Without a connection with the characters, there is no story. I love a book or film where I can feel what the character feels.

Character drives story, unquestionably. When I hear "story first" it's like nails on a chalkboard, because as soon as that's said, it's right to "ok so what does X character need to do here?" so it quite literally comes back to character even with story as the purported focus.

Stories are important (to me) because in real life, the frequency of emotional, exciting moments is very low. In a well-written story, you can experience a lifetime's worth of those emotional, exciting moments. So in everyday life, you only get to eat a cookie once every couple years or so. In a movie, you get to eat 12 cookies inside 2 hours. Real life just isn't exciting or stimulating enough. Writing story is also a way of debating ideas with steel men. Most debates in real life aren't between steel men. People typically aren't good at arguing their perspective. When you write a story, you're allowed to step in for them and present their perspective in the strongest possible way. And that's when you get finally get to the core "why".

I love what she has to say - I've always loved grounded films and have focused exclusively on producing grounded stories because I've found these sorts of stories to make me feel the most.

i really wish that i'd had exposure to a creative lifestyle when i was younger. i was allowed to read pretty much anything i wanted, but i never had the feeling or the idea that i could go and write the kinds of books i'd been reading (especially because they were all male writers and i was a little girl reading only male main characters on their very male journeys haha). i'll admit i WAS kind of dense but i never grew up in a household that challenged me to think. the stories about her parents and especially the way she lights up talking about her mum is just so special. this is somebody who loves with her heart and i'm sure it's there in all her writing. gorgeous interview once again, thank you for sharing ❤
