Just got it today, and gotta say, i'm super satisfied with my choice. It was so easy and comforty to play with it, and i've never even touched a 7 or 8 string before in my life, just two hours of random practicing and i got the handle of it. I JUST LOVED THE GUITAR, I RECCOMAND IT TO EVERYBODY!!!!!

I did some research the Legator falls on it's Ass bad but it was a 7 string reveiw and the dude fogged it bad. He said he has the potential when you have to put all kinds of money and adjustments to it brand new. He had to shim neck, Adjust rods, do an Intunation, and Something else. He said he was really disappointed on the Legator for the price. He said way over priced for the adjustments and tweaks. Agile pretty much same but he said for price and some tweaks he said he was able to turn it into a solid ax. The Jackson and Ibanez were the best and he said Ibanez had the least amount of tweaks to it brand new. He said the Jackson was little ruff at first but when he dialed it in he said it was a beast. This was same dude on all reveiws with focus on 1guitar per video. Pretty Much the Ibanez and Jackson was the best out of those 4. I didn't see him do schecktor I think. I know on different video between Ibanez and Schecktor. He said he like the Ibanez wizard necks better but like the rhythm tone on Schecktor more. I have been watching them alot cause my next ax is 8 string multi scale and I was pumped about the Legator but it's was getting dogged. To their Defense I haven't seen the Legator 8 string ghost multi scale reveiw I am interested in. They could of worked the bugs out like I said it was a 7 string multi scale Legator and It was a review from about year and half ago. I want to see what Ola's Solar 8 string us like as well. It seems solid and has an Everytime bridge with locking machine heads as well. Plus it looks like a Beasty AX. I've been pretty much IBANEZ, ESP, JACKSON , my top 3 but want to check out Solar and Legator for myself. I am biased towards the Ibanez wizard necks plus they are coming out with those new active pickups in them that sound kick-ass. I am sure I'll be getting an IBANEZ when it's all said and done. It's to sketchy for me to order a Legator for that money and all the shit dude had to put into it just to get it going right. Well hope that helped you lil bub. I've been doing my research on the 8 strings and take it for what it's worth I'm little Ibanez biased due to wizard necks.

EMG's were originally made for jazz, but were adopted by metal players. the pick-ups are still the same so they're good for both. not just metal

@ForViewingOnly My Tipp: Get one and let a local Luthier put in Fretmarkers like on a Strandberg Boden. They are the best for seeing where you are. Shouldn't cost a lot. Planning on doing that on mine too.

Very nice review, thanks! I really think that's the way to go, fanned frets, its the most logical evolution. Im just curious about how it actually feels in the hand, and doing trickier chord positions, or even simple power chords in the top. And of course you can play jazz with this! Hear that tone at 10:30, just nice and warm. I had an emg 808 loaded guitar and played lots of bossa nova and jazzy stuff, very detailed and warm with lots of presence. Actually i kind of miss that big sound of the 808's, i have now the Sentient and Pegasus pups, and although i really love them for their versatility and more classic "paf-like" tone, i kind of miss the 808's tone and power sometimes. The dynamics of passives really brings more versatile, "feeling" and classic "hazyness", but still one can get great clean tone out of active or "metal orientated" pickups. I mean, if Mike Stern or Bill Frisell play jazz with a Telecaster and Allan Holdsworth with only a bridge pickup... With what guitar can you not play jazz and get an interesting tone? Would be fun to see some great jazz guitarist playing a pointy metal basswood 8 string guitar with the hottest bridge active pickup available and really nailing some jazzy goodness.

Regarding the complaint about the nut height: Manufacturers usually make the hight to be a little higher than necessary so that it can be adjusted to the user's taste without swapping it

"EMGs which are not that liked by the community" Actually, the EMG X pickups are being incredibly well-received, in my experience, especially compared to the regular EMG pickups. From your demo, I can say they sound incredible. I installed a Seymour Duncan Nazgul in my plain-jane RG8 and I wish it sounded this tight!

