greed, then more greed; look at sport, film, music 'stars', CEOs and suchlike ...granted some give to charity but there is a growing imbalance between poor and wealthy. the idea that the resources of Earth & humanity should be evenly spread means that those at the top would have to give almost everything they have so that everyone in the world could live a 'decent' life. it never going to happen...and thus in the process many of us in the 'middle' will suffer also

What an eloquent comment. I share the feeling. I fuzzily remember first seeing this with my mom, sometime in the 70s, on late night TV on a black and white TV. In the 80s, I borrowed the library's VHS copy many times. I'd forgotten about it until I saw it on Netflix, maybe in 2012, when they were just moving to streaming and had almost no real movies. What a trip to rewatch in my 40s, understanding the contributions of Douglass Trumbull, Peter Shickele, and Joan Baez. The visuals may be a little rough for a modern viewer, but considering when it was made, it's in keeping with what was possible. More importantly, it tapped into the era's serious science fiction. Ursula K. LeGuin could've written Silent Running.

Yeah this is my favourite film of all time, I would stumble across it on tv, and then managed to record on VHS. Yes its true it has some shortcomings, like its tricky to appreciate that a botanist struggles to fathom how lack of sun is adversely affecting plant life, and clever how they don't make a big song and dance about conquering microgravity!!... like many films of this era budget was on a shoestring, but what they achieved with this film was the strong message which is increasingly relevant today but which really made an impression on me as a kid ... I am sure it helped unlock some Freeman Lowell spirit in all who watched it. I think its time this film were introduced to a new audience, if it were remade with the same TLC as Blade Runner 2049 (fantastic film) I would be first in the queue.

There are a couple of things that really scare me in terms of mankind's ability to destroy itself. The first would be a lab created virus or other biological organism that would wipe us out. And the second is how agricultural businesses are engineering things like fruits and vegetables that have seeds that will not germinate and grow into new plants. I can imagine a day when they make GMO corn that somehow crosses with regular corn to the point where regular corn just won't grow into new corn. I might be imagining it, but tomatoes grown today just don't taste like they used to. I tried buying them from a number or roadside "stands" the past two summers and none of them had the same rich tomato taste they did from 15 years ago. Mankind is trying to play God now and it probably won't end well.

One of my favourite fims. I was in third grade, 1973, Mannheim BFV, and was in tears by the end of the movie.

Saw this film in 1974 when I spent half a year in England, in Bray and Marlow on Thames. As a German I was not familiar with these double features and - not to believe - smoking was allowed ! The second film was American Graffiti. Both films impressed me very much and I couldn´t forget them. Right now I saw the end of Silent Running after many many years and it brought back a lot of memories. I loved this film - I still do.

When I saw this as a kid I can't stop crying for half an hour. The movie shows the true nature of human existence: Destruct whatever you can before someone gets it.

same here, totally lost it when the the got swept off the ship, then the next got hit.... the closing part tore my heart out as a young child. It did however out me on a path towards a life of animals, plants and true humanity...

Great movie, great song. That bit right near then end when huey, dewie or louie (not sure which) turns round and looks at one of the ships always gets me big time.

Martin Legg I don’t think he was looking at anything, if you’re thinking about the very final scene in the movie when Dewey is tending to the forest in the only remaining dome, as the camera is pulling away, revealing how isolated and alone he will be, forever. That final scene gets me going every time, even almost 50 years later.

A haunting song and movie that I never forget, not a commercial success, or even know, but it instilled a feeling in me as a young boy. Bruce Dern did a wonderful job as the anti hero- a great actor never really playing the big star, but a dominant force. Love this actor, love the three robots: Huey, duet, and Louis and love the music and message.

Just saw this movie for the first time... truly moving. Haunting. They don't let a man just sit with who he is and what he's done anymore. Everybody has to be a hero type now.

I really like this movie, and Joan Baez is one of the very best all time folk singers. My younger brother was lucky to hear her sing at Woodstock. I'm so envious of him.

ANYONE WANT TO START A SILENT RUNNING FAN CLUB? This movie is just TOO good, and those of us that love it, LOVE it. We're changed by it. I saw it when I was 8 or something and can't shake it from my mind. I'm now 41, and share it with my daughter. How we really must tend to our fields of children.

This poignant film and its heartfelt message, coupled with the intro sung by Joan Baez never fails to grab me by the throat. Sentimental? Sure, but I'd rather be sentimental and show my love of humanity and nature than be a callous, indifferent arse hole - that's English for 'asshole'.
@mungojerie81178 жыл бұрын
It also makes me weep for humanity, Joans voice usually makes me cry anyway,but coupled with this story, It brings me to tears every time.
