don't need more cores for gaming, and that you only needed them for rendering, multi-tasking etc. All you need is SINGLE CO' POWAH BABE
@guywhoknows
@guywhoknows 3 жыл бұрын
@@RATechYT that's not really true. Before and I am talking AMD X2 and core 2 duo... The multi core launch was not long after multi GPU. The problem is the same for both, there was not much software that would make things work great and it would take a patch for the OS some e time later just to get the perks from the os with multi core. You then ended up with some games using multi core or running on single core, or trying to run badly on multicore. So you could have more cores and worse performance, also due to heat the single performance was lower as it heated the rear of the CPUs in the process which was beyond safe levels. Think of the old intel system, 3.6-4.8ghz single core, best muster of a quad was 2.4ghz. or 3ghz. Game engine and design can take an age to Dev launch plan and all the bits in-between, so games were not all that good or developed for multi core and multi GPU, SLI/crossfire fading. Software had been doing the rounds and not really worked in adding more threads and memory management for multicore. So you would have heard you need good single core performance and multi core is for rendering... But playing games renders.. fact. But having seen first gen and concepts and the benefits. It was always obvious that multi core was good as long as you did get higher clocks, or suitable clock speeds, as there was a lot of games and software that were not designed or could only work patched on multi core and anything above quad.

This system was a great entry level machine and played anything I threw at it which was esports, some triple A titles and Vegas Pro 15. No issues. Sold it for $200 w/trade in of an excavator APU. That was 9 months ago. I have an FX 8350 that I bought as personal use over an i5 2500. I regretted that for a year or two but then stopped around 2016 when I realized it was still running everything I played with acceptable frame rates at 1080p. Mind you while on an HD 7850 2GB. Once I went from an RX 480 8gb to a GTX 1080 FE it no longer mattered. Which goes to show just how much the GPU matters. However all of that will be in the past when these consoles launch.

Good performance value study--and it's entertaining as far as I'm concerned for looking back on the last decade. Sometimes I think Intel is pricing their low/er end cpus the way hamburger gets priced by supermarkets (inflated). When you decide revisit the FX cpus again, I'd like to see more demo on tuning the NB and HT. I think you said it contributed consistency, right, and maybe that too was seen here, with your test comparisons. Thanks.

Very awesome video. I have followed your overclocking video and can confirm that overclocking cpu and ram will increase performance and northbridge overclocking does not have any noticable performance. I have some questions: 1) Have you tried i5 versus fx 8 cores? 2) For fx processors 4GHZ x 6 cores versus 3GHZ x 8 cores, which is better? Could you do a comparison with the i3-7100? I think that you have that chip so doing the 2 would be easy. I know that in the 8300 vid, you did just that. It would be good to see at what level the pure i-3 would be equivalent to the 6300. Going beyond the 7th gen would not be fair as the 8th gen I3 have finally moved to the physical 4 cores. I do have the A8-6600k in my collection of CPUs but as yet i have not tested it. My gut feel would be that the i3-7100 would be slightly ahead on the fx-6300 in most of the games, with FX being still ahead in the multi-threaded rendering applications. A new project for you :)

The first multicore (Dual Core) games one can actually find are from 2004-2005 with some from 2003 being modded or upgraded via patches to use 2 cores to some minor extent. Single-core hasnt been a thing in gaming for 16 years. And 2011 and up we had mostly quad core games. All games past 2013 show at least some gaing from 4 to 6 or 8 cores/threads. People just dont know how to test CPUs and dont play games for real. Reviewers also do not play games for real, they pick an easy to bench sequence at the start of the game and use that.
@Trick-Framed

Many do. I've watched so many that use the in game bench or bench an intro sequence without actually playing the game which makes no sense. These are usually people that are more accustomed to using video editing software and will show you 5 benchmarks for 5 different video suites alongside the a few in game or intro based benchmarks. No good. Need to see the real data. I like RA for this. You can see he plays heavy trafficked maps and areas in games to get his numbers for the most part. This is not optional, but mandatory, to evolve into Ryzen. However, the first and second generation of Ryzen processors do not justify the exchange of an FX for them. The first does not even manage to overcome an FX 8350. In several FPS tests the first Ryzen are overcome with some advantage by the FX 8350. The second generation can "look" over the shoulder of the FX 8350 and the third generation, achieves a considerable advantage about it. In other words, it took ten years and three generations of the next processor to overcome an FX. This proves that the tests done with the Intel processors of the past generations against FX, were false and full of prejudices against them. The tests are there to prove it now.

