Genuinely surprised to see no mention of any 300ci / 4.9L i6 powered Ford Trucks so far. Those were known to run forever with little maintenance. There are many stories of how they just wouldn't die when they put in the engine killer solution back during Cash For Clunkers. Every other vehicle would die after a couple minutes of idle, and be towed out the the salvage lot, but all the 300 i6's would go back there under their own power.

We are currently on our 4th Ranger. They’ve proven to be durable pickups with the exception of the 3.0 V6. Our current Ranger is a 11 XLT super cab 4X4 with the 4.0L V6. Before adding the K&N intake and the FlowMaster exhaust as well as a free flow exhaust manifold, I was getting 19 mpg on the freeway with the cruise set on 75mph. Now with the mods I’m consistently getting 23mpg. We get 5-6 feet of snow every winter and our Ranger has never gotten stuck. It’s now 12 years old but has only 35K miles on it. I change the oil every 4K miles with Kirkland full synthetic motor oil and I change the front and rear differential, transfer case and transmission fluids every 30K miles. I guess this is why we get 250+K miles from all of our vehicles. If I didn’t need the hp and torque then I would have opted for the 2.3L 4cyl naturally aspirated engine. Those 2.3L can get 500K miles easily. Not only does our Ranger haul a yard of gravel, dirt and fire wood, but after the intake and exhaust mod’s, it now hauls ass too. 😁

@@2DogsVlogs I’ve never owned or ever heard of a diesel engine in a Ranger. The most durable engine in the Ranger was the 2.3L naturally aspirated gasoline engine. We’ve own 2 of them with the 2.3L. The first one we put over 500K miles on it and the second one we put almost 700K miles on it. Back then we changed the oil every 3K miles with conventional Valvoline motor oil. We now change our oil every 6 months (which is only about 1,500 miles) with Valvoline full synthetic (high mileage) oil, even though our Ranger has only 36K original miles. We change the oil on our Subaru’s every 5K miles with Valvoline full synthetic (high mileage) oil. My wife’s Outback has less than 30K miles and my Forester just hit 13K miles. How many transmissions have you gone through? It is rare for a Chevy transmission to last more than 150,000 miles. Dodge Dakota was a piece of junk. One was lucky to get 100,000 miles out of them without a major repair. Few of those lasted past 175,000 miles before being junked. The one that was equal to it was an old 1 ton international with a 401 v8. I have never had anything more tough or that could take as much abuse as those trucks. Could not agree with you more - Ive got a dakota with the 4.7 in it and even after moving up several tire sizes it lost NONE of its power or throttle response. Crank shaft and cam shaft sensors were replaced and the truck is insanely reliable. Its 4x4 prowess is insane - I know I can depend on it at ANY given time. I have jumped hills and it lands like it was built for it - 75mph on Klevar 265s 75 15s on dirt roads no issue - 35 mph offroad easy - will not get you stuck in mud or sand unless its you who did it. I loved that truck so much I bought a dodge durango - same generation with the 4.7 except this ones AWD and this impresses the heck out of me. Gave it a 2 inch life, 275 75 18s, 2 chamber muffler exhaust - also insane prowess in mud and rough terrain. Tons of room in it for taking the family literally anywhere at any given time. This also starts up every time, I should upgrade sensors while Im thinking about it - only weak spot is ball joints but I have spares. At no point do I ever feel worried Im going to be stranded, or cant go somewhere because of weather. The transfer case output shafts must be made of tungsten or something - because you literally cant put enough force on the system to break it. Rock freaking solid. Ive owned rams, fords and chevies - I wont buy chevys anymore because of the transmissions but my trucks both have 200k on them and transmissions are shifting like they should even after everything I put them through. I had a 78 F250 Ranger and a 08 Ford Rager. My Ranger was a 4 cylinder and I loved it. Except for the Auto transmission which I had rebuilt two times in less than 150k mi. I've also regulary overloaded and over towed with it several times. The manual version is much more reliable and if my transmission goes out again, I'm tossing a clutch in that thing. I paid $19k for it brand new and abused the hell out of it for over 10 years and I never plan on getting rid of it. Also, it currently blue books for $7k and regularly gets 25 mpg.

So far my 03 4l60e is holding up at 200k same with my 4l80e in my k2500 suburban my #1 complaint with the newer trucks is the lack of available manual transmissions which I guess makes me an oddball but I logged more than 400k on my 95 GMC when it suddenly developed a taste for venison and that was it's undoing.

