Rick Sammon often says "Light illuminates, shadows define." I find that really helps me, and it goes well with the back lighting challenge you had early in the video. You really have a great knack for making concepts very practical. Nicely done!

I am amazed that this channel doesn't have more subs. It's so useful! This subtraction idea is something I've been trying to work on recently. One place I find it really difficult is in a forest scene. I do a lot of hiking and I often find it really hard to make an image that I see in my mind because of all of the clutter in the woods. Loved that black and white image of the cove. I almost always have my X-T3 in a BNW simulations for shooting. I like seeing the scene that way. Thanks for taking us along and for all of the tips! Have a great weekend.

Regarding the watch vs subscribe thing, I think I subscribed a bit over a year ago, even though I’m not a big fan of landscape photography and I shoot on film exclusively. I subscribed because I find your approach/ delivery very pleasant, not too “preachy”, and your advice is really good in that the same techniques apply to almost any type of photography. With so many new photographers just beginning their journeys, they’ll do well to take your information to heart. Cheers!

I really enjoyed this video. I struggle with composition and specifically spending enough rime to truly set up the best shot I can get from a scene. However, videos like this one are excellent for showing the how and why of setting these shots up properly. I am getting more patient and doing better thanks to you and others sharing information & knowledge, thank you. And that B&W pano was spectacular!

Great video again. Thanks. Especially for sharing a photo that you weren't happy with; the first one of the cottage. It's SO valuable when professionals like yourself share such images, because I immediately recognized the weaknesses of some of my own photos in it; the flat uniform light, the uninteresting sky. It's very affirming to see that, well, how can I put it, ... even a photographer as great as you are is not going to be able to make much out of such a scene at such a time of day with that kind of light. I hear too many KZbinrs telling me that there's ALWAYS a shot to get, and if I'm not getting it, then I'm not trying hard enough or I lack the knowledge or skill to capture it or edit it into shape later. Thanks for so simply demonstrating "Yeah, this isn't going to work. Look at this unsatisfying result. There's really nothing more for it."

Great video. The eye/ brain combination is surely the most important equipment a photographer has. As you say to simplify to the essentials. But also to see all potential photos in a scene, even an initially mundane view and then simplifying each one out into a good photo. Excellent

There's also a skill in mastering the opposite of all the topics that you discussed in your video, Ian - making a crowded, messy scene look good for example. A good approach is to remember that pretty much everything is possible in Photography.

Another really solid video. Like many of us, I have a pretty solid understanding of the technical aspects of photography, but composition continues to be the biggest challenge. I like your step back/zoom in tip. Going to give that a try. Also compisition by subtraction is a different thought process. I usually look at a scene and ask myself what I want to add to my photo. I’m going to give that new thought process a try as well. All the best Ian!

Hi ian. A very interesting walk and shoot. I would like to tell you about what I take in my bag. Cardboard borders for picture frames .of various sizes. I find this can help with selecting the components to be in the images I take. Just hold the frame in front of your eyes and look around. Moving around to help cut out unwanted items within your chosen composition saved a bit of time fluffing about looking thru the camera. Then swapping lenses. Regards David

I had the same thought a few days ago. Make a 4:3 cardboard cutout and use it to assess a composition before setting up my camera. You've inspired me to do it! 👍

A question. Why did you not take the image of the stream and white cottage at the end? For me a composition should work with or without decent light. I do a lot of scouting in poor light and find I get much better compositions as I am not distracted by the light.

Very helpful video about an aspect where i still have a lot to work. Getting a picture in my head simplified so that it works as Photo is really tough. To select and reduce the Scene to its pure basic orten gets me confused and i need 2 or 3 trys to find a way.
