I was raised South Baptist. I have 4 generations of grandpas that are/were pastors. My husband and I have had a conviction and was pulled to the Catholic faith. The more research we do, the more everything is starting to make sense. We will be starting the RCIA soon! We are so excited for our journey into the Catholic community. I was raised Mormon, had a lot of doubts theology wise off and on. Became very devout, was in a Bishopric, temple worker, etc. Then I went through an uber Mormon phase where I did a deep dive on Mormon history and flirted with Mormon fundamentalism. This caused me to realize it isn't what it claims to be (restored ancient Christianity). I left and was a very convinced protestant for a number of years before reading myself into the Catholic Church (Latin Mass) about 15 years ago. Thank you ECF, Hilaire Belloc, and Bishop Sheen!

I am really looking forward to seeing part two! My husband and I became Catholic in our 50s, so after we had raised our children. Our son married a Mormon girl, and they have seven children. Our granddaughter, (their oldest) is going on a mission in about two weeks. She has had ups and downs with her faith but after a semester at BYU, she decided to go on a mission. She confided to me a couple of days ago that she was still struggling and actually wondering if God was real. She told me she had not said anything to anyone else about this. I passionately told her that I fully believe and know that God is real and also that Jesus is real. I told her many many people much smarter than I believe in God and Christ. It is so hard to know what to say. I have never tried to convert my grandchildren as I am quite certain their mother would restrict my presence in their lives. I couldn’t blame her as she is a 100% devout Mormon. My granddaughter told me what I said helped her. Of course I don’t want to help her into going on a mission, but I certainly want her to believe in God and Christ! Please pray for her.

Dear @Happycatholic389, seems to me you did just right! Staying in your granddaughter's life is more important than trying to fill her head with the Truth of the Catholic faith it seems to me. I did not always feel this way. I have made plenty of mistakes, trying to be the one who converts others, when God Himself is the One -- the only One -- Who grants the grace of conversion. The best we can do is to accompany those we love and be there when they are open to hearing our words. And what we who are farther away will do is to pray for you and your family!

@@Call_Upon_YAHI have to tell you the Catholic mass PRE DATES THE BIBLE. The apostolic fathers had the mass before the Gospels were even in existence. You have to know this. Early Catholic Bishops and priests in council with early Christian communities decided on the actual CANON OF the Bible. And we do NOT worship saints or Mary we venerate them- there is a difference

I've never been told as a Catholic "you shouldn't ask that question" by a priest, family member or any other fellow Catholic. That was one of many things that helped me stay Catholic in a time of doubt when I wasn't well educated on the faith yet. Catholics never seemed afraid of questions and in-fact encouraged them. Any doubts in my youth, and there were plenty, were always met with positive praise.

Yes but intellectual sins exist. Curiosity for it’s own sake, especially with matters against faith and morals, is a sin even if it’s just learning about it. Similarly, spending your time trying to understand complex theology when you haven’t read the catechism or don’t have a daily prayer routine could be a sin.

True curiosity for it's own sake, devoid of motives and objective reasoning is something only the mind of perhaps a toddler might achieve and therefor not a sin. If curiosity is tied to motivations that deliberately go against faith and morals then it would by definition not be for "it's own sake" and therefor sinful. Learning how to cause harm with a malintent is of course as sin. Learning how harm is caused to avoid it or to protect those in harms way is not a sin. The second part gets back to intent and motive. People are lead to God in different ways. Many atheists and protestants start with higher form theology long before getting near the catechism or developing a daily prayer or scripture routine. This is not sinful. However, if someone is learning how to defeat a high level theological argument without the desire to grow closer to God, or to will the good of the other, then yes this is probably sinful behavior.

The kindness shown towards Mormons in this comment section is unlike anything I've ever seen before on a religious podcast. Matt definitely has one of the best audiences. I can also say that among the makers and viewers of Mormon youtube channels there is a strong positive sentiment toward the Catholic faith (and Matt Fradd in particular). Many of the younger, dedicated LDS (myself included) are seeking content relevant to a more orthodox version of their religion, and channels like these certainly inspire them to pursue truth in a good philosophical manner.

@@benabaxter I think there is a difference in believing that some of the doctrines of the faith are an abomination v. the faith as a whole (including the believers). Mormonism does not posit that the entire faith is an abomination, but rather the creeds and some doctrine as ratified by early councils. I would say that every religion or denomination thinks that the teachings of others are abominable, or else we would not have the differences. Other organizations may just use softer language in describing the difference. I'm sorry if you ever felt hated or like an abomination from my religion. You are not, nor are the rest of the faithful Christians out there. If our desire to understand and work with other faiths seems two-faced, then I'll take that smear any day and still work with you so long as neither of us succumb to the captivity of secular leftist evil.

