Hi Iain, That was one of the best quick demos I’ve ever seen. Your camera work and post narration really kept things concise and on point. I hope you start making videos like this more often. Thanks, Bill J.

I'm now the proud owner of this piece. The video, and even print version in Watercolor Artist magazine doesn't do it justice. In hand, it's really incredibly beautiful; can't wait to get it on he wall. Thanks Iain.

Excellent video showing the build up of detail and darks. Loved the way the cars faded out in the foreground, and yet so much detail. Thank you :)

wonderful skills. I like the way you take a hard subject like a car and soften it so that it doesn't dominate the picture. The backlighting of the people is a revelation.

There's a lot of these wet-in-wet painters and what's interesting is their fundamental understanding of the nature of watercolour. Sedimentary, Staining and None-staining etc. It would be good if one of them produced a video to help people on this as it is integral to this style. (sorry if someone already has)

Tony Swaby Tony- I rarely use staining colors as I do a lot of lifting. Granulation is tricky on this surface; but I know I can get it with F. Ult and anything I mix with it. Esp. Light red. The major thing most people don't understand is "when" to work wet in wet and judging how much water is on your brush in comparison with the paper. There's a very small window of time when everything is just right. My suggestion is that you practice on scrap paper. Lay in a wash, allow it to dry about 30 seconds and then add a much stronger pigment that is slightly dryer than what you are using. From there it's purely experimentation. The thing I find most beginners doing incorrectly is doing the practice on something that matters. i.e. an actual painting. If you consistently ruin something you've taken time to draw you will be less likely to experiment. Hope that helps.

Enjoyed this much more so. Your dialogue is very helpful. I request that on a future video you explain your color choices. The palette you select is not apparent in the reference photo, so you must have had some rationale for selecting the colors that you do. Thanks again.

Mike Porter Hello Mike- this was a video done as a companion piece for an article in Watercolor Artist where I did explain a bit more about my color choices. Also I have a new set of DVD's out with Artists Network where I go in to that in much more detail. My main goal is value, then I think of things in terms of warm and cool hues.

Hi Iain. LOVE your style and work. I paint loose like you. However i'd never match your extreme talent! I view your website almost daily! Just to study your great detailed work. Your Scottish scenes relate to me more as i'm from Ireland. Patients is key, and i tend to go into a wash before its dry. I suppose you must know when to and not to do this....i think one word would sum up getting to where your at: DEDICATION!! Keep it up.

Love watching you paint and I really understand how important a good brush is. It seems to me that you are using the same brush with an amazing point. Can you tell me what brush make, type and size you are using. I can't tell how large your painting is but I imagine it looks like a 11 x 14 in?

Brian Marshall Stillman & Birn Beta series. Approx 140lb hot press. It behaves differently than hot press. I have much more time to muddle colors on the paper as the sizing allows the color to sit on the surface longer. Cheers.

Gorgeous watercolor!! Your style reminds me of other watercolor artists I admire: old school Sargent Venice scenes, and recently Thomas Schaller /workszoom/1448729/grand-central-nyc>. All urban scenes. Question: I see you are working from top to bottom with a well controlled slow moving liquid edge, what angle are you working at? My guess it's a shallow one. Thanks. Jerry Bieber
