Tech, I'm glad you were singing the praises of the 1080 Ti 8700K build because many people out there, teens and students especially, that'd kill to own a Gaming PC that powerful. Still a weapon for 1080p Gaming and surprisingly capable of lighter photo and video editing workloads. I think most of us in this space get caught up in the trap of upgrading every cycle, I know I did when going from my 6900 XT to my 7900 XTX, and before that with my 3080 to the 6900 XT, and before that with my 2080 Ti to the 3080. If you've got the previous generation flagship, it's almost always hovering around the higher end of the current mid-range (or thereabouts). Collectively we should be telling people that if it isn't economically viable to do so then a Gaming PC upgrade isn't necessary if what you have is still doing what you want it to do!

still a weapon for 1080p, what the hell are you talking about I'm getting 100 + fps on many games in 2k resolution (Ghost of Tsushima DC), and can play also in 4k if I Want, because I did before I changed it to 2k because one of the few of the only unoptimized game out there darktide

Upgraded from an 8700k last year to a 13700k. It was a great cpu, best during its time. But now I wouldn’t recommend 6 cores in 2024

@@mikeramos91 The 3070 is still decent. Only drawback is the 8GB of vram, but that depends on what kinds of games you play. Personally I wouldn't upgrade to anything less than a 4080 if I were in your shoes.

Depends what you play and resolution. Some online games will scale with gpu vram. I find I use 5-7gb vram 1440P in WoW, not sure how much I use in BG3 or Avatar since I never monitored it. Could check your usage in afterburner or fraps though, if it's not an issue could wait, certainly those new supers next month will shake things up somewhat. I don't use as much vram as I thought but game selection and resolution would determine how much you need. Am finding 7800XT & 7900XTX plenty, never ran out of vram on 3060 12gb either but I can't say I checked Starfield or recent games to see how much I was using. You might be able to hold out.@@mikeramos91

Still using my 8700k with a 3080. Great pair with most games utilizing all the gpu. Just now started saving some money and sometime next year I'll buy a new pc. My wife will then get this one - she uses my old i7-970 with a 980ti. That's how long machines are used in our household 😁

I have a 8700k/2080Ti/32Gb/AsusMaximusCode/850wEvga on my closet collecting dust since Jan of 2023 made a new high end 4090/13900k/Y40/64Gb/1200wTT Build. Someday would swap the case and sell it cheap to a friend since the case is Old 2011 Thermaltake Level 10

I migrated most of the sensitive data after the security leaks/concerns last year to 12th gen. I think casually the older machines might be fine. To be super safe you'd have to use offline also. Honestly think an AM5 or cheap 12th-14th gen build would be enough to be secure, do more if gaming or wanting it to last longer. Spectre/Meltdown exist, It depends how much money migration is worth cost vs benefit. I see it's probably okay to use the old machines for casual content, just not sensitive data online. They are at a higher risk and are slower. Upgrade when you can afford to.

I have pretty much the same build. should I upgrade to AM4 or AM5 or should I upgrade my gpu first? I initially built this pc for gaming but it mostly gets used for CAD. coding, and VMs and the only game I play is mordhau which my pc is is currently more than capable of playing that game at 1440p

AM5, don't consider less as that platform is ending now, wouldn't bother with a gpu upgrade at all, just do a whole new build, am5 with 12-16 cores, ddr5 ram, gpu can be a 30-40 series or an amd equivalent, the gpu won't matter too much in your use case but the cpu core count and IPC increases will.
@mikeramos91
@mikeramos91 Жыл бұрын
At this point just go am5 with at least double the cores
@dianaalyssa8726

Likely AM5 for the VMs. You might be spending almost as much to AM4, at this point would wait and do AM5.

i completely forgot about security reasons for upgrading, there's that new exploit going around where a malicious actor can embed malicious code into your motherboards boot picture. its crazy what people can do nowadays.

upgraded my 1080 ti to a 4070 last year, and next month I will be upgrading my 8700 to the 7800x3d. It was a great combo for several years, but its time and I cant wait!

I was on a 9700 and 2060 and my fps was super slow on VR chat in heavy populated places. Upgrade to 4060ti 16gb 😅 (same price as 3060ti..) and still suffered fsp... then upgraded to 13500 because was a massive generational leap and now plays everything fine. Sadly processor couldnt keep up 😔 problem is i only wanted to upgrade one part but ended up replacing my entire system!!!😢

Well, since my 13700K is likely dissolving inside my PC, I resurrected my 8700K, DDR4 memory, motherboard, and boot drive into a new case, PSU, cooler, and fans. And added my 3080ti. After everything updated, it's working great and will be ready when my CPU inevitably dies. It's a shame Intel can't make a CPU as good as the 8700K anymore.

I had my 8700k then 8086k (I knew a engineer at Intel) and ran that all the way up to a 3080 Ti before finally grabbing a 7800X3D and 4090. It is a big difference, but it's also not, especially on ROI. Although I flip my hardware to friends. 8086k lives on as a private dedicated game server. At least until the new replacement for the 7800X3D drops. I'll give my buddy the X3D in exchange for his 7700/mobo, which will be the new server chip and the 8086k will become a laughably overkill ChromeOS machine for me mum 😂
