We were lucky enough in Ipoh Malaysia to meet Jason & Kane, 2 iconic Ipoh chefs. We love Malaysian food and eating with chefs and being able to eat whatever they recommend is a dream come true! As luck would have it, we met with two chefs in Ipoh, Malaysia to try lots of amazing Malaysian food. Local foodies told us that Jason & Kane were THE people we HAD to meet and that they're considered to be hubs of the local Ipoh food scene. They invited us to their hawker stall at Kopitiam Soon Wah and blew us away with several dishes. Their assam laksa, prawn mee & nonya curry are out of this world!
They then invited us out on a day trip where we would eat at two of their favourite establishments (besides their own of course) and a quick exploration of Kellie's Castle. Come along for the ride and meet Jason and Kane. If you're new here be sure to hit that subscribe button, it helps us out tremendously.
Where we ate in Ipoh:

Kedai Kopi Tai Kong - Amazing breakfast at local coffee shop goo.gl/maps/KwhQ1KAS1FAMzPje9
Restoran Makanan Laut Yau Kee - Jason & Kane looked long and hard for the best seafood in the Ipoh Perak area, and they found it here! goo.gl/maps/6eLg9Uaaww2QMFBQ8

That Hong Kong style bun is called Po lo bun or Pineapple bun (due to the crusted top that resembles the outside of pineapple). It is best served hot with cold butter stuffed in the center. That fried vegetable is called jicama or sweet turnip which is a root vegetable that looks a bit like a yam on the exterior. Those stuffed vegetables dish is called yong tau foo.

Most Malaysians are reticent about correcting others; but I got to say this for one of my favourite dishes. So the Assam Laksa’s sourness, it comes from Assam, the Malay word for Tamarind, and Lime juice I be would describe Assam Laksa as a South East Asian Bouillabaisse, which has more complex taste from the dozen of ingredients and herbs than the French soup or the Italian Chioppino Origins are unknown, but reputed to be from the Peranakans ( another Malay word for the Chinese who adopted local culture of the region ) from coastal regions of Malaysia, but you have similar dishes from Indonesia and Thailand
@PureDetour
@PureDetour Жыл бұрын
Assam Laksa certainly has a complexity of flavour not found in cioppino or bouillabaisse (both of which I also love.) But the layers of flavour in Assam Laksa make it really stand out for me. I love the way many asian cuisines balance the sour, sweet, spicy and savoury. Truly a magnificent dish and Jason and Kane's version is absolutely sublime

I used to think prawn noodle is better than assam laksa. Now I realised assam laksa is better than prawn noodle. Assam laksa is a blend and combination of sweet, sour, salty, spicy, fishiness, crunchiness of onions, fish, fish paste, pineapple, mint, tamarind and all others ingredients all in one . The flavours just burst out with every mouthful of the noodles. No wonder the late Anthony Bourdain rated it so highly and CNN rated it 7th most delicious food in the world.