My aunt and her kids are Mormon. My aunt specifically converted from Catholicism to Mormonism through her husband. They are wonderful people and have even encouraged me to visit the temple in my town. I've been wanting to understand their religion better in order to dialogue with them, so I'm greatly appreciative of this interview. I continue to pray for their conversion to Catholicism.

My best friend growing up was Mormon. We always respected and slightly understood each other’s faiths because in the South there weren’t many of us (Mormons and Catholics) and each of our faiths compared to the southern baptists or mega church Protestants around us were “strict” comparatively. She recently has left the Mormon faith and is in her “agnostic” period- I’m praying one day she opens up to Catholicism. ❤

As a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I have always appreciated Matt's respectful approach and sincere approach when discussing the faith of non-Catholic christians. I was LDS for years . . . served in the Bishopric, on the Stake High Council, etc. Studying the history of the LDS Faith, outside of the whitewashed, sunday school version, opened my eyes. My wife and I left the Church in 2008 and started attending a local Protestant Church. We began studying the history of Christianity and made our way through Orthodoxy and into the Catholic Church. We could not be happier.

I had a lot of close Mormon friends growing up. I was always so jealous of their tight knit families, all of their activities- they truly set a great example for the family unit. I went as far as to have the discussions with the missionaries. After one discussion I knew it wasn’t for me. But they’re truly some of the kindest people I know.

I was born and raised a faithful practicing LDS member, then softly fell away in college to be a 'spiritual not religious' and later I found the Catholic church in 2014 and was so excited for my baptism Easter Vigil 2015. It was when my new life in Christ began. Selfishly, I am going to bookmark this episode to share, because sometimes I never get to express my Catholic faith because the person I am with is so interested in finally getting their 'Mormon questions' answered. Sometimes I will say "I grew up in a different denomination" so I can skip the inquisition. So THANK YOU Stephen, and I will be using your words to save mine 😂 This didn't get touched on until the Q+A section, but I absolutely cannot overstate the necessity of presenting and sharing early Church History. The entire LDS faith system rides on the Great Apostasy, and the years between the Apostles and Joseph Smith are relegated to 1-2 sentences in Sunday School lessons. *This* is a GREAT place for interesting, engaged, and edifying conversation! Lastly, I just want to note what an impact your military service had. My husband is a medic in the Army and (by the grace and good humor of God) I work for the Archdiocese for the Military Services as a Missionary Discipleship Trainer (hilarious as I am the only child of 7 who did not serve an LDS mission). Jesus draws many hearts to Him from those who are serving their nation. And lastly for real - if there are any Mormons reading this, especially those in the military, who want to talk about the spiritual movements they are working through - I would love to listen and pray together.

I spent 27 years as a member of the LDS Church. I served in Bishoprics, Stake High Councils and many other leadership callings, and additioinally served as a primary teacher, scout leader and more. This show and others with similar content, played a role in me venturing out of the "mormon bubble" and its peculiar view of Christianity and investigating the rich and sound traditions found in the Catholic Church (the church of my birth and upbringing). This investigation led to a very strong desire to be in communion with the Catholic church and receive the Holy Eucharist. I am back home now and loving this familiar story and praying for those who have a suspician that something is not quite right with the truth claims of the LDS faith. Peace be with you all.