You’re lucky with your 4l60e, my 05 had a little over 100k on it and decided to take a shit while I was headed home. Lost 3rd & 4th. Now the 80e was way more reliable and that’s why people would switch them out if they could. Never been a fan of Dodge. But in 2009, a friend of mine had to go on his missionary trip. I gave him the payoff on his truck and I could not believe how awesome that 5.7 Ram drove. My friends in the neighborhood are all Ford and Chevy guys and by the time I moved away from that neighborhood 2/3 of them were driving ram trucks. They ride great with the air suspension and I have a 2014 that I bought new with 115,000 miles on it that still has the original brakes and a haul an 18 foot trailer full of 4 wheelers up and down the East Coast at A high rate of speed. I own Chevrolets, Fords, and Dodges But my 10-year-old truck ain’t going nowhere. $78,000 to buy the same truck I have which I bought for $42,000. Not gonna happen.

Love my 94 Nissan D21 4x4 VG30. Bought it new for $16K. Runs like new with 500k miles. Did trani and clutch at 200k and 400k when making a wining sound. 4 speed so brakes last for ever. Speedometer quit at 430k about 10 yrs ago so not sure of mileage. My F350 4x4 2003 bought new for 36k. Have spent a few $ on engine head gaskets at 150k. Over 300k now and 6.0 diesel runs awesome. Original engine and trani been good. No problems there. My 72 F250 ranger XLT Camper special only has a little over 140k . I pulled the 390 and rebuilt it hoping for more power. Guess it was fine no change after rebuild in 1990. Still a good truck.

I had a good friend who was a mechanic at a Chevrolet dealership for many years. The dealership closed when the owner retired and sold the building. My friend opened an independent auto repair shop. This was at the time that S-10's were quite popular. However, it seemed that he worked on an EXTRAORDINARY number of S-10 pickups and Blazers. I once asked him if this was due to the number of them on the road, or because they were just junk. He paused briefly before giving the kind response, "Well, I don't think they made 'em as good as they could have." That seemed to explain why, of all the vehicles of all makes he worked on daily, roughly one third were S-10's: They weren't made as good as they could have been.

The GM Transmissions you mention are really good the problem was ignorant people towing with overdrive on! That destroyed them and lack of maintenance! I had a 2004 Silverado LT get 220k on the original, but I serviced it every 45k and I towed in tow mode only! That is the trick with not just those, but all transmissions. Also never have a vehicle still in motion when switching gears unless stuck in the mud!

Be glad your engine has held up so many fail in those years due to AFM well known widespread problem. I do like the body and interiors of those more than my 2003 though. A 2014 with an old LS based engine like my 2003 would be awesome.@@Kylewraps

The Hilux is challenged by the Mitsubishi L200 also known as the Strada or Triton depending in region. This one is proving itself to be one hell of an off roader. There's also the Isuzu D-Max and the international Ford Ranger, a version of which is sold in the US with a gas engine. But international Ford Ranger has turbo diesels. There's also the Nissan Navarre. Along with the VW Amarok, you have a very successful genre of small pickups that are powered by turbodiesels but one that's absent in the US market. Toyota's line up of pickups doesn't end there with the Hilux. In Asia and Japan, you have the HiAce and Lite Ace cab over pickups. In some regions you have the 79 series Land Cruiser, kind of like the Land Cruiser idea of the Jeep Gladiator.

Some of your data is a little bit off. The mid 2000's Mitsubishi Raider was the cousin to the Dakota. Not the Mighty Max. Those were rebadged as the compact D50 pickup. And the Rangers were never built or designed by Mazda. It was the opposite. Those 90's and up B series trucks were rebadged Ford Rangers. Mazda did build the Courier for Ford.

He's right about hot shots and especially car haulers preferring Cummins. I've worn out several pulling 3/4 cars on a trailer for 500k+ miles. I prefer the 6.7 but nothing wrong with a 5.9, either 12v or 24v. An Aisin transmission is stronger but the 68rfe is no slouch and shifts smoother and can be programed.

My 08 F150 with a 5.4 3v has 345k . Guess changing the oil like you're supposed helps.
@elithepitbulldog2209 Жыл бұрын
I have an 08 f150 pushing 300k. While these engines are susceptible to poor maintenance, if you use premium synthetic and change every 5000 miles, they can last well over 400k. I know of several fleet vehicles where the oil was changed religiously that have well over 400k. Carbon build up is what caused the problems. Super pro tip. Keep your foot out of it and keep clean oil in it, they are excellent engines.
