Manu S. Pillai is an Indian writer and popular historian. Known for his works on the Travancore monarchy and the history of Princely India, he is most famous for his debut book, The Ivory Throne, which is about Rani Sethu Lakshmi Bhay's reign as the Regent of Travancore.
Manu S. Pillai was born in Mavelikkara, Kerala in 1990. He grew up in Pune. He got his bachelor's degree in economics from Fergusson College, Pune. He got a master's degree in international relations from King's College London. Following his education, he worked with the Parliamentary office of Shashi Tharoor in New Delhi and Lord Karan Bilimoria in London. He also worked as a researcher on the BBC Series, Incarnations with Sunil Khilnani, which tells the story of India through fifty great lives. In 2017, he became a full-time historian and writer.
Pillai is known for his debut non-fiction The Ivory Throne: Chronicles of the House of Travancore for which he won the Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar in 2017.The story is expected to be adapted into a web series by Arka Mediaworks. Rebel Sultans, Pillai's second work, narrates the story of the Deccan from the close of the thirteenth century to the dawn of the eighteenth century. He has released two more books since, The Courtesan, the Mahatma and the Italian Brahmin and False Allies: India's Maharajas in the Age of Ravi Varma.
In this two part series Manu S Pillai talks about his personal and professional journey. He talks about his grandparents and how their relationship shaped his worldview. He talks about his childhood and what it was growing up with very strong women around him. Manu S Pillai speaks about his process of creation of his work and why he chose Ivory Throne as his first book.
In part 2 you hear his thoughts on various subjects including the caste system. He talks about his experience working with Shashi Tharoor and how he was influenced by Shashi Tharoor.

Some social media channels like this one are doing excellent work where our mainstream channels could have done better. Many gems of personalities are in our society, not coming to the surface mainly because of the overemphasis on cinema and related arts. Dhanya Varma is doing excellent work, and there is much to do. This kind of programme should reach more people, youngsters, parents, and teachers .. Knowledge shouldn't be jailed in the pages of textbooks. We should hear from masters about their thoughts, experiences, and mistakes. This is one of my favourite interview channels because of the quality of questions that motivate the guest to open the train of thoughts so freely that we listeners don't feel disconnected.
