I remember watching a kick boxing match once and one of the guys was an impressive kicker. Part way through the round though I heard his corner shouting "Thats your kicks done" and he pretty much boxed the rest of the round. I think they competed under a ruleset where you had to throw so many kicks per round. It was interesting that he preferred to box even though he was a very competent kicker.

@Andrew Onymous American kickboxing was originally called full contact karate. Before they added the high kick minimum, the fighters would mostly just blitz each each other with punches, and amateur boxers were beating all the karate guys who didn’t box. The high kick minimum rule was added for a couple of reasons: 1. to make the sport look different from boxing. 2. to ensure that the full contact karate fighters had to have some actual karate skills. 3. The fans were super disappointed at how little kicking there was and they felt like they were watching bad boxing matches. I don’t remember when they got rid of the high kick minimum. When I competed in American kickboxing in the early 2000’s it wasn’t a rule anymore.

Personally I found most of.boxing poorly transfers to muay thai, for power it's really good, but suuuper bad habits for muay thai. Even the 6 months of boxing I had combined with all my other martial arts helped me out tremendously. Not just the punching but also the head movement and all the slipping / weaving helped me not be hit as often in future muay thai / kickboxing style sparring. For the punches my favorite from boxing was the jab, then next would be a cross. Ramsey I agree with one of your other videos talking about combining martial arts (with sensei Seth I think), some boxing with my taekwondo foundation was awesome.

I just started ITF TDK two days ago. And I gotta tell you having that previous boxing foundation definitely helped me on the punch portion of those combinations. This is because I instinctively kept my hands up, chin tucked elbows pointed down, which made me snap my punches out more efficiently. The instructor even praised me on that. In my opinion, the most dangerous Kickboxer, Thai Boxer, or ITF TDK fighters are the ones with a solid, 3 year minimum foundation of Boxing. Cause you already know how to throw your hands, that’s half the battle right there

Interesting, here in the UK at my kickboxing gym there is an emphasis on having good boxing, there are some days we just focus on boxing and footwork. We have a sister gym that does both K1 and Muay Thai (we just train K1) and their fighters tend to be better at the clinch (ofc) and kicks. But we excel at kickboxing mostly because of our boxing emphasis and footwork to set up kicks and using angles and levels. And our dutch guard. So I see the way some gyms may ironically neglect boxing in the sport of kickboxing. Like I have even been told, not just my coaches but my team mates that I need to work on my boxing and footwork. As I tend to be more reliant on kicks and sweeps instinctually but getting more well rounded lately.

Generally MMA guys have categories they fall into based on their strengths. Some guys who come from kickboxing or Muay thai swear by the "sprawl and brawl" style. Some guys only train their boxing and wrestling only and do the bare minimum of kicking and jujitsu. You get strict grapplers as well who only train kicks or punches that can setup takedowns better And occasionally you get the "all rounder" type guys but generally after a while of fighting in MMA you start to realize what your strengths are and train them more often, its quite rare to see guys get very far nowadays as complete all rounders. Even UFC fighters who are pretty much elite in all levels pick a style and stick with it, only training the other aspects of the fight in order to get out of having to use them in the cage

If it’s the Dutch style right which is like what most American or western kickboxing is I think ?? But as fun as it is hiding your cake behind punches there’s just something fun about elbows and knees but not the clinch I hate the clinch the shit terrifies me

boxing is THE art just because hands are the most used weapon.... but it can't be trained by itself, you need to put other discipline but boxing is the most important to be strong in a complete martial way

@@RamseyDewey but it does protect you from eye gouges and the good old fashion Mongolian tongue stretcher. I was hit by a MTS in my mma debut and have since worn a full faced motorcycle helmet, as well as a steal bra to protect against the dreaded purple nurple during my bouts. I'm now looking into surgery to amputate both my legs to protect from heel hooks and knee bars. Ufc gold will be mine.

I don’t understand how some martial artists just train what they want but they don’t train every area of the game as they should. Doesn’t make sense to be an amazing kickboxer but can be easily out boxed because you barely know how to use your hands and basic fundamentals

It’s difficult to get good at different styles versus one. Even after all these years I just learned how to throw multiple combos in each stance, competently. And that doesn’t take into account if I can execute them well in sparring.
