Hey Don, another great video! My wife and I are planning our first trip to Flaming Gorge next month. We don’t live very far from there but have never been. I discovered your channel a few months ago and they are getting me excited for the trip!

Thanks!! I tried to get a couple of my buddies here in Manila to go with me, but each of them had their own ideas for the day. Or, I would have been able to shoot some photos before releasing her. As it was, there was no way I would put that fish on my deck for more than a few seconds.

Great video! I see you are using custom rods here. Are there any bass rods that would be good for this type of fishing? A medium heavy moderate, or moderate fast?

Any medium heavy rod will work. With this particular bite, I depend on my rods (and I use up to four of them but of course only two for one angler at a time.) Most of my other rods in this situation are Dobyns rods mediums (bass fishing) and a medium fast tip. These fish really hit hard so you must have some backbone to the rod as well as a good tip. The custom rods are medium rods and in fact, one of them lost its tip and is a little shorter. I believe they are 6' 6" rods. These rods would be my small swimbait and spinnerbait rods. Is that a casting reel? It looks like my trolling reels. Edit: just heard you say you get the line out with your trolling motor. Makes sense now! 😂

I picked up some inexpensive "counter" trolling reels specifically for this time of year. These truly don't work well to cast, but because of my bass fishing career, I have no problem getting them to cast out to 40 feet and then, yes, I engage the trolling motor to get them farther away from the boat. I know it's a weird technique but you can't imaging the fun when a 30-pound fish breaks the surface to "smash" a glide bait!

Just another quick point about shooting the video ... I am very sensitive about how I handle the larger lake trout. So, even with a cameraman, I would still keep the fish in the water and only remove it to take a few quick photos. The health of these big fish means the world to me. That's why it's more important to me to show my subscribers how I fish rather than always needing to hold up a personal best for a photo. But, if you know a good cameraman that would work for fee, let me know. Thanks for your comment.
