Bombay (Mumbai) 1984 - Question #7 from Question and Answer Meeting #1
'If human consciousness is one, how is it that one person is happy and the other is unhappy?'
This channel is managed by the Krishnamurti Foundation Trust, UK, and by the Krishnamurti Foundation of America.
The role of the foundations was described by Krishnamurti when he said, 'The foundations will see to it that these teachings are kept whole, are not distorted, are not made corrupt. They will not give rise to any sectarian spirit in their activities... nor create any kind of place of worship around the teachings or the person.'
We maintain extensive archives of Krishnamurti's original works and all four Krishnamurti foundations are actively engaged in the publication of material in various forms.
Our videos contain thousands of subtitles in more than 25 languages, translated by volunteers from all over the world. If you would like to help us with translating subtitles, please contact us at digital@kfoundation.org

If all your memories were taken away, you would not be a vegetable. You would be pure awareness, as you were as an infant. You would have absolute clarity with your otherwise adult faculties. You would stand in complete awe and wonder at the universe around you as you are seeing it for the first time, openly, WITHOUT thought, WITHOUT words, concepts, or judgements. Just pure BEING.
@GameCrafter467
@GameCrafter467 2 жыл бұрын
There are different type of memories, one is stored in your brain, the other one is your body memory ( e.g your dna), one is your surrounding and culture memory,.. Why do you think infants have perfect clarity? Even with no brain memory what we see is not reality at all! e.g a tree is just a bunch of atoms but the infant brain sees an illusion of it which is not real and surely there is no clarity in what he sees ( because of dna memory and how his brain structure shaped )

@@GameCrafter467 Im probably not qualified to answer this question but babies for example have not yet adopted an identity yet so all there is is experience. there is no inside or outside just experience. A way to understand this is to observe a bodily sensation and ask how would that feel like if there was no memory of it (an example would be the sensation of you feet touching the ground or sensations on the palm of your hand). in other words for a baby There is no separation of the body and reality. if there is genetic memory, Its not the same as memory based in experiential time. Genetic memory would be similar to reflexes as it is the body's own intelligence.

Consciousness is One. But the content of our Consciousness is diverse. It is what we are 'conscious of' that makes us happy or sad. But not Consciousness as such.

But this sad and happy are only on emotional platform of this consciousness so they are not basically different. It is only when the mind empties itself of the consciousness,something completely new can happen. Otherwise everything seemingly new is modified continuity of the past.

He is right, My fears, doubt, anxiety's, worries, everything I feel I can't find a cure for, its all myself that is the problem, We are more then ourselves... or the illusion of one's self. It is hard to imagine but if all we are is memories of the past then how do we change? for the better that is. Do we throw away such memories? I do not know.... I would like to keep all that am I but improve on it and not throw away myself yet if it is myself that is the problem then where does one turn? our brains are a finicky thing... you can read all the self help books in the world but your self, the very core of your being is already formed! you can modify it, tweak it here and there, mask it, but it will always be there. so how I ask? how does one find what he is trying to teach us? It almost seems to impossible to try. Does one throw away human emotion? love joy hate fear all of it, and start fresh? great mediation? a will power to push beyond what we think is possible? so many questions... What is true happiness? what is absolute freedom and bliss? can there be any of this without first experienced pain and fear? what are we truly... we know we are of bone and flesh, of organs and blood, but what are we? these words truly stuck with me. the truth is we have no idea what we are, we are what our brains tell us, and yet our brain is an organ that holds memories. What are we? what is anything? energy... vibrations? beyond all things we have as a whole created an illusion of reality around ourselves that allows us to make it day to day, but that's all we are doing is making it. a new car... a new house... this and that, but in the end none of it means anything, fully... life, are we our dna? is all life just a complex reflection of dna? are me constructs of an intelligence far beyond our own within our selves? well im off too bed lol.

If the questioner don't compare 2 persons but rather why one in different time, responds to different circumstances, s/he would understand K's teachings more. Choiceless awareness (no thoughts but humanity's wisdom+love) in spontaneous action will free us to Pathless Land where only Joy, love and beauty exist. Happiness is a feeling responds to fear/desire generated from thoughts. With egoless, choiceless relation in movement we will then walk with giants, they will be our relation. Freedom land can only be reached by breaking this illusion of self-centered distinctions instantaneously.

