That whole spotify thing is so wrong. I dont really mind the platform, it is not expensive to get premium. But no comments is so wierd. Not just stupid shit, but it allowed for JRE fans and critics alike to discuss/debate some of the more controversial conversations that happen on the show. If Rogan hadn’t gotten such a backlash from the Jack Dorsey interview we probably would never had a second one with Tim Pool thrown into the mix. I think that without the immediate congregation of people Joe brings together via KZbin comments sections is a lot harder to ignore than individuals reaching out through Twitter where it comes off as more of a personal opinion.

It was weird when Grigory’s friend “had a heart attack” and died in the documentary. If he had stayed in Russia I guarantee he would’ve mysteriously passed away and we would’ve never known about this.

Your right. There was a journalist that was exposing the government they tried to kill. I forgot how but they drugged him with a drug widely unknown that only Russians have possession scientists made and have possession of he barley made it out the country before it started taking affect by an emergency landing, but he was on probation from some bs charge they pulled on him for other documentary and jailed him for leaving the country.

@@bradcoats5522 You are talking about Alexei Navalny. He made a very good documentary on Putin's Palace when he was evacuated to Germany, which relates good information on Putin's past in the KGB and his corruption. Navalny did not have to return to Russia, knowing what was waiting for him, an extremely brave man. His daughter Daria is attending Stanford in California and recently received the EU's highest honor for him in his absence. Russia has murdered other journalists. Everyone should see the Putin's Palace video. And it wouldn't be a bad idea to be fluent in what Paul Manafort did in Ukraine for Yanukovych, who built the Museum of Corruption there, also there are videos on that estate.

“I’m alive” is quite a normal response in Russian to “how are you doing” people there don’t ask how are you doing to be polite but only if they care. It is a blunt and straightforward culture that respects genuine and humble answers so responding “I’m alive” is like say we have good days and bad days I’m just thankful I’m alive. Interesting how cultural differences make responses seem so different.

This whole story is so tragic. In Soviet times I doubt he had any choice and did what he was told to do. It’s hard nowadays to imagine the psychological impact of living under the soviet regime. I feel very sad to think of his family - all pawns to a bunch of powerful; egomaniacal liars. Rodchenkov will probably never see his family or live a normal life ever again - Lance Armstrong’s story is like a fairy tale in comparison- I wish Grigory good luck and some peace in the knowledge that he stood up for truth in the end

It was already proven, that there were no clear evidence found of what Rodchenkov said, moreover IOC revealed that some of his claims about Russia were fake, so majority of sanctions against athletes from Russia were dismissed. And yes, it means that those sanctions were set because of political reasons, i.e. because Russia is Russia. Multiple athletes from US are using banned substances, but they have "official" permission for that from US medical committee and these athletes are not sanctioned, because IOC and other international sports associations "see no reason not to trust US medical authorities", in other words it means "US are good guys by default and everything they do is good, and Russians are bad guys and everything they do is bad, so we will put sanctions against Russia anyway".

I loved Icarus and I WANT to love Bryan Fogel, but I was shocked at his ego in this. He complained for almost an entire half hour about not getting a proper distribution deal for The Dissident. I'm sure there are business and political reasons behind it too, but he's not automatically entitled to get a massive film distribution deal because his documentary subject matter is worthy and admirable. The Icarus publicity seems to have unduly affected him. The way he talks about saving people's lives, it's like, yeah, technically ok. But the way that he presses on about it. It really lacks self awareness. He's clearly had a very tough time in the past with a failed movie project, and Icarus has transformed his life. I just expected a little more humility from a guy like him. I actually felt myself blushing for him when he was going on and on about the global impact of Icarus. Joe was very restrained and polite in letting him go off the way he did, and so repetitively and for so long. It was like listening to Edward Snowden at times. A painful listen overall. I'll watch The Dissident. But telling me that I apparently don't know the full story of what happened with Khashoggi? That's pretty arrogant. If I was a film distributor, I'd wonder where the actual story is there. Everyone knows what happened in that embassy. The fact that he got his hands on a transcript doesn't mean that what's in it wasn't already widely reported. There's no positive angle with which to exit the documentary. It's not immediately obvious to me that there's a satisfying narrative arc to be had in Khashoggi's murder story. And that's something all great docs need. Icarus had it. And all the other great ones have it. Crying political persecution is not necessarily the whole story here. Scapegoating Netflix after they won him an Oscar is plain rude. I hope he gets back on his bike and digs into sport again, because he's got a great feel for documentary. I also hope he stops feeling like his next project has to save someone or the world in some way. He would do well to look at someone like Alex Gibney, who balances interesting storylines with political takes (regardless of whether you agree with their broadly liberal slant or not) and are very very entertaining while teaching you a little something, as long as you're prepared to come to your own conclusions with the material on offer.

I don't understand why the filmmakers can just run around and not worry about getting killed but the scientist guy has to go into witness protection? I mean income in the documentary they made such a big deal out of it but I'm pretty sure they could have found him if they had wanted to consider he was buying aeroplane tickets and flying around and all kinds of stuff like that.
