Ichiro is arguably the best ever. If he had started his career in MLB, he would have destroyed Pete Rose's record. And I mean absolutely annihilated it.

At least he passed Rose's record, that's matters.
@davidstewart1757
@davidstewart1757 10 ай бұрын
I'm not sure about that. Don't get me wrong; I think Ichiro is one of the greatest players I've ever seen. However, he had 1,200 hits in his Japanese NPB career. If you add that to his MLB stats, he would have had 4,300 hits or so in his career, only a few dozen than Rose's record, which stands at 4256 hits. Plus, the pitching in the NPB is -- and certainly was at the time -- of a much lower standard than the pitching in the MLB, which is why Suzuki's batting average was about 40 points less in the MLB than it was in the NPB, despite being a more experienced hitter when he arrived in the MLB. So, I think we can safely say the following about Ichiro's likelihood of breaking Rose's record: Could Ichiro have broken the record if he had played his entire career in the US? Perhaps; it's certainly possible. Would he have smashed the record? Very likely not.
@Lowtendo
@Lowtendo 9 ай бұрын
@@davidstewart1757NPD also plays 20 less games a year. So he would've had another 180 games to get there. Not saying he would cause your point still stands about pitching and I'd also add the defensive play was worse as well. Still had a shot though.
@Ahilliard44
@Ahilliard44 2 ай бұрын
I air on the side that he definitely would break that record and there are a few reasons why. First what was already mentioned, number of games. Second, starting in the MLB would have allowed him to reach his peak faster than he did in Japan. This matters a lot because it completely changes his trajectory for his career. Remember MLB is the top of the top in every aspect for a reason. Coaching is one of the main reasons. Techniques etc. with Ichiro’s legendary talent and his unyielding work ethic literally forced into his dna by his peers overbearing father, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that with more time in the mlb you would see him be almost double as good as he was!!!!

Been i diehard mlb fan for 40+ years. Old time collector, love the game, go ahead and laugh at this statement. If ichiro would have played his first 9 years in the mlb he very well have been considered the greatest player to ever play.. you watch his speed, ability to steal base, the jump and angles he took to flyballs when he was young was absolutely incredible. I know the Japanese pro league isn't what mlb, i am talking about the athletic abilities of this man. As it is he still a top 20 player to ever play on mlb...

I'm only a few years shy of 70 now. So I've not watched baseball in awhile due to players canceling the world series. That said, there's a lot of greatest categories: basestealing, pure hitting, greatest all around, greatest HR hitter, etc. Maybe Suzuki was the greatest fielding/leadoff/base stealing player ever. Definitely in the top 5. To me, the greatest all around player of all time is Babe Ruth. Don't agree? Thats cool. BUT-Name me another 20 game winning pitcher, who, I believe, led the A.L. in ERA one season, with over 700 Homer's, and a .342 lifetime batting average. Didn't think so......

@tusk779 3 жыл бұрын
Not even. You’re talking about the best contact hitter of all time, probably the longest hitting streak of all time, probably 4500 hits, and a career .320+ avg as the best player to ever play the game. Half his career in the mlb might have earned him that title regardless

Hmm, not Ruth/Mays/Cobb level, but he'd probably have the career record for hits. At his prime as a hitter, he was something like a 130 OPS+ guy, which doesn't get you into Ruth territory, but he's one of the more complete baseball players I've seen. I'd say he'd be regarded along the lines of Rickey Henderson.

@Anonymous Haha well his stats from Japan are very similar to his mlb career and he was in his prime in Japan so that favors the notion he would have at least batted the same in the US as he did in his 9 years in Japan. Dude was batting over 300 in 2016 at 43 years old. Definitely one of the greatest had he played 28 years in MLB, dont be a hater just cause he is not American...

It's an interesting question, but honestly, I really wonder if he would've even gotten the chance to play in the MLB had he been born in America. Talent would have never been the issue obviously, but his build was considered too slim for pro baseball by JAPANESE standards, who are, uh, a bit smaller than Americans to say the least. Even while he was tearing up the minors in Japan, his manager never called him up until he was fired. If he was playing in America and hitting for like .800 in high school, scouts STILL would have slept on him because of his size and been considered a 'high floor, low ceiling player', someone that just 'couldn't make it' at the highest level, only dominate inferior competition. If they have to, scouts ALWAYS choose 'potential' over 'talent', especially when it comes to players like Altuve or Ichiro who they literally think can't compete in the Big Leagues because of their outlier builds. Ofc, if he grew up playing in America, he might have done steroids himself, just so he could make it to the Big Leagues. I shiver thinking what Ichiro on steroids would have been capable of.

Not only that, he had a gun arm to cut down runners going for home, plus he was exceptionally quick . Being only 5'11" and kinda spindly, he is a sure lock for he HOF in his 1st year of eligibility> well done Ich

His very last game, he fired a bullet from right field so accurately that the infielder didn’t even need to move. The runner didn’t even try.

Ichiro Made a fantastic catch in right field. Playing in outfield, you should pay attention to the warning track. Luckily he was ok after making that great catch.

Ichiro crashed into the wall and was seriously injured. However, he recovered to a minor injury before he could stand up. All joking aside, his amazing ability to recover was the secret that allowed him to play in the MLB until he was 45.

Nobody else in MLB this century makes that catch and probably only Ashburn (500 POs in a season 4X) makes that catch in baseball history. BTW, Ichiro despite playing his 1st 7 (age20-26 most athletic) full seasons in Japan is the only MLB RF to make 350 POs in a season 3X and set new AL season PO records in back (2004-2005) seasons. His 2005 total of 381 is still the AL record. If he plays RF in the MLB during those 1st 7 seasons he definately makes 400 in season at least once.

Despite being a one of a kind hitter and a magnificent base runner, this is what Ichiro does best. That's playing the OF. He ranks at the top with Speaker & Ashburn all-time.
