We are making much ado about rafale, mig-29 or f-22 shooting down ballons at 5500 feet, but what the entire nation forgets is iaf had an aircraft called mig-25 which iaf acknowledged only after it's retirement which used to routinely fly over pakistan at an height of 65000 to 85000 feet including its capital islamabad for reconnaissance right from the early 1980's to late 1990's with pakistani establishment (government/military) looking helplessly over this routine overflight over pakistani airspace.

1. For @sigma-sigma1. You need to study the MiG-25 a bit. It did not carry weapons at all-its engine was not capable of relight after flaming out at altitude post missile-exhaust ingestion at altitude. Firing an AAM without flaming out at ~55,000' is quite an achievement. The fact that it is twin-engined makes a considerable difference. An IR/heat seeking missile carrying ac is best suited to down a balloon WVR.

I have clearly mentioned it as for reconnaissance, the mig-25 iaf had was mig-25R but there are armed versions which airforce like soviet and iraqi airforce had which had very high combat ceiling.

In 1991 gulf war between allied forces and iraqi armed forces, the iraqi mig-25 was the only aircraft from iraqi side to achieve an air to air kill against allied airforce which shot down an us Navy f-18 hornet because f-18 could not hit mig-25 because of higher flight ceiling whereas iraqi mig-25 was able to achieve that kill.

Rafale is good, but we need more of them ( or similar jets) With 36 Rafale, I don't think we have any advantage over China . MRFA must be our priority but with budget constraints we can't afford 114 Rafale but with 3-4 squadrons of Rafale plus force multipliers we may have better condition. I heard government is looking for more 50-60 licence production of SU-30 MKI?

1. The altitude of the balloon was higher than the highest possible altitude achievable by Tejas 2. Tejas is currently deployed in South India. So, it doesn't make sense to use Tejas.

They are always observing and the military always acts as if the enemy is always watching. The thing you say about getting a radar signature doesn't apply for a 4.5 generation jet like Rafael. Fifth gen jets like F-22, and F-35 and maybe even J-20 might carry a lumenburg lens so that Enemy never gets the actual RCS and signature and other details.
