BS… slavery has always been taught. What people are trying to teach is that some people are perpetually oppressed and some are perpetually the oppressors. People are trying to teach that the nation was founded and built on racism and they are trying to teach people that they are owed something because someone in the past was enslaved or discriminated against because of their race.

@Willie Duffie i mean as you wish, co tinuing life story it's funny growing up I LOVE learning, I was a huge fekkin nerd. But growing up in Oklahoma our education was one of the worst, heavily biased and outright wrong or not taught at all in some topics. Most of what stuck during my time in high-school was psychology art and music (because as an autistic person I wanted to better understand myself and those around me)

I lived in South Minneapolis a few miles from where George Floyd and Justine Damond were murdered by police officers. The community was completely traumatized. No one talks about the fact that Nazis descended on our streets and a white person burned down the police department and another white person lit the match on the very first building that burned. It was Charlottsville in Minneapolis.

Kendi's book: how much I don't know, how I need to keep learning, how I'm not as open minded as I believed I was, how I've missed so much that is right in front of me...my list goes on and on. I want to be better, especially for my grandchildren. In Nic Stone's books, she introduced me to voices I've never heard before. I didn't know that I wasn't listening. IMO, when a white person says that, it means they are a racist, even if they insist that they are not. This comes from a person with enough black in her to qualify as black under Jim Crow, whose ancestor put white on all the children's birth certificates and so mine says white. However, interestingly, I never felt comfortable around white people and always felt at home with black and Latino cultures before I found out I was Jim Crow black.

Uncle DL…I havent been this uncomfortable watching a black man speak on TV since Obama’s inauguration. And I love it. Discomfort means growth. Well in this case it’s fear lol. I thought did he just drop the N word..he did! So I text my bestie and we discussed. Conclusion was ‘Oh no, they are gonna come for Uncle…and he dgaf! He wants them to, he’s ready. Loving your audacity and tenacity. Thanks for all you do for our community. Oh and as for white folk experiencing police violence, look up the Officer Goines case here in Houston. Black officers shot up a white couple in their home, no knock raid and wring house. Didn’t make national news because they were poor and lived in the hood. I use this to tell white folk, if all lives matter, then when this happened, why were you not there for this couple? Why are you not speaking to BLM for guidance on how to protest this? If you truly believed that then you’d be shoulder to shoulder with BLM.

When I was really young (7-8?) I lived near a laundromat. There was a younger black boy (5-6?) who would sometimes come and look for me to play with. There was day when a problem happened. Our family was friends with another family, and their oldest girl was my age. I was a shy and thoughtful child and also wanted to be everybody's best friend, but was uncomfortable around those I didn't know. So when that family came to visit (a somewhat rare occasion) I was playing with the oldest (M) and the little boy (L) came looking for me. I felt there was a chance M would also be uncomfortable with someone new. So I pulled her aside and asked her if she would mind if my other friend played with us. She said she didn't want him to play with us. I felt bad, but tried to kindly explain that my friend I didn't see very often didn't want to play with him . I didn't understand then why L never looked for me again. I'm not sure when I realized 2 things. That must've been very hurtful to L and his family, and M and her father were always overtly racist . I also realized I shouldn't have asked L what I did, and it would've been better to explain to him about some people and tell him to ask his mom if he should play with us that day. Now I know that, but at that age I still had much to learn. I still have much learning to do, though I'm much better than then. 🫤

Conservatism, by it's very nature, desires the status quo. To keep things as they are. Why? Because for Conservatives things are working for them. Civil rights, social and professional progress is not a concern to them because the current system works for them. I've seen so many of my Conservative friends have little to no understanding of the struggles of others but at the same time once THEY are at the feet of similar injustices or biases do they suddenly rise to speak out about it. But even as they do so they are simply looking out for themselves and not their friends, neighbors or communities. Kendi and Stone are correct that DENIAL of injustices is the problem but as societies and communities are splintering due to rabbit holes like the internet where one can find solace for preconceived biases it is up to Communities at the local level to have discussions, not arguments, to address how WE can all do better for one another. As the old saying goes, "A rising tide lifts all boats".

Glad the book is for youth, that's when people are most easily influenced by peers. I went to a rich almost all white school, I was close to the only three black kids. Two were athletes and held in some regard, the other wanted to be a theater kid and the racism and ignorance was heaped on him. After a few long lectures and getting ready the riot act by me, another semi popular white kid, some people started to listen. As an adult, was sent multiple emails of gratitude for helping my fellow students grow up to be better than their parents and they were happy it allowed them to be better parents themselves and happy to be free of feeling a need to teach hatred to their children, happy for their kids to enjoy the beauty of our diverse world instead of seeing them live in confusion and fear.

7:25 Turning inward is key but it must be with compassion and growth mindset. john a. powell (civil rights attorney, head of ACLU) talks about how people are having a lot of anxiety about identity due to changes in the world and it feels scary to them. He says, “If it’s not going to be scary, we have to create the conditions and the stories that help people step into a new space.” Showing compassion towards oneself, turning inward with growth mindset- these things can help people move into the new space. Justin Michael Williams talks about Calling Forward, instead of calling out, which also creates less scary conditions. Resmaa Menakem talks about somatic abolitionism and how racism is embodied. Gabor Mate talks about what white supremacy does to white bodies. James Baldwin spoke about how white supremacy is a self-worth issue. Alyson Stoner talks about shifting our minds with embodied activism. This all requires turning inward.

Can't recommend Racism Without Racists by Eduardo Bonilla-Silva enough for further reading on anti-racism. The interviews with well-meaning white moderates and liberals within it are challenging, unflinching portraits of modern white Americans' relationship with race and how "color-blind" racism has survived our culture's outward condemnation of more overt forms of racism through the practices collectively known as white habitus.

I appreciate The Daily Show having this discussion not only in highlighting the book, but also for spotlighting the movement, however I have to ask if your lack of addressing Dr. Ibram X. Kendi with the appropriate and duly earned title of Dr. or the Post-Nominal letters of PhD in the video's title and description at Dr. Kendi's request/wishes? With all that TDS has done over the past few years working to improve social equality by spotlighting issues of racism, bigotry, discrimination, and inequality, while also giving well deserved recognition spotlighting the efforts, accomplishments, and contributions of women and non whites that is long overdue having been all but lost to white-washed history, I would hate to think that it is an accident of ignorance not realizing that he's earned the respectful recognition of attaining a doctorate by addressing him in written form with either 'Dr.' preceding his name or with 'PhD' following his name.

So you agree with Ibram X Kendi's basic philosophy that past racism can only be rectified by future racism? He's an intellectual lightweight bozo who refuses to debate other great minds in Blackademia because he knows he would get destroyed.

"...At one time, it was illegal for enslaved people to learn and now it is illegal for us to learn about enslaved people." Deep! At some point, African-Americans will have to admit that you may integrate everything physical except the hearts and minds of people who would rather remain segregated. That dude in Fl should not be able to stop my children from knowing the history of this country. It is time for my people to mobilize a national effort to make sure that they read every burned book the choose to deny our children.

In Tacoma,WA, my black neighbor across the fence told me outright that only black people can define the difference between a black person and a n+ggr. I love that neighbor who was caring for his grandkids who were friends with my kids.

One problem is throwing the word “racist” around. The appropriate term is “white supremacist”. Though synonymous, one doesn’t have to be racist to be a white supremacist, while a racist is ALSO a white supremacist.
