Hi! I was wondering if you had any tips for an HL literature paper 2 comparative essay on poetry? I'm not quite sure on how to structure my response in a way that would be most effective for balance and communication when referring to multiple poems in one essay 🥺

Will both of your works be poetry? Many ways to organize a P2 in all cases and it depends on the question. With poetry, you need to tackle 2-3 poems by each poet so I’d focus on one in a body paragraph and COMPARE it with a poem from my other poet and have a rich comparative idea that helps me answer the question. If the other work is not poetry that is fine. Just find a moment in the novel/drama and compare with the poem. Then go to another comparative point and use ANOTHER POEM to compare to the other text. And so on. Hope this makes sense.

@@ibenglishguys Thank you so much for replying! Both of my works are poetry so I was wondering if you meant comparing 2 poems (1 from each poet) in the same body paragraph using the comparative idea? And building upon that with the first paragraph having similarities between the two and a second paragraph being a comparison?

I always thought that "interpretation" was analysis of the deeper meaning and "implications" was impact/effect on the audience and tie back to thesis.

Implications are listed in Criterion A so this goes more with interpretation. We see it as reading between the lines and looking for subtext.

Would we put these implications in the intro and conclusion or also in the body paragraphs and if so how would we fit it in if it doesn’t match the thesis

Implications are frequently used in the body paragraphs as you discuss the text. Of course, there might be a chance to refer to implications in the conclusion as well. The idea is to read between the lines and make inferences as much as you can.

Implications mean the implied or subtle messages from a text. Every text has implications and especially literary texts. Look for them and make inferences about characters, themes and ideas and bring this into your Paper 2 response.
