I remember being hauled into the Bishop’s office (at 12) for failing to pay my tithe. (My mother was excommunicated so I attended alone- which blows me away now as an adult.) But I had pointed out that my understanding that tithe was anonymous, so how did he know? And two where did it say I had to tithe TO the church? I had read that I only had to tithe 10% to those less fortunate. So I took my measly babysitting money and with my grandfather every Sunday we invited a homeless person to breakfast so they could eat and be treated like a human being, even if only for a meal. God knew I paid my tithe. I said where did the church open up and say openly THIS is where the money went. But when I was 12, the temple in San Diego opened. And I realized that our tithe went to a temple of opulence. And I was HORRIFIED. The Bishop could not give me an answer. But I knew I had been lied to.

@@davidmikina9619 I left at 14, but for a bigger reason. I was scolded for talking to another church member whom I noticed everyone ignored. When I was scolded again I told everyone in my YW/YM group why (when I was late) and we ALL walked out. Our ward didn’t have any teenagers for awhile.

John mentioned the investments in the Ensign Peak fund would double in 7 years. That would happen if the church it getting on average a 10% return. You use the rule of 72 to determine how long it will take for your investment to double. Divide the interest rate into 72. This gives you the number of years it take for the funds to double. Even if the rate of return is around 7% it would take 10 years for the investments to double. Wow! If the Church does not put another dime into the Ensign Peak funds in 7-10 years they will have 300 Billion dollars they are saving for a rainy day! Glad I'm not giving them any more of my hard earned money! They don't need it. Great podcast/interview by the way!!

Wonderful podcast. It is possible to have members leave the church and still figure it out and stay close as a family. My father left the church and as he even said at the time he was the highest level of church authority to ever leave the church and probably still is. My last name would still be quite recognizable across the south. My father was highly influential and it was a traumatic crisis in our family. There were a few difficult years. Some of my brothers are still active but we have managed to work it all out and stay very close. It is possible.

I didn't learn about the connection between Mormonism and Freemasonry until 2017. I am 43. I've been a member my entire life. I was shocked. Joseph Smith organized a masonic lodge of 1500 LDS men in Nauvoo. Why is this not taught in church history classes at church owned schools? This is a pretty major part of LDS church history.

John, I can't get the tragic story of that family in Utah (murder/suicide) out of my head. I have SO many questions. How does this happen in a small, tight-knit, religious community where everybody knows everybody's business? Who knew what and did nothing? I just heard a report that Dad had previously been investigated for child abuse. Nothing came of it, and given the details, maybe there wasn't enough for police to charge him with criminally; BUT, I doubt it was an isolated incident. I've been out of the church for decades (40 years!), but listening to your podcasts, it seems little has changed. I guess my biggest question is: Was the family (in particular, the wife) told to keep police out of it and let the church sort it out via their own religious interventions/counsel? Or, more to the point: is it plausible that families are being told to leave the secular world out of their business and let the church 'handle it'?

I joined the church before the Internet and KZbin, etc... always JS was talked and shown with the plates....no mention of a rock ( the same one that failed to show him treasures, from what I've seen on KZbin) and a hat!! Now, they do mention it as well, he did it both ways and acting like it was always known....known maybe to a selected few, who didn't mention it to new investigators, members!?

I've been watching Mormon Stories Podcast for awhile now. I am seeing this episode about a year after it originally aired. Very interesting to hear what John really thinks about the Mormon church. Listening to this is giving me a better perspective on what my own church was really all about. To put it nicely, my kids and I were treated very differently by the people of our church after I ended up having to divorce my ex-husband because he had become physically abusive. He was from a highly "favored" family in the church. Their main message was that it could not have been his fault that he broke my jaw. This was a very devastating message for my kids and also for me. The church people were merciless. They hurt us. We were not officially excommunicated but clearly no one wanted us around anymore and we did not want to be around that type of heartlessness. It was shocking for me to discover exactly how shallow these people and their so called faith actually were. I am very wary of any "organized" religion therefore. I have not given up my faith but churches are now religions, or only represent a shell of uprightness for me. 20 years later I took my now adult daughter to visit her dad's mom, her Grandma. These people never got it. Her Grandma actually said she wished she had fought for custody and raised my kids herself. The point they never realized is no one from my ex-husbands family would have been granted custody by the state we lived in because of the horrible affidavits they wrote about how I was as a mom. They were so blind, they were and are still not aware that the state child protective services would not ever award any of them custody and they would never be eligible to become foster parents either because of what they wrote! They are still not aware that what they consider to be correct child rearing is not in any way acceptable. They revealed their own bias by their own written word. I fought for and won, didn't feel like a win at the time, sole physical and sole legal custody because of what they wrote. The entire process was devastating to me and my kids.