A man changes his attitude towards happiness and sorrow in due course of his life. That doesn't mean he has changed his consciousness . It is only acting according to consciousness which knows only the absolute but not the relatives. Consciousness will not shiver in a cold weather it is the body and the mind that react to external stimuli . Shutting of the brain is not shutting of the consciousness . Consciousness is not simply a function of brain. Consciousness emanates from the universal commonality. Awakenness of brain and consciousness are different . Shared identity with everything in the manifest and unmanifest existence is consciousness. Some people are conscious of their consciousness . Others are conscious of their brain reactions either physical or psychological. Carrying a book is different from reading a book. And reading it as just a series words is different from reading it with a logical meaning. Reading in between lines will give a much deeper essence where words disappear as independent factors. Consciousness is the ultimate tool to understand self and beyond.

The thing is: all know (or better: assume) this by now. But very very few really know it. Really feel it. Many comment videos of jiddu "mind is illusion" and so on but... From experience I know that they just quote. They just believe. Assume. The only relevant question for me is: how can we truly feel/know that we are the ever unmoved lying beyond the mind/body senses. And there is where jiddu doesn't seems to deliver. He himself sadly stated before death that unfortunately almost nobody got his message.

Is a homeless person who just found $10,000 "happier" than a millionaire who just lost $100,000 in the stock market...? Perhaps. But how long will that "happiness" last! True and lasting "happiness" can never be achieved through external means, it's a state of mind, reached by following our hearts and gut-feelings more than our ego's. First then most people will find themselves in a state of mind that is a peace, contentment, serenity, etc that can last a lifetime. So right off the bat, "happiness" is a relative andsomewhat misleading term.
@mattd8725
@mattd8725 7 жыл бұрын
The answer to the question is really so simple that you don't need any complex spiritual guidance. If a person has enough to cover their basic needs it removes a large block to them being happy. So the homeless person with the proper attitude can become happier from a modest sum of money while a rich man with the proper attitude will be just as happy if they lose a large part of their money instantly.

Consciousness is not merely the content of though. As my arm is not me, MY though is not me. I can't be what is MINE. The self is the entity which observes without any judgement. Though comes later and add judgement to what is perceived by the self. Then, a question arises: What happens with the self after death ? All though products are dead, but not the self. Self is not invented by though. There's a pure state of consciousness independently from memories and thought.

Human consciousness is not one or else we would see what other people are seeing. Only our physical bodies are made from the same material, meaning, we are all from the same source. But if life inherently cared about cooperation all the time then we would be doing it. Our own consciousness just needs to learn when one should cooperate and when it should compete. Right now we often decide that based on external conditioning, even if that harms our own interests. The goal is to go back to your own interests and decide yourself when you should cooperate and when to compete. If everybody did that we would probably stop fighting each other over less important things and started cooperating about what affects us all. Meaning, we would reset our priorities back to be in harmony with our own nature and not some social brainwashing that often ust benefits the top of society.

All these questions and answers boils down to karma, which determines your current life style, whether you will be a happy or unhappy person.it doesn't matter whether you are born in a rich family or not,example I have a friend in my hometown (Africa) fortunately he was born into a very RICH and prominent family, when this boy grew up or graduated, everything he does ends up in prison, several occasions disgraced his Fathers reputation,his Father became very upset and wonder why even some poor family children's are looking good and happy with the little that they have, whiles you of all people that have everything yet they didn't get happiness in the family and he was not the only one, Frustration and Depression killed the man at last

Good question, resistance is the major human condition, if you get the idea that you are not the body, another person will resist this idea, sometimes fervently, if an idea takes convincing is it realistic? Resistance seems to be the human condition, maybe self inquiry is another form of resistance, resistance to the death of the body

Krishnamurti could never formulate a distinction between the brain and the mind. He also created a theory that the "me" divides itself into a second me to explain some things, and often says that there's no higher self. While many others philosophers admit that you are not what you have, you are not your body, you're not your achievements, not even your anxiety, anger, fear... They say that we are pure awareness, the self is the inner entity which observes everything without the judgment of the mind. The mind is the brain in activity. The self is non physical, the the self is well beyond all that, the self cannot be hurt or achieved, just perceived. The self is that same awareness you had when you were 10, 20, 40, 50, 70 years old and never changes, despite all experiences of the ego. The self is not the ego. The ego is part of the mind, which act and suffers all human condition. The ego is conditioned, not the self. Consciousness is not related to the mind, is pure awareness. Each one of us are points of awareness on the fabric of a universal consciousness.