Great review, thanks for sharing. I played a few Ibanez 8 strings and was going to buy one. I just didn't like the active pickups or the action on them (too much string buzz - maybe the guitars weren't set up properly) so ended up buying a Schecter Omen 8 and love it. The only thing I don't like about the Schecter Omen 8 is that you can't use heavier gauge strings than what it comes with (they just won't go through the tuning key). I'm not sure about Ibanez though...

Through a compressor and an eq in the mix and you could play awesome jazz on that guitar. I love that guitar it looks amazing with the open grain ash body, I think an ebony fingerboard would look great on it as well. Nice video.

+Jiri Masin These are the EMG 909 X series, which has a different preamp than a traditional EMG 81/85/707, etc. design. They use a longer pickup(these are 9 string pickups) because at that angle the 8 string design might come up a little short. IMO these are outstanding pickups and I wouldn't bother spending the money to put passives in(especially overpriced Bareknuckles) these do a good job of finding the middle ground between the passive and active sound. Now only if Ibanez would get their head out of their ass and make sure any guitar they offer above let's say, 700$ came with locking tuners stock....

Bernd: The 10:30 mark is what "makes the point". Every single 8 string and 10 string guitar demo film up on You Tube is by someone who plays heavily distorted "metal" (music ?) and plays from the low string to the high string and it is always the same note. There is not a single change of pitch in their distorted sound. The 10:30 mark PROVES the point that a dark smooth, jazz guitar sound can be acquired from this excellent and inexpensive instrument...by simply turning down the volume VERY low, turning the tone knobs down, possible turning off the bridge pick up, for only a neck pick jazz guitar sound and......most importantly using 10 or 11 gauge flat wound strings. And after all of the above, all we need to do is use a Boss GT - 001 Effects Processor and get that very, very soft, smooth jazz guitar sound like Johnny Smith and Joe Pass. :) Is all of the above....correct ? Thank you very much for proving a nice sound can come out of tis guitar. :). Antoine

is the 27 scale length enough for the lower string on a standard tuning to sound clear and not muffled like a bass? i've tried some 8 string guitars at local shops and the 8th string is too floppy or has little to no definition( note clarity) for a standard guage string set. I saw a 30 scale length one with good lower string note clarity but have yet to find a fanned version.

Wouldn't 30" to 25.5" fanning be way too radical? Agile has (or maybe had) a model with a 30" scale length, but with regular frets. The higher strings would probably be a pain.

Great review! I would buy one of these if it had fret markers. I've had guitars without fret markers and I'm more likely to make a mistake if I'm quickly jumping from one end of the fretboard to the other on a dark stage. Hopefully Ibanez will sort this out in 2017 with a prestige model... nothing fancy at the 12th fret please Ibanez... maybe similar markers to the SRFF805 bass.

+Ian Cuevas As the high E string has just the same tension as a strat, I would recommend using 0,011 strings and a thicker B-String for that. With the standard 09 set the guitar is pretty balanced.

Hey, can anyone tell me what pickups are there? Are those one's the emg 808x or 909x? The official ibanez site says that "EMG808X and EMG909X pickups fit the bill perfectly-not only in size, but also in sound". I am looking forward to buy a cheaper version the ibanez rgms8, and want to change pickups as soon as i buy it, but dont know for which size i should look for. Since it's multiscale, the 909X might fit better, cause of the angle, but still i dont know for sure, can i buy, for example, a standard seymour duncan blackouts, the 8 string version, and will they fit it well, or they gonna be too small

Great videos man! Do you think the low notes would be as defined as a M80M? I want a guitar I can tune in a drop F# tuning on an 8 string meaning my highest string would also be F# so wonder if this is a better option as they are similarly priced guitars. Also it's active vs passive pickups so debating which to get...

Congrats! Ordering it on Friday :D Due to the fan and the way it is slanted you need a larger pickup to ensure the pickups cover all the strings. So it has to be a larger 9 string pickup. They are EMG's 909x. I think it's made in Indonesia.

