Because in Latin, only made the /k/ sound, and was considered redundant and obsolete as a result (this can be seen today in the Latin-descended Romance languages, which rarely use , and instead prefer and ). However, over time, Latin and its daughter languages had the /k/ sound shift to a number of different sounds when it came before front vowels, principally /i/ or /e/. In Old French, it specifically became /t͡s/, and eventually /s/. Thereafter, Old French never had the /k/ sound appear before front vowels; Middle English, on the other hand, did. With the Norman conquest of England which occurred during this time period, many aspects of French language and spelling were brought over into Middle English. This is considered the defining event that separates Old and Middle English. As a result of this influence, many new spelling conventions were established with the priority of making English writing more readable to French speakers. One of these was to avoid using the letter before front vowels. Fortunately, there was another letter that could represent /k/, and (since it was essentially unused in French) could do so unambiguously when appearing before front vowels: the letter . , on the other hand, continued to make both the /k/ and /s/ sounds. I saw this come up in my notifications and went straight to watching this. Before it even started ideas popped into my head how it might go. I started with the end of the alphabet because it seems those letters would have the most eccentric personalities... Z - always falling asleep, can't keep his eyes open. Y - Indecisive, can never make up his mind. X - Loves pr0n! R - Dresses and talks like a pirate. W - Dresses like an investigative reporter: "Alright, I need to know the Who, What, Where, When, and Why!" Y - "Huh? How come you're singling me out?" W - "Not you Y, the word 'Why'. Also, there's no other vowels in that word but you." U - I'm not in the word 'Why'!" W - "I know, not talking about you, U! U - "Oh, I see!" O, I, and C - "What?" W - "Nothing guys! Just...Y, can you confirm you are a vowel? Y - "I don't know..." W - "What do you mean you don't know? 'Why', 'Try', 'Fly', you are the vowel in those words and others!" Also 11 is just so much fun. Who doesn't like 11?