FX-6300 is a 6-core CPU with 6MB L2 and 8MB L3A cache. The issues with FX-6300 will not be represent in this benchmark, or at least they're unnoticeable. Clearly FX have much more spec than i3 and thus the comparison wasn't fair enough. i3 is dual core CPU and each core have two threads. When talking about multi-core performance, FX has clearly much benefit over i3. When i3 won single core benchmark, it was clear that FX cores aren't good enough or like i3. And this is the exact time, several issues related with FX, show up. To be fair, i3 perform quite better (not the best) but able to manage FX. So the price is fair for Intel.

If u have 2 integer units and 1 fpu, then u cant present them as "cores", because when u say cores, u are mentioning that they are independent, which is not the case here. Btw, with Ryzen they are still using SMT, u are not saying that Ryzen 5 1600X has 12 cores, right?

RA Tech Well, in this very same article it says "...a significant majority interpret ‘core’ in ways that are fully consistent with AMD’s chips...", as i said each fpu unit should be completely dedidicated to each integer unit, thus forming a real core. Amd wanted to play cheap (to save silicon area, reduce $$$, and advertise the fake cores) and they paid for that. Was AMD right? Nope. To be 100% honest they should have said "4 modules with upto 8x performance scaling". As u may know, any tech lawsuit that actually passes means that there was indeed something wrong with the company's practice. A $12M bill for AMD btw.
@RATechYT
@RATechYT 3 жыл бұрын
@@nikitazaycev8636 Well, not everyone who gets sent to jail is actually a criminal. The law doesn't always care whether you're right or not, and it's a similar situation here. Just so you know AMD didn't lose the lawsuit, they decided to settle out of court since they didn't want to waste their time and money proving the plaintiffs wrong, simple as that. Either way, FX processors have the exact amount of cores they're advertised at. An FX-8350 isn't a quad-core, which is what the plaintiffs claim, and it is absolutely wrong. You can say that they're weak or slower compared to Intel's cores, but saying that they don't actually have 8, 6 or 4 physical cores just because every 2 core in a module shares an FPU is simply misleading. There are plenty of processors that have completely different architecture designs, so there's no definition of a core. Console, smartphone and desktop 8 core processors have completely different designs and the performance difference can be massive jumping from one CPU to the other, yet that doesn't mean that the best performing 8 core is the real 8 core, while the other two are not.

без толку что вы разогнали hypertransport на 2.600, а CPU NB всего лишь 2200!!!Разгон не о чем !!!CPU nb нужно 2600-2800! Озу ddr3 2133-2400!! Вот это разгон будет!!!

Kinda sad seeing the AMD 3-core being just slightly faster than the cheaper and less powerhungry 2-core i3.

A place like this comparing two museum pieces like this means only one thing, or this is some weird sexual hardware fetiche channel, or this is a homeless guy that found those pieces in a trash dumpster, or a recycling center before they were ready to be disposed, and it will have the same fate of the FX CPU'S, that is the total oblivion! For christ sake let's go back to 2012 when i took my FX chip and compare them properly at least, the intel competitor has 2 cores only, wich make it more plausible to compare it with an "2011" FX-4100 bulldozer chip, or the FX 4300, but not the FX 6300, that was brought to compete with the i5's and not the i3's!!!!

They both released in 2012, and you could build a PC using either of these processors for an identical price. You don't compare the cylinder count or the amount of horsepower different cars have when you want to buy one. You look at the price.

@@RATechYT amd made it cheaper after, because the cpu performance in general was awful, they even changed the cpu metal box to a paperboard one. And it isn't a car, it's a computing chip that get's outdated every 2 years or so! They also released the FX 8370 in 2014, but if you look in the processor heatspreader, you'll see the real date of the cpu chip, that it is 2011: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eoquhJaHaMyhaKs

@@me_and_me_ That's right, first AMD released Bulldozer (2011), then they improved things with Piledriver (2012) by lowering the price and increasing clock speeds. Why would I use an older CPU for this comparison? I'd understand your argument if I used an i3-2120 since it released in 2011, but that's not the case here. The Ryzen 5 3400G got launched in 2019, though it says 2016 on the IHS, so I'm not sure what you're trying to prove here.

@@RATechYT prove what? what do i have to prove? the cpu was so bad that it almost took the manufacturer to complete bankruptcy, they got sued because of this FX disaster, and they lost, what exactly do i need to prove here? From 2011 to 2017 they got stuck on a 32 nm chip! Where the heck do you live? And why are you speaking english, to who speak english in US, UK and so on?