I find the whole notion of missions quite conflicting. On the one hand, I think proselytizing by religion is wrong since it's basically trying to form a relationship with someone with an ulterior motive. But at the same time, getting to experience another culture, learning a new language, and getting out of your comfort zone is amazing. It's unfortunate there's not much emphasis on the value of this in the U.S., like there is in other countries. In New Zealand, it's a rite of passage to spend a few years working and traveling abroad, almost in the same way that young Mormon men do missions. Yet many Americans see travel or working holidays as self-indulgent and a complete waste of time. So as much as I really don't like missions, I don't know if I'd want to take that experience from people, either.

It is a good question ... and historically there has been no real functional answer. The church has never had any framing for a valid way that someone can be a non-member (or an ex-member). There is just no template for that in the mormon mind. The brethren should think about creating one.

Yes, and that they don't undo your Temple work for you (and your family).. I get that it's probably not really necessary.... But, it bothers me as I spent alot of tithing money and costs to get to the temple and lining up friends to help....so, I'd never leave volunteer to undo something that at a time meant enough to me to do it.. besides, Jesus doesn't undo a blessing! I could understand that you lose your current temple recommend status....but, temple work done years ago should not be undone..

I was born into being Russian Orthodox, When my best friend was gay in high scholl I went to the father and asked back in the 90's why God couldn't love him and was told it wasnt a sin, only to act on it, which he had. That where my crises began. I also knew there are many parts of the world that dont know Jesus so couldnt believe they would not be allowed in heaven. This exclusion from temple rituals isn’t done even in many strict evangelical southern churches. They want people coming IN since that’s the way to get potential new members. I have evangelical family members and can attend a service, a Christmas program, a wedding, supper, or whatever. Out of respect, I don’t participate in their rituals however. These churches know that exclusion is the exact OPPOSITE of how to win converts.

From a converts point of view many of us already realize that most of it isn't true but it's larger history - kinderhook plates, massacres that type of thing requires research and can still shock. I still went back at a later stage after finding all of that out. I never tithed but I did give my time and sometimes my gifts or small amounts of money given directly. Obviously LGBTQ issues and race issues were disturbing to me and realising that some vulnerable people were being manipulated for tithing etc. I think people who have grown up in the church have a whole different set of issues which it's easy for many converts like myself to sweep away and not understand because we haven't been brainwashed as children. We are never looking with the same eyes. We are somewhat removed and just exploring another culture/community. I did family history work but no baptisms for dead ( ridiculous!) The 'prophet' was just a poetic way of saying leader and so on. Service missions are a great idea .

It is interesting to learn about the 2015 policy regarding LGBTQ people and their children. It is horrifying to me that such strong discrimination would be made as recently as 7-8 years ago. Why would living life as a homosexual be a worse offence than murder or abusing children, et al? For me, it is easy to explain when you consider what is the biggest goal of all dominant, organized religious organizations: To grow in numbers. More numbers equals more power and more money. It is the same base goal of any business. THIS (in my opinion) is also the explanation for the subjugation of women in all the major religions on the planet. If they can convince or force women to accept being breeders as their primary goal in life, then it equals larger numbers of members. Just like the Catholic church stance against abortion, even when the mother’s life is at risk. It makes sense when you realize their most primary goal is more members. In Québec before the “Tranquil Revolution”, couples weren’t allowed to use contraception. So 16-20 babies per woman. Even when the doctor said “no more babies or you will die”, the priests would come around and tell these couples they must continue to procreate. A death sentence. We see this same evilness when it comes to 10-11 year old girls being raped and forced to go through pregnancy and childbirth. Basically, female lives are not valued. Or, the only value they see in female worth is their ability to procreate. My question is when will women wake up to this and demand change? MLK Jr. was absolutely correct that power is never relinquished voluntarily.

Well don’t feel bad John! I’m 68 years old next month (sounds familiar?) but never knew about polyandry and the younger girls that Joseph Smith manipulated into marriage.. There was some years I was not active and actually lived the other side of mormonism but minus those it’s like 45 years of being actively involved.. CES letter led me to the Gospel topics essays and then the shock of what I learned left me feeling deceived and now I have zero trust in this church that hid this from its members

I would also add that it’s totally okay to disagree with viewing pornography for your own reasons. My partner and I do not do it because we personally view it as infidelity (and the thought of him getting off on another woman’s body makes me so sad, which I think is totally fair) along with some ethical and objectification concerns. But that’s the thing, those are logical and personal reasons, and a decision that we made together - not out of religious dogma and shame. And I think that’s the importance of open, honest education - people make decisions that truly feel best for them rather than just agreeing to it because they have to. I think when we withhold education in that way, people actually make worse decisions for them, like you said, because they’re not well informed.

You have it wrong John... the Bible says that God created us perfect (in his image) and Satan caused the Fall which made us dirty in Gods eyes, but He loves us so much that He gives us a simple out by sending Jesus who put mankinds sin upon himself and died for us so we can have everlasting life in Heaven with God (and Jesus). So He didnt create us as sinners we became sinners. Anyway.....love your channel!