Self is separative. Each self believes in and picks out different content based on its past experiences out of the same one human consciousness to run its life in the best possible way for itself. Even though the same content is available to all but the content is dualistic and contradictory in nature. It has built in false/truth, right/wrong and good bad values hidden inside. So that is that… no more explanation!

I believe that K was a man generations ahead of his time and a genius really. I have 4 questions which I wish someone had asked K. If anybody knows of any video or audio of him addressing them please share. Thanks in advance! ON DESIRE: K used to say something along the lines that desire is created by thought, and is destructive, brings insecurity, which brings division, which leads to violence and all the rest of it. Nonetheless, didn’t he himself “desire” that the people listening to his lectures understood what he was trying to communicate to them? Of course he did! Did he desire to change mankind and stop human suffering? Of course he did! Thus, he desired! He desired to change the world! ON DIVISION: K used to say that ANY type of division was “bad” (i.e. nationality, family, religion, etc.), but he himself often DIVIDED time between “psychological time” and “physical time”. Thus, his argument was often supported by division! The same applied to desire when he talked about desire for physical security being separate and distinct from desire for psychological security. He divided them! ON THOUGHT: K used to say (something like) thought was always playing tricks on human beings, and could never lead to right action, and only led to sorrow and all the rest of it. Nonetheless, during his many talks with Dr. David Bohm, they both were systematically “thinking” about how to best coin a sentence. That was thought in action! Their words were a product of thought! They even mentioned having looked the meaning of world in the dictionary. ON SECURITY: K stated that if one reached psychological security than physical security would be “all right”, because true psychological security would always lead to right action. He even said that if his house burned down, he would not care. Come on now! I would care (and guess I will always care) if my house burns down!

+Ron Carvalho I don't know any videos of K answering your questions but I will try to answer them with my knowledge. Before proceeding any further let me tell you that we are "limited by language" which means that language "cannot" express feelings, emotions, knowledge etc. One should already know a feeling before he understands what another writer/speaker wants to say. For example, if you never had anxiety, you can never understand what anxiety means if someone writes/says the word. You may have an idea about it from explanation but you cannot truly understand it or experience it from reading without you yourself experiencing it. Similarly what I write will be like directions or can help you but can never truly make you understand. You yourself has to go the distance or think in right direction. On Desire: K may have used the word desire but a better word to express what he wanted to say by desire is word "craving". People feel that we do every action with desire or craving and feel that actions cannot be done without desire. But we can do actions without having craving. He didn't desire/crave that people listen to him. He wouldn't have suffered if no one understood him or even listened to him. He was just doing what he feels is right. On Division: Actually, if you observe "deeply" anything we would see that no two things are same and "white and black"division as a concept is flawed. Even though physical security and psychological security are different they are connected in the sense that some psychological fears of security have real physical security implications and in reality there is no concrete division between them. He just divided them to probably explain someone something related to how many spend most of their time i psychological fear even if there is no physical/real danger happening or chance of that happening is very miniscule. That is what words do as we cannot have exact word for every possible explanation we have to adjust with limited words. On Thought: You have to understand there are two kinds of thinking. One is semi-automatic thinking like a tape recorder going on in our head and we are dragged by it and also give life to it by showing interest in it. To understand this, try not thinking for 10 minutes. It's almost impossible without practice of meditation. That kind of thought will not lead to right action and leads to suffering. Thought as an active process is good and will help in solving problems. On Security: When he said even if his house burned down he would not care doesn't mean he wouldn't stop it if he had power to stop. It only means that he will not suffer if his house burned down when he couldn't do anything to stop it. Any sane person shouldn't care if his house burns down but many people suffer a lot if their house burns down even if they couldn't do anything to stop it. Don't take anyone's words literally at least in philosophy because words may sometimes give wrong impressions. Hope this helps you. P.S. : I cannot reply further if you have any doubts. Sorry in Advance.

