Is the CME Widi Master wireless bluetooth midi worth buying?

Thank you so much for creating this excellent and clear video! We are currently working on an improved version of the WIDI app for both iOS and Android. Besides improved stability It will add a new feature called "group connectivity" which will allow 1-to-4 bidirectional communication in a group of WIDI devices. It will add a few other improvements to the firmware that improves performance and makes it better adjustable to the needs of the musician, like jitter optimisation (sequencers) and latency optimisation (keys) settings depending on your specific use case. @@ToyeJohnson Hello. I just bought an AX Edge and two Widi Masters. Out of the box it worked flawlessly with my Korg KRONOS which has the midi channel from factory set to channel 1. It was really plug and play. It works exactly as if it were a cable but without the hassle of the cable hangin around. Nice gizmo!

@@ToyeJohnson Hello. Yes you need to buy 2 sets of Widi Masters in order to control a keyboard. The reason is widi master needs power from the MIDI OUT port of the devices. The MIDI IN of any device has no power. So you need to connect two complete sets of widi masters(midi in and out) on each device(controller and controlled). TG they are not that expensive.

If I have 2-3 synth and want to connect computer DAW to send MIDI will it work? Or If I connect synth and connect others via MIDI though will it pass multiple midi channels?

renderman.pro If your synths have midi usb port you can connect them directly to your computer (all at the same time). If you want a wireless connection then you could use a Widi master if your synth has both midi din in and out sockets. The Widi master uses both in and out sockets so your synth would need a midi thru socket to send data to a second synth. The Widi master supports 16 midi channels so yes you could pass multiple midi channels.

Thank you so much for this video and the information. I have one question though: If the WIDI Master can only be powered through the MIDI OUT, how would I pair two WIDI Masters (one for the controller and the other for the receiver)? It doesn't make much sense that both of the WIDIs are connected to the OUTs, right? 🤔 Besides, what I would like to do is to connect a Ground Control Pro (GCP MIDI foot controller) to 2 HEX Audio Switcher units (one of them being the receiver). To my understanding, the two HEX units should be connected in series: OUT of the first unit into the IN of the second unit, right? So the whole chain would have to be: GCP MIDI OUT > First HEX MIDI IN > First HEX MIDI OUT > Second HEX MIDI IN. In this scenario, how can I substitute the standard MIDI cable that goes from GCP MIDI OUT into the First HEX MIDI IN with (one or two) WIDI Master? 🤔

@karimgurrola6472 I'm glad you found my video helpful 😀👍 Okay, so, the standard midi din socket setup provides power only on the midi din out socket. So on a midi device that you only want to sent midi out from, you only need to plug in the widi master main adapter into the midi din out socket. On any midi device you want to receive midi in, you need both a midi din in and a midi din out socket (as midi din in sockets do not provide a power source to power the widi master). So for midi din in, plug the widi master main adapter into the midi din out socket and connect the widi master sub adapter to the main adapter and plug it into the midi din in socket. Unless you are also sending midi data out from the midi device, the main adapter in the midi din out socket is just using the power source of the socket to power the sub adapter. That all sounds more complicated than it really is though 🤔

Here's the chain I have to make: GCP (Controller) OUT > First HEX (First Receiver) IN > First HEX (First Receiver) OUT (This is the port that I need) > Second HEX (Second Receiver) IN Would this WIDI do the trick for me?

@karimgurrola6472 CME updated the Widi Master, so now you can use one Widi Master as a kind of midi hub. This way you plug a Widi Master into your GCP and set it as a midi hub, then plug a Widi Master into the first hex and another Widi Master into the second hex. Then connect both Widi Masters in the hexs to the Widi Master in the GCP. The GCP will then send Midi messages to both hexs. I assume the GCP is sending standard midi commands and you are currently using a standard midi thru setup.

Hey I just bought one of these and need help. I tried to plug in the main adapter to the keyboard then the sub adapter into my wireless keytar and I pressed a small button on the side which made both of them do a green color which I think means there no in sync but I’m still not able to control the synth with my keytar. What more do I need to do in order for it to work?

Matt Stewart Hi, you need to buy 2 Widi Masters. The sub only works when plugged into the main, so you need 2 main adapters. @@cokomairena True, but I think they should have another option to sell these as a pair for those who don't have any WIDI's at all. As Priyal de Zoysa said, there is some confusion to the beginner who is looking into this kind of midi system and I can't be the only one who thought that buying a WIDI Master package that included a main and sub adapter means that you're only half way connected and must purchase another package to actually make the connection on the secondary piece of gear to create the wireless connection. At face value and without researching it, I was under the first impression that purchasing one package of WIDI Master (including two parts) meant that one plug was essentially the transmitter and the other part was the receiver. Quite misleading and confusing, I must say. I think it would be a great idea for the company to offer a pair, so you're off to the races for the beginner who doesn't own any WIDI's yet...and of course, still have the option to buy the single master/sub unit for those who just need a single unit. Odd marketing, I must say. Even on the big box store music site, such as Sweetwater, the description is vague and makes no mention that two packages must be bought (at $59 a piece, mind you) to make a midi connection. Additionally, even the reviews go on to say how things are vague or confusing. Seems like a nice gadget, though.

Самер Баша If the Yamaha has Midi Din sockets then yes, you can plug a Widi Master (main and sub adapter) into the Yamaha Midi Din sockets and a second Widi Master (main adapter) into the Vortex Midi Din socket. The 2 Widi Masters will auto pair and the Vortex will control the Yamaha the same way it would as if it was connected by a Midi Din cable.

Stefano Izzo (Steve) Hi, assuming the midi din out on both devices are standard (provide a power source on the midi din Out), you will need 2 Widi masters. Each Widi master is a pack of 1 main adapter and 1 sub adapter. Plug one Widi master main adapter into the midi din out of the KX5 and plug the other Widi master main adapter into the midi din Out of the modx8 (required to power the sub adapter) and plug the Widi master sub adapter into the midi din In of the modx8 and connect the sub adapter to the main adapter. Once connected up, you can turn on both devices and the 2 Widi Masters will automatically pair.

Telegraph Prod Hi, yes, if you want to connect a widi master to the Ax Edge built in Midi Bluetooth. I have personally spoken to CME about this issue (it applies to all Roland kit with Midi Bluetooth, not just the Ax Edge) and I have been assured they are working on an update to sort the issue out. Unlike most other makers of Midi Bluetooth kit Roland use a stricter version of the protocol. But, if you plug a widi master into the midi DIN out socket of the Ax Edge and another Widi Master into the midi DIN out socket and it's sub into the midi DIN in socket of a synth, you can autosync the two Widi Masters instead. So you don't need to wait for an update if you use 2 Widi Masters.
