omg legit same thing, my parents wanted me to become a doctor (typical asain/african parents lol) bc like eveyone else in our family is a doctor lol but i chose to do psychology and i know its what i love and didnt give a f**** at what they said and what my other family members said. bc at the end of the day you're gonna be doing the hard work therefore you need to choose something you enjoy doing.

my parents are very typically asian.. my father was a doctor and my parents always insisted that a degree in a good subject was essential... if you dont have a degree in asian culture you are a failure... i didnt get a degree i was a university dropout but i showed my parents i wasnt a total loser and became a multi millionaire instead

i relate to this so much! i’m going to a russell group university this year but i haven’t made anyone in my asian family very proud because i’m doing liberal arts lol. I know what it’s like to feel alienated by your community for doing humanities/social sciences. I find myself wishing a lot of the time that I was pursuing law or economics or medicine like all the other asian girls but i just can’t put myself through that to “fit in”. I know that a lot of asians actually do those things because of cultural pressure to conform and “get a good job”, lots of asian (desi) girls i know aren’t even excited to do medicine but they feel pressured. So i think people like us (brown people who refuse to to conform) will inspire those who feel pressured by their culture. I guess if most brown people choose not to do things because there’s barely any poc then there will always be a lack of poc in those sectors. People like me and Ibz can be that change!

Shehzadi Aziz yesss same, as of now I am 3/4 months away from sitting my A level exams and I am still unsure as to what to do at uni, at first I was following what my dad, and my extended family were suggesting and advising me to do, or TELLING me to do and while I took what they said into consideration, I decided fuck this I'm going to do what I really want to do at uni but I'm just worried for that backlash that will come from my extended family (we are quite a small family which is shocking as most Asian families are huge) and I do understand their point of view on the courses I choose, but they put me off doing psychology which I really wanted to do since secondary school, and directed me to do courses that I didn't exactly like such as mental health nursing, medicine etc. I think another reason as to why I'm hesitant on doing what I really would love to do is the thought of what if my family were right and that it would of been better to do the course they said?!

Angelinia Y im doing my exams this year too! yes it’s such a sad thing, parents like ours make us doubt ourselves so much. i ultimately chose liberal arts because it’s flexible and i’m also not sure what career i want to go into as well. i suggest you look at that degree programme, it’s new to the uk but well known particularly in america

If I had done arts at a level I would have defo done it at uni, but again a levels were another thing that family told me what I should pick and shouldn't pick. Its sad.

Im in a similar situation. My parents want me to do medicine. I'm asian by the way 😂Anyways, I want to get into maths at uni, but I don't want to upset them. They're paying for me to go to a private sixth form, not any of my siblings. It's not as easy to just do the course I want to do. They're already going through a lot, and I don't want to disappoint them like my elder siblings have by not doing medicine. I asked them why they want me to do medicine, and they say it'll give me a better future. I've explained to them that maths could do the same but they don't listen.