On division: listen to his talk with Dr. Allan Anderson (I believe one of the first episodes). The difference is between distinction and division. Language automatically distinguishes one from another, but the confusion lies in the belief that the words are the thing and thus that there is true division.

On desire: there is an interview on YT featuring Alan Watts and Laura Huxley. In it, Laura explains she wrote a book on self-improvement techniques. K was angry with her. Aldous - her husband - commented "but don't you do the same, helping people?", to which he replied, "yes, but I don't do it on purpose." He attended, saw and acted. The seeing is the doing. No thought required. No desire here.

On thought: K never opposed the idea that knowledge has a function. Again, to speak is an act of knowledge. You need words - i.e. knowledge - to communicate. The fundamental error is to mistake the language for the actual thing being described, which it never is. Language deals with concepts, while life is just that, alive; moving.

We struggle to innerstand the real history of man. Because the persuit of such knowledge is banned. Google glass hardwired to the human glands, used to take two to dance. Now it's just artifical intelligence.

You are conditioned whether you're born around criminals or born around the super rich. It doesn't take much to really think about. I know poor people who are very happy. I' be of rich people who are suicidal.

Rar jungle, in the words of James brown " your just talking loud and sayin nothin ". If your mind is not open to change then you won't change and that's fine. You could, if you wanted, summarise what your saying to make it more concise.

"You are nothing but memories", Krishnamurti says. Now that is false. If that were so, all investigation, all inquiry would be absolutely pointless. The fact that we can look at some issue afresh, can look into it deeply proves otherwise. In other words, we are some form of intelligence too; we have creative capacity - which may be operative, to some degree, even when there are traces of egoism. Perhaps what Krishnamurti means is that only in the absence of the "me" is there that creative capacity. So, for example, when a great painter is in the process of painting a masterpiece, he must forget himself entirely in that moment; only then is true originality possible. Insights, innovations, originality - these are possible only in the absence of the "me". Fair enough. But why not turn it into a positive statement and simply include the creative capacity and intelligence as among the features of being truly human? Am I ONLY the past, memories, conditioning? I don't see how that's necessarily true. It could just as easily be said that egotistic identity is nothing more than an exceedingly limited portrait, or caricature, of oneself. As the baby grows it assumes this false identity. The child grows, acquires knowledge, and the attachments multiply - attachment to ideas, beliefs, experiences, and so on. But it doesn't follow that I am ONLY these things. For one thing, it would be reasonable to say that the consciousness of the baby was not yet burdened with them.

You seem to have missed it. All so called inquiry and investigation are indeed pointless unless they break free of past theories and dogmas. This is true even in fields like science when new breakthroughs happen. And what K means by new is freedom from the past/thought. The past/memories are limiting even in the phenomenal world.

"If all your memories are taken away, what are you? You'd be a vegetable." Oh, I'm not sure; that's just an assumption. It's perfectly possible for some form of intelligence to be operating without the accumulation of memories. On the one hand, Krishnamurti seems to suggest that there's some form of intelligence, supreme intelligence, which has nothing to do with thought or memory, while here he says that without memories you'd be a vegetable. I think that where Krishnamurti and I diverge is that, for him, that supreme intelligence IS WHEN I AM NOT. But, for me, I don't see how memories, the past, conditioning are ANY THE MORE a part of me than supreme intelligence is. It may be said that I (along with just about everyone else) received a bad education, which focuses on objective knowledge; we accumulated many wrong or misguided beliefs about what we are. As we grow older, our identifications and attachments become more entrenched; our consciousness becomes narrower and narrower through all these identifications. I just don't see how it follows that I am only memories and identifications. For example, in deep sleep, when there are no memories or images, the life force is still operating. Who is to say that I am not the life force as well? If not, why not? If one merely identifies with thoughts and memories, it's that individual's lack of intelligence that has allowed for such an identification.

some one who sleep in deep didn't even can't clinch what he had been through he only can feel" what a sleep i had", because if he had that much intellect then he should know what he have been through. If one had step up from these thought so called me or obstacles on road to know who am i then he obviously know next time whenever he passed by same situation because he had full knowledge of me. So in conclusion without knowing the knowl!dege of me any body can make assumtion, reality is vast difference i think mr k have got conclusion And he pointed that where these thoughts have com! from🤔
