I think you’re all missing the point. I was in college in the 70s, so I grew up with this stuff. Who cares who was better? We had it all. Clapton, Zep, Floyd, Yes... Hell, we had Motown, folk, hard rock, metal, southern rock, singer/songwriters (Chapin, Cat Stevens) even disco and punk. Ten minute songs. Fifteen minute songs. Tull with a single song that was an entire LP (Thick as a Brick). The range of artists was astonishing. Nothing these days comes close to the eclectic styles we had back then. Such a pity.

There were no personal computers, no internet, no smart phones, no 'how to play blues guitar' CDs or DVDs. Eric and a few other guitarists (e.g. Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck) living in South London, would spend hours, days, weeks, months, years listening over an over again to blues records (expensively imported from the USA) working hard to absorb and emulate what they heard.

Who's better is a stupid argument. Jimi prayed at the alter of clapton like everyone else in 67, by 69 he burned Eric off the stage, but they were great friends. Go back and look at the post jimi interviews eric did. He straight said jimi was better. And didn't feel bad, because jimi was something else entirely. That's like asking what's better... the best food you ever tasted or the best drink you ever tasted. Well they're actually different. Jimi could do clapton. In time clapton could do jimi. They were both great and who gives a shit who was better? Stevie ray buried them both in the long run anyway so quit trying to pedestal these guys like it's the Olympics and enjoy.

Hendrix wanted to be this man. Santana bows to his superiority. His nickname in the 60s was God and also Slowhand. Without Eric Clapton 3 quarters of the music you react to would not exist simply from his influence on music. His band Cream is one of the earliest influences on heavy metal. He was the first outside recording artist to feature on a Beatles song as he played the lead guitar on While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Bow to this man's guitar greatness. Also, RIP to your dad. My dad, gone 5 years now, was the main influence of music in my life and Eric Clapton is something I proudly say my dad got me into.

Actually longer than that. Just the Yardbirds alone date to 64. As far as being the best? Well he is my all time favorite, and I've been listening to him since 1966. However, as great as he is, and he is spectacular. Jeff Beck is probably a more talented and musically astute guitarist. In the pure blues form, Peter Green is likely more skilled. In that genre and overall, Duane Allman would likely win out. Of today's players guys like John Bonamassa, Duke Robillard, Robin Ford, Walter Trout and others whose talents lay in the blues could hold their own with Eric. The big difference however is that they are all working off of and following what Eric started. And Eric himself took much from Robert Johnson, Freddie King, B.B King, Howlin Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters and other blues legends an dissected it added to it and made it distinctly his own. British Blues baby, pure, hardnosed, distinctive, full on electric blues and blues rock.

Dude, I am 63 and have been watching and listening to Clapton since the late 60's when he was with the Yardbirds and Cream. I have seen him live 4 times. Go back and watch some of his live concerts, I saw him bring the Atlanta show to their feet with just that guitar. He is a Living Legend, welcome to the fold. Watch the Crossroads concerts with him and BB King and Buddy Guy.

By the time Jimi Hendrix became known Clapton's (and the very 1st) supergroup, Cream, had already disbanded and Clapton was on to Blind Faith . . . and prior to Cream, which changed everything, Clapton had already established the electric guitar as the iconic instrument of Rock & Roll music in first The Yardbirds and then John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. No one has a catalog of exception music like Eric Clapton and no one, from way back at the beginning, has continued to make important, vital, and simply beautiful music like Eric Clapton. Actually he went from Blues to hard rock and metal and then back to the Blues. He had a Blues band when he was 16 which was called Skid Row (no, not the Sebastian Bach Hair Metal band) together with Phil Lynott. He was mentored by Peter Green back then, another great guitarist who doesn't get the attention he deserves. Hardly anybody knows that there was a Fleetwood Mac with Green before the one with Stevie Nicks. Hardly anybody knows that he wrote "Back Magic Woman" - a song Santana covered and based their success on. Gary even played his Les Paul on Still Got The Blues - and devoted a whole album to Peter Green cover versions: "Blues for Greeny"

By the way. I first heard Eric Clapton when I was approximately 14 years old. I am now a 57 year old woman, who loves her some rock, country and soul! Also like classical and opera, but not real fond of rap, except a few songs. Hated disco, but liked that 80's dance stuff, that got a little more risque, with the likes of Prince, and a few other's. But I usually go for the hard core metal, before anything. It all mostly depends on my mood.

There's a reason people were spraying "Clapton is god" all over the world when Clapton had his stint with John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers. He's an amazing guitarist and was inducted into the Rock'n'Roll HoF three times. With Cream, the Yardbirds and as a solo artist. I personally like his playing with Cream best because he was a little bit more raw in his playing, less polished. But he has created damn great music - one thing you maybe want to check out later is his performance at MTV unplugged, where he's playing his own songs (and a few Blues classics) unplugged i.e. acoustic versions. But: In order to really appreciate is you should be familiar with the original versions because the unplugged versions sometimes sound like a totally differeng song. Layla for instance. I think The Bluesbreakers are a great starting point for your journey deeper into the Clapton Rabbit hole. Cream would be great, too. BTW the Unplugged show features "Old Love" which is a collaboration between Clapton and another Blues great: Robert Cray. Oh, and make sure to check out Clapton's album with BB King, appropriately named Riding with the King

Love ya Preston! But no, no Carlo Santana. Eric Claption. His nickname back in the. 60's &'70's was " Slow Hand". When he first started out, he was told that he'd never make it. Because his fingering on the guitar was to slow.He played with a group called Blackbirds, and then Cream. Before branching out on his own. One of his iconic songs Cocaine. I've seen him live 3 times. Once in the late '70's in the '80's and the last time about 3-4 years ago. Incredible, technically and musical. He suffers horrible stage fright. So while his music it incomparable. He doesn't interact with the crowds much. But the music, man the music more than makes up for it.

You may of had goosebumps listening to this performance, I had a tear run down my cheek. What an emotive display of Eric's craft. He was on point that night, near top of his game. What a display of skill, talent and ability. Eric Clapton has given the world some truly amazing guitar work in his music and should be considered a world treasure. I can't imagine a world without his music and musical influence. I'm SO GLAD you enjoyed this, I just recommend listening to him from his beginnings, start with the Yardbirds, then the Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, Derek and the Dominos and so on. Enjoy !!!

Eric Clapton nicknamed Slow Hand one of the all time greatest guitar players of all time. BTW that was Steve Gadd on drums! Considered one of the great Jazz Fusion drummers of all time! That Keyboard solo was sick though totally blew me away what and awesome performance from everyone and what an awesome reaction Love your reaction and love your authentic love for music!!

I get you are useing the fact that their last names are King to refer to them as the 3 Kings. But I would counter that with a more accurate reference to the 3 Kings from the time and place being discussed. The 3 Kings ------ Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. Now there's a trio that would be hard to beat, all Yardbirds at various times. Colossal talent, incredible guitarists and a fine hand if you were playing poker!!!