That is saying that the gates of hell wouldn't prevail against the rock who is Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 10:4), not the Church. This has shown to have been the case because 1 Peter 3:19 tells of Christ going in and teaching to spirits in prison that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit. (1 Peter 4:6) and that preaching is still happening today because every knee will bow and confess Jesus is Lord (Philippians 2:10-11) on judgment day. The gates of hell did not prevail because Jesus Christ broke through the bands of death and hell and his gospel went into hell like a rock smashing through a gate. The gates of hell are *gates* not a person or entity and those *gates* did not prevail against Christ. Even if I were to entertain the idea of it talking of the Church then it still would hold true because the gates of hell didn't prevail against the Church because the Church came back. _"The one that was passed down by the apostles, and where we can trace back every Bishop of Rome (pope) to Peter."_ Your line of succession is false and has no legitimacy. Peter wasn’t a bishop, he was an apostle and leader of the church during this time. There is no evidence of Peter being the bishop in church in Rome. In fact, Iranaeus says “The blessed apostles, then, *having founded and built up the Church, committed into the hands of Linus the office of the episcopate.”* (Against Heresies 3 chapter 3) Or after the apostles set up the Church area, the first Bishop was Linus, not Peter. So where do you get that Peter was the Bishop of Rome? Where does it say that Linus or even the Bishop of Rome was supposed to secede Peter as leader? Linus was bishop of Rome from 67 AD until his death in 76 AD and John the apostle is said to have died between 89 - 120 AD, why would the leadership not have fallen to one of Jesus’s apostles? Andrew and Thomas are said to have been alive as well during that time. Also, Peter is also supposed to have founded the Church at Antioch and Corinth, so why does the Bishop of Rome get to be the leader when 2 other Churches have the same claim of authority? And the Church at Antioch was founded in 34 AD while Rome was founded in 42 AD so it doesn’t even have an seniority position which makes the claim of Rome even weaker. _"You will quickly find that Mormonism is a mish mash of different heresies"_ This is just an ambiguous statement. I could say the same thing about Catholics and if left at that you would be wondering "what do you mean". So I will be more specific and say that your blatant worship of Mary and the saints, your worship of another idol being the cross, the indulgences, calling your religious leaders "father" and you baptizing babies as heresies against God and Jesus Christ. And to put it bluntly, the gospel the Catholic Church teaches is a watered down version of what God's and Jesus Christ's true gospel really is. _"The Theology makes no sense"_ It makes perfect sense to anyone who actually knows it. Also, To say that the Church was built on Peter is to say that the Catholic Church is Peter’s Church and not Jesus Christs. Peter himself uses the same imagery in his first epistle saying the church is built of numerous small petros “living stones” (1 Peter 2:5) who, like Peter, confess that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, and those confessions of faith are the bedrock of the church. Which is also how the Early Church Fathers took Matthew 16:18 to mean. Origen said “And if we too have said like Peter, ‘Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God,’ not as if flesh and blood had revealed it unto us, but by the light from the Father in heaven having shone in our heart, we become a Peter, and to us there might be said by the Word, ‘Thou art Peter,’ etc. *For a rock is every disciple of Christ of whom those drank who drank of the spiritual rock which followed them,* and upon every such rock is built every word of the Church, and the polity in accordance with it; for in each of the perfect, who have the combination of words and deeds and thoughts which fill up the blessedness, is the church built by God. *But if you suppose that upon the one Peter only the whole church is built by God, what would you say about John the son of thunder or each one of the Apostles? Shall we otherwise dare to say, that against Peter in particular the gates of Hades shall not prevail, but that they shall prevail against the other Apostles and the perfect? What is Peter’s confession? ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ There’s the rock for you, there’s the foundation, there’s where the Church has been built, which the gates of the underworld cannot conquer”* (John Rotelle, Ed., The Works of Saint Augustine (New Rochelle: New City Press, 1993), Sermons, Vol. 6, Sermon 229P.1, p. 327). The current Catholic interpretation of Matthew 16:18 is not shared by the Early Church Fathers and is a later interpretation to try and justify the false Catholic claim of being true. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is God's and Jesus Christ one and only true church here on earth. The Catholics are just the first apostate Church to come about since Christ.

Hi! I’m the girl mentioned in the video by Andrew Morgan, that converted from catholicism to the lds church. First of all, I truly appreciate Stephen being open to talk to me. Btw, he is right, although I was born and raised catholic there’s a lot of problems with how I was catechised as a latin american/brazilian catholic (I assume it’s somewhat similar to his wife’s upbringing). I got baptized to the LDS church while living in the US for a year, and long story short I found myself in a very complicated situation once I went back to my country. I’m still working on it. But anyways, I just wanted to sincerely thank you guys and Andrew for being willing to help. It was a great interview! :)

Wow this was quite interesting. I felt like I was back in college in a philosophy/ religion class. I’ m a fallen away Irish(.75) American Catholic. My family through our history were very devoted as was I until my children were to make their confirmation and the bishop was arrested for molestation ! 😵‍💫At the time in the mid 1990s Catholic clergy were being called out every day. So I left the faith. I tried a few churches Methodist was the first then Baptist because my daughter went to PBAU. Liked both and enjoyed the ministers being considered almost on the same level as parishioners rather than worshiped like priests. Then we joined the United Methodist Church and realized that there were the same issues there. Closing their eyes to child abuse. At the same time we were having a family crisis. During which my faith in Christ became stronger. I was praying and exploring the meaning of it all and wondering why? Very sad but felt closer to Christ carrying this cross of trouble, being abandoned, lied to, vilified, mentally tortured telling the truth. In my head and heart I felt like I was being drawn back to the Catholic faith. I didn’t know whether it was melancholy because I was wishing for an earlier time when things were easier more peaceful or what. But it was intense. I started studying everything about Jesus’s early life , Mary Joseph, the gospel of John and Fatima and Lourdes. During a move I found a box of religious artifacts that my Nana gave me. A cross, a miraculous metal, a booklet about Our Lady of Fatima and a Rosary. I started praying the rosary at least once a day. And things started to change for the good, angels arrived to help my family it truly was a miracle. As Stephen said I was called God was giving me a clear message to go back to my origins. I watched/ listened this program as I cleaned. It didnt even seem like 3 hours it was so interesting. I want to watch in next episode now but it may be tomorrow. I feel an evolution coming in religion at least within my family and friends. As I look around more talk about religion , religious movies, Asbury Church miracle amazing grace from God. I loved this today and thank you for reaffirming my move back to my heritage and the Catholic church. Praise God. ❤️🙏❤️

