Gamenate - After stabbing you opponent to the rear, you sword is in his body, right? So you must be incredibly strong to raise the kissaki up and to the left as you begin to turn 😳💪🏽 So keep the kissaki exactly where it is as you turn, applying hiki nuki with you hip rotation, and keep the sword in the midline (not out to the left) with a feeling of ‘wiping your brow’ with you left forearm as you turn around. Don’t separate your left index finger from your nakayubi as you perform noto!

Hello, I am also a member of the All Japan Kendo Federation, practicing Seitei Iai. We must have started at a similar time, I have also practiced 7 years, working on my 8th! Thank you for sharing your video, it gave me some things to work on as well. "...my sensei has corrected me on this many times..." yes, I know this feeling!!!! I am still working on many things. Lately, I have been trying not to shift my weight so much when I step/switch feet, but I still need to improve. My sensei will sometimes film us practicing together, and send it to us to watch. It is embarrassing to watch my mistakes, but it does help. Thank you again for sharing, let's keep training hard!

I know for myself (not a student of iaido yet, but having practiced several martial arts) so often I know what things should look like even when I am (as of yet) unable to execute correctly. Being able to look at yourself and be accountable to where you have errors - looking for reasons and not making excuses - is a remarkable skill. がんばって!

Shogo. Your thoughts on what I would describe as a response to the famous Japanese proverb? "A nail that stands is hammered down." But not all fasteners are nails to be hammered down. Some are screws, some are bolts, some are pegs. If the same tool is used, the wood gets wrecked.

these two videos are really nice since the Iaido style is one that grabbed my attention the most but living in the states there's no sword school so mine is all self-taught but now I can practice the actual kata after seeing and hearing how they're supposed to be done correctly since I found your channel

Focusing on principals always helps. ie; hands push, feet pull. If you push off you'll lose balance. Better to place your foot and draw your weight to that foot. There from old Koryu schools.

Thanks for sharing shogo ! You are most humble to showcast your own mistakes :) one thing I learned from filming myself with just one camera in front of me, is that you can tell whether the kissaki is low or not by looking at your hands. If the left hand is higher than the right then the kissaki has gone lower than the tsuba. Hope that helps ^_^

Sanpogiri - Although the teki to the front is the major threat, you must look at the first enemy your about cut to you right. Your metsuke is a little too short. Since this first cut is nukiuchi rather than nukitsuke, it must be strong. This is achieved by drawing the sword almost vertically and cutting down to kill you enemy. Also speed it up a bit. the other teki aren’t going to hang around for you to despatch his colleagues!

Nice Shogo! I think in katas like Soete Tsuki it is really important to try it with a partner to feel the distance since if we pull the leg back too soon in the first cut we will basically not cut anything ^^", also with the regular cuts, a partner with a stick hanging in front will be great because of ki-ken-tai-ichi, meaning - in the video it feels like your body and legs are moving way ahead of your sword, neglecting ki-ken-tai-ichi. but Iaido is a never-ending journey haha, hope to see you next year in the Munich competition :D

@@LetsaskShogoThankyou for your response! I started to train in iaido about 2 years ago and a absolutely love it! I have a wonderful instructor who received her 4th dan this spring. There are 2 other students in my class. There is so much to learn! Occassionally we go to our sister school in New York City to receive extra instruction. Iaido is a truly beautiful and powerful art. I consider it a real privilege to have have access to such excellent instruction and to immerse myself in the truly beautiful culture it represents. It generates my highest regard for Japsnese culture and traditions. Thankyou for sharing your iaido journey with us!

In my short experience, when the vertical cuts are lower than parallel to the floor, most of the time we have to check our grip or if our left hand is going down enough to te right position while we cut. Sometimes, when it gets there but a bit to late, the sword goes a little down and bounces. Either way, your Iaido looks find. Keep working on it.

Very cool video! I started to practice Iaido (and Kendo) about 7-8 months ago here in Spain. Have to ask, you execute a noto with the blade pointing upwards, while we always sheathe with the blade pointing outwards and parallel to the floor, rotating both saya and sword when about 2/3 of the blade is inside the saya, so It ends up vertically oriented as you do. What about this difference? Is there a more correct way of doing it?

I've seen that on your down thrust you're put to much strength on your right hand and the blade keeps going to the right need to relax your right hand a bit on that downwards thrust. But all and all a very nice display of sword work 👍.

It’s easy to forget when we train that we are training to defend our lives. Whenever doing a kata one must ask oneself would that hurt a grown man if he was he was coming at me? 90% of the time we know what the outcome would be. Strike the finishing blow not swing a stick around and fight with imaginary bad guys
