It has always boggled my mind how some South African Jews can actually move their whole family to Israel. I am an expat Canadian living in Cape Town for 22 years and met many Jews and Muslims over here, which opened my little French- Canadian view quite a lot. But WHY would you go live in another country that practice Apartheid after seeing how damaging the cruelty of such regime is on generations to come? I met such South African Jew and she was a very nice person. Perhaps it was the easiest place to immigrate for her family! but how f***ed up! 7:47 I would say, that these young people in the IDF probably are just regular young people. They have joined, or have been conscripted, into the IDF. Showing these young people, as relatable young people is not a lie or abusive or anything, these young people are who they are. What’s dystopian about it is the juxtaposition between those who say they are “defending Israel” and the people who they are supposedly Israel defending against. On the one hand we have under-equipped young people milling around entertaining themselves (because the fighting isn’t really being carried out by ground forces). On the other hand, in Gaza, there are hundreds of thousands of people who have lost everything (even their streets have been dug up) and who are eating grass and pet food. If Gazans are lucky they are living in a home with fifty people, or in a tent city refugee camp.

Ah yes, the only country safe for Jews is a super tiny one right by the middle east, which forces its civilians to participate in the military (that it's actively forcing into battles). A country whose continued existence (and therefore the safety of its inhabitants) depends on protection from *other* countries. ...It's definitely not the giant country providing the bulk of that protection...which has the highest population of Jews in the world, endless space available for the continued maintenance of insular communities, religious freedom, *and* optional military service... Even if you do choose to join the 🇺🇸 military for some reason? It's a way better equipped military, with way more non-combat positions available. (I'm not saying it's fun, but if I had to choose between joining the IDF or trying to join any branch of the American military...I'd choose 'Merica.) Even if a draft occurs and Americans start being forced to serve the military, our population is so huge that only a tiny portion of people can be selected by the draft, and you can still get out of an official draft easier than Israelis can get out of their standard military conscription. I mean, just being a woman is enough for me to avoid forced military service in America lol but not in Israel as far as I can tell...? Have any of you seen the old H3H3 video on how Ethan & Hila met (in an Israeli Holocaust Museum)? Hila talks about how she was living at that time, doing her forced service in the Israeli military. They worked her to the bone and yet she made so little money that all her free time was spent working another low paying job. She was absolutely miserable, for good reason...and I got tired just listening to her description! I have never heard of someone serving in the American military while having another normal civilian job, btw. I know the American military would also work me to the bone, but at least I would have to sign up for it with the knowledge, could leave basically at any time if I really wanted to, and would make enough money that I would get to quit working at restaurants. I am *so* glad I wasn't born in Israel. Obviously I'd still prefer being born to Jewish parents in Israel over being born in Palestine...but that's not high praise. I'd also prefer Israel over like...a volcano? or in space? Even Gaza is still technically more habitable than Mars right now.
