I hope to get more updates from you and listen to whatever topic you have off the top of your head to try to make the card game community a better place for both buyers and sellers.

A video about selling on EBay would be pretty cool. I’ve ramped up tcg player recently and have been on the verge of attempting Direct after reconditioning my cards more strictly. I’ll have to reevaluate and see if eBay is right for me. Thanks for the videos and your point of view - you’ve been helpful in my journey from occasional seller to where I’m at now.

@dominicmetzger32465 ай бұрын
@@mj23it1 If you factor in weekly events there isn’t a lot of need to open boxes imo. You just need more customers. Let’s do some quick numbers 117 Play box at wholesale cost 15% transaction charge on tcg players after fees and other seller costs 30 mins per box of opening, sorting and listing (let’s say $6 charge) You’re looking at needing an average EV of $190 (which is super high on standard sets) to achieve a 25% margin (which is still fairly low) If you simply sold the box at $155 in store you get the same with no time spent Even better, you sell as packs at $5.5 each and make $196.

Totally right about the at home sellers and price depression. Another thing to is it has caused bigger stores to adjust. The Gaming Co literally controls the price of a lot of lower end cards now and is pricing 10% under market with thousands of copies and is consistently repricing to low. I’m definitely going to try to transition over to eBay also

Idk why at home "hobby" sellers (myself included) try to get the newest sets and flush them as fast as possible. They likely don't have distro connections so they're paying near retail and dumping inventory so the margin has got to be razor thin or negative. Order boxes that are a couple sets behind that are slightly discounted and have stable card prices.

These are generally people that have very little financial prospects in their lives. They spend their few hundred bucks on new product and just sell it out. Sometimes for a few dollar gain. Usually at a loss after fees are factored in. Then they feel like they are “participating in commerce”, and call themselves a store.

this is what ive been telling people for about a year and a half now direct just isnt what it once was and is constantly getting worse and its even worse for me as a primarily yugioh focused business between a flooding of sellers dumping everything they can on direct and the horrible ri change of which ive had 20 ris come back and out of those 20 i sent 17 back and they got accepted its just to inconsistent grading (which is the reason the 2 percent change is dogshit) wise and a race to the bottom for me to care anymore.

Yeah i sell cards as my primary source of income , and there is NO WAY i could surivive if i didnt have my own ways , this market is WAY too competitive and has too many hobby sellers who dont need to get market value bc its not a job to them. In my paint business for instance my main competitors are other actual businesses, but with cards there is 20,000 little 8 year old timmys selling their collections for lowest ls8ted price every day , there are ways to do it , but you have to think outside the box for sure , no way your going to sell the exact same way as every other seller and expect worthwhile results.

Looking at your information is interesting. It is coming from someone that has managed to build a sustainable business in a niche that is pretty tough where the barrier to entry is essentially none existent thus the competition is always undercutting each other which is totally unsustainable for them but there is a new sucker born every day... To build a sustainable business in such a niche market is pretty difficult and anyone interested in really making it in this market would do well to listen to your advise and experience. Now somethings I think you might be looking at in a slightly different way than others because of your current size. The 800 pound gorilla will asses a situation differently than the tiny mouse. I have seen several small time and mid sized sellers say the same thing which is a little different from what you are saying and that is to get past the level 1 selling situation by initially selling a the bottom of the market to get the volume of sales up as fast as you can so you can quickly progress to the higher tiers and price less aggressively once you have build that base. I am not sure what is the right way but a seller with next to no sales trying to sell at a medium price point is not likely to sell a whole lot certainly not in a short time. So the argument of beginning with a dump of not super expensive but very much in demand cards under cost price to get the reputation thing sorted does seem like a valid strategy.
