You know, despite having the appearance of a badly made scarecrow, Ichabod's voice (provided by *the* Bing Crosby) is pretty awesome. No wonder the women swooned later in the film.

Chivalry that existed merely because he was a displaced Connecticut Yankee freeloader with no real lodgings nor cooking skills of his own, as customary of the "educated" of the era, who were those that couldn't get into "manly" occupations after serving their country & more often than not, only knew the rudimental basics of higher learning, which was just enough to make them perfectly suited to instruct rambunctious country bumpkin children whose chief elders prescribed supernatural causes to anything they didn't understand, as these simple folk were often fearful that any new scientific knowledge would upheave their simple ways of life, but yet, they didn't want their children to remain brick dumb & ignorant. That said, the native Headless Horseman (a cranium-challenged ghastly Hessian soldier on demon horseback vengefully scarrowing the countryside during the witching hours from midnight until daybreak for his missing topper or a suitable replacement), essentially controlled by the wealthy Van Tassel family due to a debt repaid due to the Hessian saving the infant bloodline of ancestor Lady Elizabeth Van Tassel during a raid chronicled for the region's Bicentennial prior to losing his head via errant cannon fire at the Battle of White Plains, was justified karma collecting upon the crooked soul of the finicky schoolmaster for trying to woo Katrina just out of pure physical attraction placed slightly beneath using said attraction as a means to inherit her aging land baron father Baltus' vast, amassed fortune. In contrast to greedily sly Icabod, who only sought out Katrina Van Tassel for her father's money at the same time that her own temporary surface beauty played 2nd fiddle, presupposed local meathead blacksmith Abraham Van Brunt alias Brom Bones as inspired from the true to life Abraham Martling - in spite of harboring an intensely jealous hot streak to match his great feats of brawny strength, excellent horsemanship & a fondness towards pulling immature practical joke pranks - honestly & truly loved his vivacous lady fair (she herself was based on a genuine Van Tassel family aunt named Catriena [with Catriena being the "Old Dutch" spelling of Katrina, of course] in name only, meanwhile the coquettish shrewdness attributed to her within the LEGEND was actually taken from the personality & lifestyle of Catriena's catty niece, Eleneaor) who, per the story's context, was manipulating poor deluded Icabod (who was merely named after lifelong Revolutionary War colonel Icabod Bennett Crane while simultaneously also being based upon retired liutenant-turned-schoolteacher Samuel Young by profession, although the nervous pedagogue's renowned cowardice in the face of all sorts of unhealthy superstitions was entirely exclusive to author Washington Irving's inaugural American ghost story, as the 2 gentlemen whom the Icabod character took influence, if truth be told, were more in line with the later skeptical Jeff Goldblum & Johnny Depp reincarnations of that very character, at least in terms of what is known about the real-life personalities of the war vet & higher education instructor) to make the hotheaded rouge jealous so "the boisterous Brom" would take some of his rival's more charming aspects to heart to steal back her affections.

Fun Fact: Ichabod Crane was similar to Belle from Beauty and the Beast. The townspeople have admired that both Ichabod and Belle was odd and weird. And also, both Brom and Gaston have similar personalities
@XX-sp3tt5 жыл бұрын
Except underneath, Crane was a greedy opportunist, which he hid underneath his charm. And Brom does have a similar personality to Gaston, but is a decent enough guy at the end of the day.
@spencerbowden29795 жыл бұрын
X X it’s actually speculated the headless horseman was Brom trying to get rid of his competition. Not confirmed though.
@rstein9265 жыл бұрын
Spencer Bowden It is strongly suggested the ghost in this film was real and not Brom in disguise. The main evidence is Ichabod seeing the ghost’s headless neck.
@aaronying49895 жыл бұрын
That’s so interesting. Yes both openings are very similar. They’re walking through the town and people and looking and talking how off and strange they are. Fun songs.
@spencerbowden29795 жыл бұрын
rstein926 it being the ghost doesn’t make sense though. Cause if it really was the headless horseman ichabod should have been safe because he crossed the bridge.

So I was just rewatching this out of nowhere. It came on randomly and I wasn't paying much attention but, then I really listened unlike I did as a kid. I really watched and analyzed the movie and.. this was all that girls fault. She wanted all of this. It's crazy, really pay attention and listen to the narrator for real. She never even liked him, she just wanted to give Brom a hard ass time. And really think about this line and how Disney got BARS " And don't try to figure out a plan, you can't reason with a HEADLESS MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN". Means more than you think tbh. They changed the characters appearance because Johnny Depp is more attractive. But in the original stories and versions; the character is presented and meant to be very weird and ugly. They kept the weird part for Depps version by keeping him eccentric. To at least stay true to the character and story.

But both Jeff & Johnny were keen skeptics-turned-true believers in their portrayals of the lanky displaced Connecticut Yankee educator, to be more in line with the 2 real-life people author Washington Irving based the finicky schoolmaster upon when he first wrote the LEGEND to begin with.
