There’s something about making a shelter in extreme weather and getting out of the elements. Even watching you do that is satisfying So I can only imagine how it would feel to actually do that. I’m with the other gentleman who would prefer a small cabin and the fireplace but I love watching your videos. Thank you!

My brother and I used to build snow shelters like this in our backyard in Southwest Missouri in the late 1970's. The winters were colder and we got a lot more snow in those days. I always get the summertime blues when it gets really hot and humid like today but like they said in Game of Thrones "winter is coming."
@mustafaiq12 жыл бұрын
We get very hot summer's here in Iraq too, but GOT fans started the quotes already as they say we're expecting a pretty cold winter. Hope it snows, last one was 18yrs ago.

Kkkk South of Brazil: Spring has just arrived...so, the temp dropped, and rain started pouring... our soil is not soft and sandy as yours. When it rains in winter we have cold and muddy soil... We'd rather stay indoors, if we could! When it doesn't rain, we have frost, which is cold and wet. That's why we love all the other seasons, but winter... (of course I speak only for myself...)

We had a freak winter storm in the Netherlands many years ago, reached -20C and was lots of snow. I convinced 2 other friends to help me shovel snow into a huge pile and then carved out a hole. Next day 2 more tagged along because they couldn't believe what we had done... was storm outside, but cozy inside. 3rd day storm was over and the iglo had yellow snow on the inside... some local dog no doubt haha

I have done this in northern Minnesota it was a little bit bigger shelter and the inside was built out of snow blocks like an igloo we had as kids in the early seventies a K-tel ice block maker ..it would make a snow block push it down pack it in and then turn it over and hand handle on the other side and out would slide your block we spent all week building this igloo then spent the weekend in it it snowed on us the second night but it wasn't a blizzard but we got a good 8 inches of snow overnight and had to kind of dig out the next morning all in all it was pretty fun

I did the Exact same thing once. Only snow didn't seem safe or sturdy so I used wood. The wood wasn't very warm so I insulated it with fiberglass. Then I didn't want to be breathing in the fibers so I covered it with some drywall. I was afraid the wood would get wet, so I put some vinyl on the sides and some felt paper and asphalt shingles on the top. Candle lanterns seemed like a waste of money so I just had some electric run to the shelter. It was still a bit chilly in the colder months, so I put in a 330 gallon propane tank and a furnace. Good times.

Great job on the quinzee. I would highly recommend a complete set of clothing as the build is quite exhaustive, the fire options limited. Having built one myself, I added a pre-fab 12x1''' porthole made from frozen demineralized water for luminosity. BTW, those candeliers are a great find.

Been a while since I've made a quinzhee! Great tip I learned watching an old tv show years ago about making them was cutting a bunch of small sticks about 1/4" to 1/2" thickness in diameter and you cut each of them to the same length as the thickness you want for your walls to be (say 8"-12"). Once you made your pile of snow and packed it all, you push these sticks into the snow pile flush all over pointing towards the "centre" of the pile. As you start to dig out your quinzhee, if you hit a stick along the way you start digging in a new direction and you won't accidently break though your walls and you ensure a good thickness to the wall as well. Cheers!

I have watched hundreds of great outdoor camping video’s in the winter, before, during, and after a winter storm, I watched them build shelters, campfires, beds etc. but what I have never seen is anyone build a latrine (toilet). They don’t have to demonstrate using it, but at else show that you have one, or some new modern day method designed for camping. No one can go three days camping without relieving themselves, its part of life, human nature, nothing to be shamed about.
