Certified ice-rescue instructor Luc Mehl enjoyed a rare and spectacular experience Oct. 26 when he and his wife skated an "ice window" on Rabbit Lake, Alaska. Mehl said the uncommon phenomenon, in which ice is snow free and clear as glass, lasted only a week.

This can happen to any lake with really clear water. I've seen it happen to Fish Lake, Dane County Wisconsin right near my house a couple times. I think it happens when you suddenly get cold temperatures but there's no wind or snow. I remember I could see snapping turtles slowly walking on the bottom and schools of fish! It was really cool.

This has only happened once in my 35 years of life on the lakes around me. I think I was 14 and we would skateboard on the ice and it being clear it was just amazing. Very specific special conditions have to occur for the lake to freeze clear and it is something I will never forget and every year I wish it would happen again.
@alinbejinaru1755
@alinbejinaru1755 9 ай бұрын
The condition should be like temperatures of between 0-5°C (or something like that in order for the air to escape from under the ice/water, the lake should be very well insulated for water to slowly freeze,water to be static and not so deep,etc. You can do a transparent piece of ice in any form if you use a box or a container made of a material that is working properly as a thermal insulator,and a constant temperature.

I would be impressed beyond WORDS to see you skateboard on an icy, frozen lake! You must use some extremely rare and special wheels made out sandpaper or maybe polyurethane wheels with miniature metal spikes sticking out of each? Either way, my mouth would drop to the floor to see you slipping and sliding across the lake! 😮
@brandonlang9322
@brandonlang9322 9 ай бұрын
@@alexanderg117 lmao I might be able to still do it at 35 yrs old. My friends and I thought it wouldn't work but it actually wasn't to bad. We used normal skate wheels. We would powerslide really far, do kick flips, and you go fast go primo to glide on the side of the skateboard.

This reminds me of my childhood. I have experienced this only once in my life and I am holding onto this memory so much. I come from Poland and that one year was so different to the others as the temperature dropped -10 before any snow dropped and stayed like this for weeks. This was just before Christmas and I was 12 years old. I took my skates and I went to the lake. There were no skate marks on the ice, I was first. From the lake I skated into the joining rivers and I did it for hours. I didn't feel cold or hungry, it was beautiful. Whenever I feel sad, I go back there in my memories and I skate. It's amazing to experience something like this and as you say, it doesn't happen very often.

11 years of my life were devoted to competitive figure skating. My dad grew up in Boston and he told me about the frozen lakes he skated on while he was growing up. So I always wished I could skate on a lake or a huge pond. (In Seattle it doesn't get cold enough to freeze a lake, maybe a small pond or a large mud puddle 🫤) But THIS is just above and beyond anything I've ever dreamed of. It's amazing and absolutely beautiful. ........I know one thing for sure though, I would send someone else out first to see if it was gonna hold weight.... I'd be too scared that the ice would break. That water is so clear that it doesn't even look like ice! Thanks for sharing!

Got to witness something similar about ten years ago at a lake in my aunt's backyard. For it not to snow like that, the temperature has to drop like a rock to the point that it's too cold to snow. It went from ~40°F to ~-10°F overnight that night. The lake froze over thick enough to walk on in a very short time. You couldn't see the bottom, but there was no snow, so it was like a huge black mirror extending into the horizon. You could literally see yourself clear as day if you looked down. Walked out on it during sunset and it was reflecting everything, all orange and pink. Very beautiful, and something I'll never forget.

You can freeze ice in your freezer that clear as long as you insulate 5 out of the 6 sides of the block and take the ice out before it freezes from top to bottom. It forces the ice to freeze in only one direction pushing all the impurities to the bottom where you can remove the ice before it freezes that low or chop it off with a very sharp knife. If you freeze water from all sides, it will just push all the impurities that cause murkiness to the center. Plus, as ice expands as it freezes it will cause a pressure build up from the center and cause internal cracking of the ice cube.

@@ex0stasis72 I know you can do it at home, just use distilled water and boil the air out of it before putting it in the freezer. Insulating the container except for the top would probably help a lot too, for the reasons you bring up. I just never thought it could happen on this scale. The lack of any vegetation is probably the biggest difference, as no methane bubbles coming up from decomposing bio matter below.

I experienced this while skating in the Swedish archipelago north of Gothenburg ten years ago. We spoke with others we met and got to know it had been 40 years since it last happened. It was a partial but large area around Tjörn, within the islands. It was still very close to open ocean. About five inches of black, clear ice. It felt like skating on a mirror. Simultaneously we could observe the ice stretching far out towards the sea, where the ice undulated slightly on top of the waves beneath The conditions leading up to that weekend were similar. No downfall, no wind, clear cold skies and a calm ocean. I have seen a couple of lakes with similar quality since, but never on the ocean. I will never forget it.

It's hard to imagine a completely flat plane like that if you haven't stood on one. It was mildly disorienting even. Since the winds were calm, the alien sounds from the ice semed to carry for miles along the coast. It is interesting to see it from a differnet perspective compared to sailing during summer. Everyone should try tour skating, it is a relaxing and smooth way to travel. Once you get your speed up, hardly any effort is requried when not going against the wind. It's simply enough to rock your weight between the two skates and you will zip along.
