Trevor's idea is actually pretty fantastic. To Christiana's point, what people are tired of is politics, not solving issues that improve their and the wider human experience. My main concern with it actually is implementation. Who'll develop the system? The app? The issues to be voted on? Will their political leanings seep in somehow? What influence will the wealthy and community leaders have in shaping people's votes? Otherwise, a fantastic concept in theory.
9 күн бұрын
And what does "they have to" mean? Like, everyone voted scientists research one thing, but they know it's a dead end or another area is a better fit. Who makes them do it? Do they have to make their idea one of the things that are voted on? How many votes before there's a consensus, and when does anything actually get done in that system? Do you force people to implement the will of the people and how and who does that?

I understand Christiana saying that folks would get tired of direct democratic engagement, but I do think it would be entirely different if we knew that our actions actually mattered. And that direct change was/is possible in a more reasonable timeframe. I get exhausted reading through platforms and news and lobbying paperwork knowing that I'm getting screwed over no matter what I do by the self interest of politicians and their rich buddies. You can call it apathy but it's actually prolonged helplessness and fear and constant energy expenditure to survive what I know is an exploitative economic system and ancillary political structure. I wouldn't be tempted to peace out if I knew my votes had a direct and tangible effect. So Trevor, start building this app LMAO because you have my vote.

There's a series on YT on Aristotle's writings on political systems, including democracy and oligarchy. He wasn't enthusiastic about democracy (listen to it if you want to know why) and oligarchy. There's a whole episode on oligarchy, how they crumble, and what opponents can do to maximise the chances that the outcome is positive, rather than worse than before which is likely if the opponents force the end of the oligarchy. The ways that he recommends sound a lot like your participation model.

If I ruled the world: I would implement an immigrant buddy system, where Citizens would be paired up with an immigrant for the first year of their residency in their chosen land. The pairing would involve showing hospitality to the newcomer - introducing them to local services and amenities, perhaps sharing favorite community places/activities. This would be implemented in a similar fashion to Jury duty and thus, would only be assigned once every 7 years by lottery. I believe a program such a this would foster friendships and weave a better integration of the national fabric.

I think the amount someone stresses out about politics when they "are" plugged-in is much different from someone else who is just following a prophet who tells them what to vote. Trevor's idea evens out the playing field and forces everyone to be plugged-in "some" amount so that no one has to be plugged-in a lot but also no one gets to be :plugged-in" not enough. I honestly like it. I think if we raise the general level that people are "plugged-in", the overall quality of life will improve to the point that staying "plugged-in" will not be exhausting for people eventually, we just have to get there.

What Trevor is talking about is Democratic Confederalism (besides the AI stuff), a political system where governance operates through decentralized, grassroots structures. Power is distributed from the bottom up, with local communes and councils making decisions collectively. The system emphasizes pluralism, gender equality, ecological sustainability, and ethnic inclusivity, ensuring that all voices are represented in the decision-making process. Economically, it prioritizes a cooperative model, where resources and industries are managed collectively by the community to reduce inequality and ensure that basic needs are met, while private property exists on a small scale.

Trevor: I think you can achieve something similar by… 1) ensuring all the representatives pass the prerequisite qualifications and experience requirements before they can get through the first round of applying for the job, like any other job! 2) pay politicians the same as public servants, which need to be based on the legal minimal wage and have specific salary brackets (including a maximum) based on the person’s qualifications, experience on the job and the size of their portfolio 3) mandate politicians adherence to the same code of conduct rules that public servants must abide by, which includes declaring any actual and potential conflicts of interest (which may disqualify you from the job at any stage) 4) get rid of the gerrymandering rules, no private funding of election campaigns 5) maximum term limits If politicians are treated the same as public servants, like teachers and police officers, then they would be more representative of their constituents 6) more conservative limits on the campaign period, amount of funds one can spend campaigning, good sportsmanship rules that disallows negative campaigning and misinformation I think these are all very achievable and should be demanded by all citizens of all countries, personally.
