This movie is worth watching just for Simon Pegg. He’s hilarious and steals every scene he’s in. “Buck, when exactly did you lose your mind?” “Hmm, three months ago. I woke up one morning married to a pineapple. An UGLY pineapple! (Sigh) But I loved her.”

I remember seeing it online years after it was in theaters on a bored whim during the middle of a school week. It was entertaining enough to kill an afternoon, but there was always one scene that stuck with me. When Buck was talking about his past, they animate him so DIFFERENTLY. Like how you talked about Hotel Transylvania and each of the characters moving differently, you SEE how Buck of the past moved differently to the Buck of the present. He's jittery, he's nervous, and it all comes through in the animation. We don't really get a lot of backstory for him, but we see he wasn't always a slightly psychotic kook with a knife. It struck me as just being very sad, seeing someone before the world broke them and they cobbled themselves back together. And it was just a quick 1-2 minute piece of animation. And none of it was really explicit with what happened, or at least I don't remember it like that. That just always stuck in my head.

@PeterPeter-pr2hi2 жыл бұрын
I really have to say that I like how this trilogy is structured (yes, let's only talk about the first three movies here). In the first one, Manny is basically at his lowest point, being completely alone with his wife and child killed by humans. In the end, however, he manages to find happiness in life once again, and finds great friends in Diego and Sid. In the second film, he falls in love with Ellie and now, even his previous family "starts returning" with him having a new wife. And it makes sense that for a conclusion, their baby is born, and in the end of the trilogy, he manages to finally get a family again. Call it too sweet or whatever, but it's just a very emotional way to conclude all this, and if it stayed a trilogy, probably the whole franchise would be better looked at and actually felt like one continous franchise instead of just lazy sequels spammed out for money.
@ahmedgobba95712 жыл бұрын
One thing I think is kind of wrong here is I'm pretty Manny didn't lose his wife and child, I think he actually lost both of his parents, I remember in the painting Sid said the smallest Mammoth looks exactly like Manny.
@PeterPeter-pr2hi2 жыл бұрын
I think it actually was his son and wife. When I first watched the movie, I thought the small mammoth was Manny too until other people pointed it out that it was his son. And it makes sense based on the paintings, because the dad is in a position where he can escape, whereas rocks are thrown to the mother and the kid, meaning that they cannot survive that, and the small mammoth cannot really be Manny. I think Sid's remark is moreso to express that Manny's son looks exactly like him.
@DiegoRedeemedLover2 жыл бұрын
@@ahmedgobba9571 Sid meant the adult mammoth in the cave paintings that is the direct match for Manny himself. Manny has never been the child. The calf in the cave paintings is the son he lost to hunters and why he is so protective of Roshan in IA1 becos in his mind he links Roshan to his murdered son and why he ensures Roshan's return to his own father - something _he_ will never have, himself, with his own son. ;;

It is a rather big shame that they were never able to reach this level again. While I think the first is my favorite just for the dynamic the main trio had and how well the writers took advantage of the characters, their quirks, and growth- this movie is the one that has always been widely considered the “best,” and for good reason. None of the characters get annoying here. The jokes land really well, they are creative, and the mix of humor oriented towards both adults and younger viewers is pretty well balanced. I always loved the bit where they find the broccoli Sid left behind and Buck, knowing very little about Sid (and just being a bit loony) comes up with random possible scenarios. The old timey reel of Sid laughing maniacally and beating the camera with the broccoli, Diego responding with “Sid’s not violent….or coordinated,” I just love that whole bit. They made so many “right” choices with this film. Definitely the most memorable of the series by far.

@@jlev1028 That's actually not true, two writers from the original IA1 screenplay, Michael Berg, and Peter Ackerman, returned to help with the screenplay (worked on by four writers) for Dawn of the Dinosaurs. I for one personally believe the presence of Berg and Ackerman helps give DoTD a more "IA1 feel" than any of the other sequels, I don't know how they did it! However, none of the original writers for IA1 itself (Michael Wilson, Berg, and Ackerman) returned for *IA2* which explains the disconnect you reference since it was other writers - from the Simpsons - who wrote the humans out. The IA1 writers who had originally been brought back for IA2's script had wanted them to be a part of the series going forward, but ran into creative differences with Blue Sky's producer, Lori Forte, and left, but two managed to come back for IA3 despite those differences.

I also love how they literally made the Scrat story work because the movie was coming out around Valentine's day and all of the merch that was flying off the shelves because of it. And Manny being so batshit crazy about having kids after what happened to him in the first movie was just so good to see, but not a lot of other people put it together. It's like how Land Before Time was the movie that made every kid in the 80s cry, and yet the library of sequels were made too kid friendly, but that's the only major flaw I can site with this that Doug hasn't covered already. It's a guilty pleasure for sure.

As a kid, I absolutely loved Buck. He was so much fun and was legitimately funny

Makes the fifth one that much worse that even Buck couldn’t save it

"Rudy ends up being a dinosaur." In a movie called Dawn of the Dinosaurs. You don't say. 😂

I was on a Flight to NYC when I saw this movie for the first time after seeing the laughing gas scene I was desperately trying to hold my laughter so I didn’t wake the whole plane up

I also enjoyed the 3rd one the most of the first three. It had terrific energy, pacing, and action, and doggone it was funny.

3 was probably the franchise peak and definitely where they should’ve cut it off

Rudy should have been a giant prehistoric dodo. The earlier shots build it up, it ties back to the first film and it would have been funny as hell

0:51 You mentioned at the beginning of the month that you've never watched an Ice Age movie. Do they still screen these in theaters today?

Ice Age 3 is the most fun Ice Age to watch in my eyes

Believe me Doug… this will be the last genuinely GOOD Ice Age movie you’ll EVER see.

I mean Rudy's big payoff is that he's basically the Moby Dick of dinosaurs. Always thought it was a neat enough climax on its own.

Simon Pegg was the best part of this movie. His charisma makes up for some of the bad jokes he says.

I didn't even notice that the shell from the second movie was still being used in the opening scene of this movie. That was so dark, so funny, that my mouth literally dropped open in shock before I had a genuine laugh.

Fun Fact: this film was once the third highest grossing animated film of all time right after Shrek 2 & Toy Story 3.

Can’t help but ponder something that could be sacrilegious to day outloud: Did Ice Age 3 better handle the “main characters becoming parents” better than Shrek the Third? If so, I might finally be able to understand this love for the series that I never could figure out back when 20th century was devoured by the mouse. Otherwise from what I’ve heard, we might be at the apex of the series of films and we might be going downhill soon. Not sure if it was the 4th or 5th (or both), but apparently things are about to get bumpy.

The 4th one was alright but the 5th tried jamming way too many plot points in it and it suffered as a result.

I agree. Dawn of the Dinosaurs is easily, the best Ice Age movie of the whole franchise. I expected to be a Bonkers movie level, and that's what I got from this film.
