They still have designated smoking cars on the train! That's almost enough to make me want to move there from the U.S. (Why is a Puccini aria, "O Mio Babbino Caro," followed by a Neapolitan song, "Funiculi, Funicula," being sung/broadcast in a Dutch themed park in Japan?!)

I'm glad you went to Sapporo. I recently watched a super fun J-Drama on Netflix called Stay Tuned set in the wacky world of Sapporo local TV. You do see a lot of overhead shots of the town and surrounding areas and it looked really interesting. I might just have to fit it onto my long planned, long postponed visit.

I wanted to go to Husten Bosch during my overseas studies in Japan but didn‘t end up to. So it was nice to see it in your video. However, I‘m planning to go to the original flower garden in the Netherlands in a few weeks and I‘m really excited about it. The Japanese have great taste to like the Netherlands. They have both benefitted greatly from trading and exchanging science knowledge with each other. I remember that bridge in Okinawa that blocked the sea view. It sucks indeed xD Great video!

Just a short explanation as to why this theme park was built. The Dutch were in fact the ONLY westerners that were allowed to trade with Japan when the isolationist period started (sakoku) up until the Americans imposed trade when showing up with their so-called black ships (kurofune) in the mid XIVth century. The Dutch had a tiny settlement called Dejima in the outskirts of Nagasaki where all goods were carefully inspected before entering the country. The main reason for this is because the local governors at that time wanted to prevent the spread of Christianity they judged incompatible with Buddhism and Japanese culture. The Jesuits, especially the Portuguese and some Spaniards were pissing the shoguns off with their intense conversion campaigns and their deportation - and elimination in case of non compliance ultimately saved Japan from this form of colonialism in my opinion. In the meantime Korea got largely christianized and the Church was getting a larger foothold in China. Though the Dutch were not the best at assimilating the colonized peoples and mingling with them (cf. Indonesia), they were extremely wise at doing business and simply did not bother trying to promote Christianity in Japan, hence the exception.

Interestingly, Hokkaido is more sparsely populated than the Tohoku region of Japan. It's part of the reason why JR Hokkaido is in so much trouble while JR East is super profitable (though JR east has the benefit of running all Tokyo's commuter lines).

I think we as internet-tians have relied too much on putting people into country boxes, when there's often vast cultural and linguistic differences within a country. It is good to see more people looking further than the lines drawn on the map.

"Are you broken?" 😂 I had a cat who was that unnecessarily vocal. Her name was Deeojee (D-O-G), shortened to Dee, and quickly extended again to Demon. Beautiful grey & orange torbie who WOULD NOT SHUT UP, and insisted on clearing every surface she could get to. My current kitties are much quieter. Camo ("The Queen Mother, Camilla") and Pebbles ("Lady Penelope of Lorne"), and their cross-country brother Billy ("Sir William, Black Knight of Lorne"). Cross-country brother because sometimes he lives here in Newfoundland with me, and sometimes he lives in BC with my mother.

Even though I've never been anywhere in Japan or East Asia, and I've just read about those parts, I love Hokkaido. It's quite similar in climate and many other physical aspects to New England, Upstate New York, and adjacent portions of Canada (e.g. Montreal, where I live). It's way less crowded than the rest of Japan, and the original ethnic stock (Ainu) is much different from much of the rest of Japan. Don't get me wrong, I love Japanese culture as a whole and I love the rest of Japan, but Hokkaido is something else.

Japan looks horrible. So much nature gone, so much city portrayed as civilization, but it ends up as less of places to feel alive. Nature seems like just park. But the Dutch theme park, wow, very well done. Being Dutch I see they've taken our highlights and put them smartly together. It only lacks trees and aliveness.
@idkhowbutdiscosarechemical3 жыл бұрын
Actually, most of Japan is nature because it's very mountainous, so people didn't build cities there, only in the flat spaces in between. This is why so many people live in so few cities in Japan and why the cities are so densely populated. However, as with most countries on earth, there is a lot of land that has become more urban and its nature has been destroyed.