Providing us a life they never had but didn’t prioritize our souls & hearts to Christ’s Church. Now as adults , we must decide to be Catholic or not . I was raised Mormon, then left the church and became Baptized Christian when I married a Christian, and we moved to California. I took the same route as Stephan except it’s was reversed. My wife encouraged me and would go to sacrament meeting with me, but she later told me after I converted that she would have never had children with me had I still been Mormon and was actively preventing that. She is a wonderful woman and prayed for me constantly, always encouraging me to look deeper at t the scriptures and never being afraid to challenge my beliefs no matter how upset I got that she just couldn’t see what I saw. . I was baptized a Christian 1 1/2 years into our marriage and the day before my 22nd birthday. praise the Lord! We now have three children, all baptized and being raised Christians and encouraged to know intimately the one true God.

Stephen is an embodiment of the St. Autustine quote: "The truth is like a lion; you don't have to defend it. Let it loose; it will defend itself." We are so lucky to have a member of the Catholic Church with deep insight and the ability to transfer it in such a logical and concise manner. His armour is faith and ratio. I don't agree with the burning part of the opposition literature because this kind of content challenges our faith, and through patient logical argumentation we can deconstruct every teaching of such sort (not me, but guys like Matt and Stephen for sure). I almost became Mormon. When I was a kid, Mum and I became good friends with a bunch of Mormon missionaries. Mum told them we weren't interested in converting but they were happy to just stay friends and hang out. Being a kid from a small Aussie town when the ninja turtles were exploding on the scene, I thought they were the coolest guys in the world, but they moved away and we eventually lost touch. Years later, not long after coming back to my Catholic faith, my grandma randomly showed up on my doorstep with a little book on Mormonism written by a Catholic priest. No joke, a few days later, 2 Mormon missionaries just so happened to move into the apartment next door to me. I was so new to my faith and the missionaries were so kind, and enthusiastic, and brought back some fond memories, that after a while I seriously considered joining the LDS Church. They went through all the sessions with me and asked if I felt the Holy Spirit moving., They invited me to a couple church services and even took me to their local president's house where I found myself poorly trying to defend the Real Presence and other doctrines. If it wasn't for that book I may have been convinced of their claims to be the true and restored Church. At one point of desperation, I prayed for an answer and flipped open the Bible randomly to Mt 15:13-14 "Every plant which my Heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up...Do not worry about them, they are blind leaders of the blind..." In the end, when it became clear that I wasn't going to convert, our discussion got heated and one of the missionaries ended up yelling at me and kept saying, 'Your Church is the Church of Satan!' 'By their fruits you shall no them!' and 'The LDS Church will only keep growing and one day you'll know the truth!' It's been many years and while I haven't been convinced to this day, I still think Mormons are kind and honourable people who could teach a lot of Catholics a thing or two.

I was Mormon during my college years - phased out when I got home from college (BYU) - and have drifted for the last 50 years. I do have strong faith in God and Jesus Christ but never found a "church" that drew me. This was a fascinating interview! Look up a historian named Don Bradly and his book, the lost 116 pages. Like this guest, Don left the LDS church after reading history, then came back after learning even more history and becoming the top world historian on Joseph Smith. He was convinced that JS was in it for the sex, but then learned after going deeper and questioning assumptions that no one had questioned, that JS was a sincere believer.

Mormons believe that you can still raise your children in heaven that passed away to soon and that you automatically go to heaven if you pass away before youre 8 years old because you don't really know the difference between right and wrong until then, i took that to heart and still hold a bit of belief for.

Inactive LDS here. I’m struggling with much of what Stephen described struggling with in this video. And through this struggle, I’ve felt my relationship with the Father grow much closer than when I was an active member. I’ve come to the conclusion that if I were to leave the LDS faith, it would be for either Catholicism or Eastern Orthodoxy. My biggest hurdle keeping me from making the leap is the trinity. I’ve spent quite a bit of time trying to make it make sense, and I just can’t. Any book recommendations or apologist videos would be greatly appreciated. God bless ✌🏼

I understand how complex and muddled the trinity can seem coming from an LDS perspective, which is very comprehendible and simple. I would be happy to speak with you about the doctrine and explain it in the terms which helped me to understand. As far as book recommendations go, I would suggest St. Augustines "On the Trinity." Frank Sheed also has a great and accessible book called "Theology and Sanity." Both would be great.