+Tomasz Gutka They are 9-string pickups, that's the case with all 8 string fanned fret guitars I've seen as far as I know. Kind of unfortunate since there's not as many aftermarket options out there just yet, but by the time I get a fanned fret 9 string guitar and have the money for new pickups, hopefully there will be some from Lundgren and/or Bare Knuckle(which BK does/did have the Canines which were 9 string pickups). I think he said TAM10 which is the much less expensive model, still spendy though. I really wanna get the Agile Pendulum Pro 92528, it's a fanned fret 9 string but uses 9 string pickups too, figure if I must get fanned fret and at least 8 string, may as well go 9 since they both use 9 string pickups lol(quarter inch wider neck though). And the Agile 9 string doesn't use EMG's, the passive Cepheus 10/11 bar pickups are probably better, they're $160 each where other Cepheus pickups are $80-100 and even those are on par with the EMG's. I'm thinking I'll tune it like an 8 string with a string higher actually, would be pretty amazing for djent and shred lol. Oh almost forgot, was also going to mention have you seen the GNG Shen or the Skervesen SkerveTEN? Multi-scale 10 strings, kind of extreme lol, but while the scale range of the SkerveTEN is 27" - 31" which would be great for 4 low strings, it's a bit much for me. The GNG Shen is 22.5" - 29.5" which would be amazing for tuning 2 lower and 2 higher strings, I think that's my ultimate dream guitar. The SkerveTEN is absolutely beautiful though, definitely looks better.

+Tomasz Gutka Oh, I think there is a way you could install 8 string pickups on it though with a modification, but the poles wouldn't quite line up right. Might still work okay though, something from Lundgren or Bare Knuckle even with poles not quite lining up right would probably still be better than the EMG 909's, I kinda doubt poles on the 9 string pickups line up right either but I guess maybe EMG's aren't designed with poles. The Agile Cepheus 10/11 pickups don't have poles though and would work as another option(not 100% sure dimensions are the same), it's hard to find anything about how they sound though but would probably be an upgrade over the EMG's. If the Kiesel FFs are also running from 800+ it will be a hard choice. And I wonder if, with the amount of budget fanns coming out, Bare Knuckle Pus will release some 9 String sized market models, considering 8 Strings wont fit neither in this nor (probably) the Kiesel and other affordable version (if thats what one wants to call Carvin / Kiesel)

+Matthias Ahlswede Bareknuckles does slanted pickups that fit any fan you have on a guitar. The problem is they are expensive. People complain that these "budget", or mass-produced, multiscale guitars have EMGs when EMGs are literally the cheapest option to keep costs as low as possible. They have a bar magnet already, so slanting them makes it no issue for multiscales. Having to make custom slanted pickups that fit the fan of every single guitar that they produce is not cost effective.

+TheKris7string Depends entirely on what you play. If you play much clean stuff, get the tam 10. If you tune down the low string a lot and mostly play heavy riffs, get the RGIF8.

so I am really on the fence between the 7 string version of this and the rgdix. I generally prefer passive pickups and the bevels, cut and finish on the rgdix are all beautiful. that being said, it's not fanned fret. I unfortunately don't have the ability to go play a fanned fret and never have before so I'm wondering, in terms of ease of playability, is there a noticeable difference? I like the look and sound of both guitars but it's really coming down to the fanned frets and what matters most to me is playability and longevity since I want this to be my main rig for a while. I've heard that this has nickel frets which tend to wear out quicker with heavier gauge strings. thoughts?? thank you for the excellent review and playing btw!!

fanned frets have a little adjustment period (like half an hour) but it's generally agreed that fanned frets are more comfortable than traditional frets. A guitarist in a band I played with had an agile 8 string and it was the best guitar I've ever had the chance to play

+Dylan Simon I actually got the rgif7 and I love it! playing it now haha. but yes it's very comfortable and the only thing that really threw me off was looking at the first couple of frets while playing but now it's a breeze! bars are a liiiitle bit harder on the lower part of the neck but it's nothing impossible, overall I love it!
