I don't think Bettman hates Canadian teams, I think he hates Canadian markets. I think a lot of folks miss something about the scale difference between the US and Canada. The city of Dallas, Texas, not even including its metropolitan area, has a population that by 2019 estimates is larger than the entire province of Manitoba. If the metropolitan area is thrown in the population would be behind only Ontario's and Quebec's. That's why Gary Bettman keeps trying to put teams in these large sunbelt cities in the US, if the game grows down there the potential to make money is enormous. If you put a team in Saskatoon you've got 300,000 people to work with. That's it. There's no room for growth there.

The rangers haven’t had a strong team for a long time and they should be one of the most popular teams in the unites states. Especially with this new Espn deal that has come, it could be huge if the rangers are at the top of their division

"And a Canadian team hasn't made it to the Stanley Cup Finals since 2011" This quote aged well. Howzat feel now?
@MoneyHoneyBunny2 жыл бұрын
It feels like they actively try to keep Canadian teams out of the finals now. Some of the calls in the Game 7 of Pittsburgh vs Ottawa made that the most rigged refereeing in NHL history. They wanted Crosby to get another cup BAD that year, they took 7 games vs Washington AND Ottawa and a boatload of horrible calls in both series to get him there. There's a lot of reasons why Crosby won't ever be 1 of the top 20 players ever but, that doesn't help his case. He's lucky to have joined the NHL after the lockout because from 96-97 to 03-04 scoring was almost impossible, 50 goals and over 100 points was like a miracle on those years. You had guys in the top 10 of scoring with UNDER 80 POINTS. Now you got guys with 100+ not even in the top 10 like in the 80s.

I wouldn't doubt that PED's are rampant throughout the league. It's so competitive that you just can't lose a step on others who take them. Imagine being a 4th line grinder and that being the difference to being in the league or not. The testing is also scheduled and not random so you would know when to stop taking them so it passes through your system. Schmidt had trace amounts so he likely just didnt allow enough time to pass before testing.

Back in my junior days ( early 90's ) there was always something floating around in the room, and the better stuff was usually in the stall 20mins before gametime. The rink staff was always instructed to leave any blood on the ice. ( Especially mine 😂) Exhibition games were horrendous due to guys foiling up or wearing HUGE rings. This is usually when my blood went on the ice, ( especially my first year at 15 ) even though I was not one of our staffed ' goons'. I found out that year that our goons sucked at being goons. Especially if the other guy was 6'5 and sporting a fistful of ' ceremonial rings '. Concussion protocol was having the trainer tell me not to fall asleep while he was patching my face up..😂😂 A few games I had to make my defense partner aware that when the puck was closer than 4 feet to my stick it would disappear from my sight. Local cops were usually around for the home games..lol . On the plus side...the beer and chix never stopped. Long bus rides were always funny and eventful. Even the odd parking lot brawl was fun. The early 90's was a very fun, but brutal time to play hockey.

Yet Atlanta gets blamed for being a bad market. Detroit, Chicago, Minnesota, Pittsburgh (my team), Washington, St. Louis, New Jersey all have gone through times with awful attendance. Yet it's always the poor Canadians who are shafted. Well, there is no more territorial draft for Toronto and Montreal to keep the best players in their regions. Not is there Sam Pollock to trade a second line player to the Oakland Seals for a high first round draft pick. Canadians skip that, just like they like to skip over the fact that Gordie Howe played with his son's in Houston first. It isn't Bettmans fault that American teams have done a better job at being champions.

I think the league also changed the draft rules and let Vegas be good their first few seasons so they could get that 32nd team. If Vegas didn’t do well, or their revenue wasn’t worth it, then Seattle and other possible cities would be hesitant to offer up the $650 million dollars.I know that Seattle started their season ticket drive in the middle of Vegas’ first season, but if the team was doing what every other expansion team had done before them, there would be a sense of hesitancy from fans and executives. Also the NHL wanted Vegas to do well because it was an untapped market. No other pro team called Vegas home so a lot of the residents had no real team to cheer for. Since the NHL was first, they will always have a special spot if the hearts of Vegas residents. In addition, the city is a tourist Mecca which drives up the revenue for team and city. People will travel to see their team play in Vegas because it’s in Vegas and there is almost every other form of entertainment.

Something I think should be mentioned in this video is the 2011 finals riots in Vancouver

Had no idea Peter McNabb was crazy like that. He's been on the Avalanche network, Altitude sports for forever now. He actually beat cancer this year and only missed 1 broadcast due to chemo. I hadn't heard his name, related to his playing days until the Av's game the other night. Was weird that I saw this video 2 days later and heard his name again.

Great video. The Ottawa Senators got screwed in the expansion draft. When Crosby got given to Pittsburgh by the NHL I knew that it was fixed. Bettman does hate Canada.

Demers often asked for stick measurements. I'll go with Demers on that one as well.

Hockey isn't immune to the crazy curve balls that life throws at us. Underneath the shine of its glory days, hockey has a rife history of scandals and scary moments. Some of this stuff is really out there and they almost sound like urban legends. I'd forgotten Travis Green was involved in that gambling scandal...hope he's keeping his nose clean these days. That Malarchuk injury makes me cringe every time. Thanks for posting...cool vid.

6:00 I beleive Sillinger beat the Record of Brent Ashton, by one team. I was only 11 back then but I had a subscription to the Hockey News and I remember the did a cover story on Ashton, when he broke the Record. The Photo had him holding a stick. On that stick, they somehow glued a puck for each team he had played for. It was a cool image! Cheers from Canada

Now that the 2023 playoffs have come and gone the coke accusions seems very accurate. The florida panthers are a huge example. Gudas after beating toronto. That picture of him screaming in wolls face has smth odd about it. Gudas is definitely on something.

I remember being at the gold medal game at the 2019 world juniors and Oliver wahlstrom’s stick breaking and the broken piece flying over the glass and hitting the guy a few rows down from me it ended up cutting his head (he was bald) his head was gushing blood and he had to be rushed out

I feel like part of Bettman's conspiracy to keep the Cup in America is to grow the game in the States. Being from and growing up in and around Vancouver I kept thinking (during the 2011 riot), "Thanks for justifying this." Sarcastically, of course.

18:20 the story goes that after game 6 the stick rack was left outside of the Montreal locker room which allowed the coaches to view mcsorelys stick and see that it was illegal and they kept it in their back pocket until they needed it

Fun fact: The Colorado Avalanche were almost named, The Rocky Mountain Xtreme. However, after being leaked in a Denver Post article, people hated it and the owner then chose Avalanche.

Changing the expansion draft rules so that the expansion team was more competitive from the start is a good idea, to me. I still remember the utter hopelessness of the first season for the Sharks and (modern) Sens in the early 90s. The Sens were almost historically bad.
